About the Author
Jonathan R.A. Maier earned his PhD and MS degrees in mechanical engineering from Clemson University, and an undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology. Dr. Maier has conducted research sponsored by the National Science Foundation, the Department of Defense, and both large and small companies.

Significant Advance

I am a designer who has followed, applied, and made small contributions in design theory for the past 30 years. Maier's theory on affordances is the probably the most significant advance to design theory that I've seen in that whole time. Moreover, this book does great job describing other theories and advances that have been introduced over my career. That review gives context to the new work and has given me new ideas about how the older work fits in. Finally, this work is very easy to read.
I have found that the theory provides me with a fantastic context for understanding designed artifacts and predicting how different people might use the artifacts. This lets me better identify ways to improve the systems I'm working on. I can already point to many striking findings I've uncovered using Maier's methods. They really work.
At this point, there are two things I wish the book would do. First is that I wish that the book (or perhaps Mayer's web site) would flatly define the word "affordance." The book has a whole chapter developing the idea and hints around the meaning. It introduces definitions from other authors. It just falls short of ever actually defining its own use of the word in concise way. Second, I wish that it didn't have to introduce a special word, like affordance, to describe the theory. While the word is a great word, using it puts up a barrier between initiated and uninitiated audiences. Further, because Maier has not crisply defined the word, this barrier can become a stumbling block. This, as a result, limits the applicability of the method.

A great resource for engineers and designers

This book provides a great overview of the affordance concept, and how to use it in the product development process. The book is complete, well-written and describes a pragmatic approach developed by Jonathan Maier. As a engineer and innovation professional, his experience shines as he provides several examples to highlight the theory behind affordance based design that most books on product development miss. It will be useful for those who also read the book The Design of Everyday Things from Don Norman (2002). Maier not only discusses the basic foundations of affordance, but introduces practical methods derived from the theoretical considerations. He also makes suggestions that are applicable to several other design domains, such as architecture, biology and systems in general. I recommend this book to anyone who aims to bring a concept to market successfully.

I strongly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in design methods. Dr.Maier is pioneer in Affordance Based Design (ABD) method. The author possesses sound knowledge on design methods. Affordance is an important aspect of design and ABD method clearly captures it in early stages of the design process. I believe that this book will make the reader understand the theoretical aspects of ABD along with well laid out practical examples. This book is very well written giving references to several existing design methods. I find the book as an inspiration for researchers. Worth the buy.
