5 stars +! Must have if you're in Performance Management as IT or Management Consultant

I'm PMP (Project Management Professional), active in Performance Management for the last 6 years. My IT knowledge is about the average, I'm very confident in design sophisticated Excel files to sort and analyze Performance data. This is a type of book I was looking for a while! Help me to understand the IT side of managing Performance Management data. It is not an IT book, this means even non IT educated readers, like myself, can highly benefit of it.

I strongly reccomend this book to a variety of professionals for different reasons:
* to not so experienced Managers and Project Managers: it gives a great overview of how is possible to integrate IT in business/projects in order to take fully advantage of using accurate data, benefit actionable information, be results oriented. Also it shows how is possible to succesfully manage design and implement a Performance Dashboard project, and use it to empower people, stay on target, understand the big picture. This is an excellent start to understand how to deal with IT projects, and how to smartly use IT in taking right time decisions.
* to experienced Managers and Project Managers: a superb view of how to communicate better with IT, speak same language and design results oriented applications. The author presents very well how is possible try to balance and to compromise (and hopefully succeed!) the IT need of planning, and clear specifications, and management desire to have the final product in place over the night. Strongly hope the managers will better understand this process and they will learn it is worth while spend some more time with planning and testing, instead of waisting 10 times more later, in desperate attempts to catch up with changes, running around the clock and making last time improvements.
* for IT professionals: it might be a back on earth lesson. In a lot of companies IT is a tool to reach business objectives and not the ultimate goal. The people wich are not so IT skilled might be good some other places, and is nice they are like this. If IT experts will spend some more time with them, they finally might understand how can use IT applications in their advantage.

I will keep it as a future refference when I'll be in the position to design performance measurement databases, customize reports, plan data analyzis, join teams with IT experts. Thank you Wayne, this really helped me!

Quo vadis?

For purposes of discussion, pretend that your organization is a vehicle within which you and your associates travel en route to a series of destinations; for example, various stages of progressively improved operational efficiency and progressively increased profitability. One key question arises: How well is your vehicle performing?

The three "dashboards" (i.e. operational, tactical, and strategic) that Wayne Eckerson offers in this volume can help to answer that question. "The monitoring application conveys critical information at a glance using timely and relevant data, usually with graphical elements; the analysis application lets users analyze and explore performance data across multiple dimensions and at different levels of detail to get at the root cause of problems and issues; the management application fosters communication among executives, managers, and staff and gives executives continuous feedback across a range of critical activities, enabling them to `steer' their organizations in the right direction."

The ultimate success of the cohesive, comprehensive, and cost-effective system which Eckerson discusses in this book depends on several factors: sufficient leadership and resources at all levels of implementation, correct and consistent application of the right metrics, a compelling graphical user interface, and contingency planning which ensures user adoption while driving the organizational changes.

I especially appreciate Eckerson's provision of three mini case studies that illustrate how -- in real-world situations - the three performance "dashboards" can achieve the desired objectives. Specifically, those that are operational (Quicken Loans, Inc., pages 127-141), those which are tactical (International Truck and Engine Corp., pages 143-158), and those which are strategic (Hewlett Packard Co., pages 159-177). I also appreciate the material provided in Part Three (Critical Success Factors: Tips from the Trenches) as Eckerson correlates various multilayered applications built on business intelligence and data integration infrastructure that enables any organization (regardless of size or nature) to measure, monitor, and manage business performance more effectively.

All executives recognize the importance of accurate and consistent measurement of what really matters. Obviously, the "what" varies (sometimes significantly) from one organization to another. In my opinion, the three performance "dashboards" that Eckerson recommends can be of substantial benefit, whatever the given "what" may be but if - and only if - the aforementioned success factors are present. To repeat, they are: sufficient leadership and resources at all levels of implementation, correct and consistent application of the right metrics, a compelling graphical user interface, and contingency planning which ensures user adoption while driving the organizational changes.

This book is by no means an "easy read" but it will generously reward those who absorb and digest its material with appropriate care. Then what? He fully understands how difficult it is to ensure adoption by others, and, to manage performance effectively throughout the given enterprise. In the final chapter, Eckerson notes that performance dashboards can easily backfire and cause performance to decline or stall instead of climb. He then identifies what he characterizes as eight cardinal sins " that can turn a performance dashboard into a performance quagmire." How to avoid them? Eckerson offers nine strategies to ensure adoption and eight strategies to manage performance.

I highly recommend this brilliant book as well as Dean Spitzer's Transforming Performance Measurement. Both are eminently worthy of thoughtful and rigorous consideration. However, that said, I also offer a caveat expressed by Peter Drucker in 1963: "There is surely nothing quite so useless as doing with great efficiency what should not be done at all." Invoking again the "vehicle" metaphor introduced in the first paragraph of this brief commentary, I presume to suggest that if you and your companions don't know where you are going, "any road will get you there."

How to use information to energize your goals and strategy.

Modern corporations collect vast amounts of data. Unfortunately, they too often mistake having massive amounts of data for having useful and actionable information. They are not the same thing. Even when a company knows how to transform data into usable information, there are still steps left to take that that information and make it accessible and usable throughout the organization in a manageable and coordinated way.

Wayne Eckerson explains how to use performance dashboards to display information on screens that help people do their job, understand where they are against the company's strategic objectives and goals, and give them the ability to drill down into the data as required by their job. These screens should be designed to be simple to read and understand (he says they should be designed with for a 12 year old), but empowering for their users.

There are three broad types of performance dashboards: Operational, Tactical, and Strategic. These must be handled differently, and I think the author does a great job in explaining how you should implement these. Each type gets a case study of a company that shows the reasons and methods for the implementation.

This book is for more for technical types, but it should also be looked at by the business types involved with driving and supporting such an initiative. I also appreciated Eckerson's emphasis on the a thaw between the usual tensions between the IT and Business teams.

A helpful and useful book.

Good book not a lot of color

It is a good book, the images are colorless which make the book seems a little boring, but at all it explain weel and give good examples.

Disappointed

I know this was a used book, but it was listed as "very good" condition. I was disappointed when I received it. The cover is badly worn. I expected color photos, but they are B/W and the image resolution is horrible -- like something that's been copied a million times. The page layout is off -- the text is literally TWO SPACES from being cut off of the page. Some of the pages are crooked Honestly, this doesn't even look like an original textbook, but rather as if original pages were photocopied and then bound together with something less than a professional binding machine. If this was done by a publisher, they should get out of the business!

Smoked the Net+ Exam using this and other materials

I've read Todd Lammle's books, followed some of his podcasts, blogs, twitter, the normal stalker stuff etc. and find this guy the most engaging networking professional around. His CCNA book is absolutely fantastic from the few chapters I have read so far(this will be step eventually for me after this cert perhaps for which I will pursue deeper into soon). This book is also in that category of awesomeness. I read all the material in this book along with doing the exercises and pillaging the CD along with it. The virtual lab is sooooo freaking awesome for doing networking diagnostics (which I use in my new real-world job).

I nearly topped out taking this Network+ exam with 860/900...something like that. I knew the questions I missed when it was all over with. Time left on test was like 1 hour lol.

Other stuff I used was test banks on the internet and researching questions I missed, Network+ by Cengage (an older edition), and some various network troubleshooting books I have ran across in my time studying for this test. Hope my review helps!

Passed my test on the first try, but this book has some issues

I bought this book to pass my Network+ test and I did, but the book seems like the writer got bored. Many of the written labs had many wrong answers and if it wasn't for knowing better I would've believed it all the way through. By chapter 18 you could tell the writer got bored with the content because chapters 18-20 became very broken. If you didn't know any better you would've taken what he said for face value.

Overall a good book and I did pass the test on the first pass, but would expect the writer to take his writing more serious and get it peer reviewed before publishing it. Multiple errors and if you just fed your brain with it's content without questioning it, you would probably take it as gospel. Personally I would expect more from a certified expert. If you can pick out the errors and update the errata, your fine, but you have to know when he is wrong vs. right.

An update is highly required on the book overall and the simlets side of the context, this book doesn't even mention those type of questions but luckily I had a CCNA book on hand to discuss subnetting because this book makes subnetting extremely difficult to comprehend.

The writer likes to ramble on and probably could have shaved off atleast 150 pages via just cutting to the chase. Yes I passed the test on the first try, but I had to utilize other resources to get to the content I needed. If you hadn't taken a test like this in the past, this book would be seriously lacking in what is truly needed to pass the test, but on the flip side, you do learn what you need to understand many of the test concepts. I'm very neutral on this book.

I haven't finished reading it yet but so far its a good book. For the "end of chapter" review questions the are multiple choice and short answer. I really like the short answer questions because it makes you think versus seeing the answer in a multiple choice format.

AVOID AT ALL COSTS

Worst professor ever.. so what are the odds that this is the worst textbook ever written? HIGH. Don't buy this. Please don't buy this. If it's mandatory for your class, you won't understand any information from this puzzle. Buy a different book. The content in this book is just re-worded in lengthy and confusing sentences so it's not plagiarized.

It is to molecular biologists what DNA is to cell.

I read this book at the library and was highly impressed with the mode of explaination and representation. The book is highly informative giving the explaination with the best lucid way and the figures too are at the right places. How so ever the book would have been still more better if the method given at many places would have been clubbed with the major draw backs and precautionary steps.
All in one it is a very useful book to be obtained by the biologists working on the field

Fantastic as a supplement

I was very excited to see a book for Portuguese in the "Dummies" series, and I was thrilled once I received it. Written in the usual comedic style of this series, "Portuguese for Dummies" is entertaining, very well-organized and has tons of useful information. You should know that this book concentrates only on Brazilian Portuguese.

However, I should say that you shouldn't expect to be able to teach yourself Portuguese solely from this book even though it's fantastic (and the author states this upfront). This book is a great companion to taking Portuguese classes or using another learning resource. Personally, I have been working with the Pimsleur method on CD (which is superb), and so I have a working knowledge of the langugage. This book is great for someone like me, since it can serve as a review, a fun supplement to my regular studies, and has lots of other wonderful features.

I was thrilled to see sections on common Brazilian idiomatic expressions and slang, something that's not contained in most instructional resources I've come across. I have Brazilian friends who constantly confused me with their expressions, so now I'm starting to get it! Also great are sections on terms associated with Brazilian culture, music, Carnaval, helpful things for travelers, tables with conjugations of common verbs, etc. You can tell a lot of thought went into creating this useful guide.

One major problem: the CD is off-the-charts bad. There's an English speaking narrator who introduces conversations and cannot pronounce any of the Portuguese words properly (WHY did they bother having her try?) The Portuguese speakers sound stilted and robotic when talking.

However, the book is fantastic... I strongly recommend that you buy it, then tear the CD off the back cover and play frisbee with your dog.

If you REALLY are serious about learning Portguese, I recommend the following materials, all available on amazon.com:

1. Pimsleur's Brazilian Portguese, Comprehensive CDs (or Cassettes), Levels 1-3.

2. A good Portuguese/English dictionary: I like the Oxford.

3. Portuguese for Dummies

4. Portuguese in 10 Minutes a Day (for vocabulary building).

It is pretty good the language is not as easy as it seems lot of similarity to Spanish except in pronunciation.

Too many mistakes

Learning a language in the informal and fun way proposed by the book is always good, but unfortunately this book has too many mistakes, mostly concerning pronunciation. For example, the letter X in Portuguese does not have only two sounds like they say, but four. The difference between "closed E" and "open E" is never pointed out, so that the letter E in words like "dedo" and "elefante" is said to have the sound of the English E in the word "egg", which is not true. There are also too many accents missing. The list of problems goes on and on. Concerning the CD, I'm totally amazed that the speakers, although from Brazil, still read all the mistakes contained in the book. In their life, they would never say "gostar o Brasil", but "gostar do Brasil". I'm Brazilian and a Portuguese intructor. There is hope for the book because the grammar is not bad, but it needs to be carefully reviewed and corrected.

What makes DNA different from hordes of competitors purporting to help readers understand genetics is that it is written by none other than James Watson, of Watson and Crick fame. He and his co-author Andrew Berry have produced a clear and easygoing history of genetics, from Mendel through genome sequencing. Watson offers readers a sense of immediacy, a behind-the scenes familiarity with some of the most exciting developments in modern science. He gleefully reports on the research juggernaut that led to current obsessions with genetic engineering and cloning. Aided by profuse illustrations and photos, Watson offers an enthusiastic account of how scientists figured out how DNA codes for the creation of proteins--the so-called "central dogma" of genetics. But as patents and corporations enter the picture, Watson reveals his concern about the incursions of business into the hallowed halls of science.

After 1975, DNA was no longer solely the concern of academics trying to understand the molecular underpinnings of life. The molecule moved beyond the cloisters of white-coated scientists into a very different world populated largely by men in silk ties and sharp suits.

In later chapters, Watson aims barbs at those who are concerned by genetic tinkering, calling them "alarmists" who don't understand how the experiments work. It is in these arguments that Watson may lose favor with those whose notions of science were born after Silent Spring. When he and his English colleague, Francis Crick, discovered the double helix structure of the DNA molecule in 1953, little could they imagine that a mere 50 years later scientists would be putting the finishing touches on a map of the human genome. In this magisterial work, Watson, who won the Nobel Prize with Crick for their discovery, guides readers through the startling and rapid advances in genetic technology and what these advances will mean for our lives. Watson covers all aspects of the genome, from the layout of four simple bases on the DNA molecule through their complex construction into genes, then to the mechanisms whereby proteins produced by genes create our uniquely human characteristics-as well as the genetic mutations that can cause illnesses or inherited diseases like Duchenne muscular dystrophy and Huntington's disease. Watson may have mellowed a little over the years since he displayed his youthful brashness in The Double Helix, but he still isn't shy about taking on controversial subjects. He criticizes biotech corporations for patenting genes, making diagnostic medical procedures horribly expensive and damping further basic research. He notes that while China and other countries with large populations to feed have eagerly grasped the potential of genetically modified foodstuffs, America squandered $100 million on a recall of taco shells and the genetically modified corn used in them. He pleads passionately for the refinement and widespread use of prenatal genetic testing. Watson will probably provoke the most controversy with his criticism of scientists, corporations and government funding sources for their avoidance of important areas of research-notably the genetics of skin coloration-for political reasons. Watson Provides an Excellent Summary with his characteristic wit and sometimes polarizing approach

I assigned this book to the students of an honors class I recently taught at Lake Superior State University, entitled "DNA: The Secret of Life". Not only was the name of this course the same as the book, but I closely matched the order of topics presented in the class to those found in the book. Because there are only 13 short chapters, this allowed for reading assignments of approximately one chapter per week to fill out a 14 week semester. The book not only covers some of the early history that led to the discovery of DNA as the genetic material, but it also examines the complex issues brought about by having an increased knowledge of the hereditary molecule. In addition to reading the book, our class also watched several episodes of the companion PBS documentary of the same name, thus enhancing the reading experience.

I found Watson's writing style easily approachable and targeted to the advanced high school or college educated reader. The interjection of personal stories and encounters that Watson had with various researchers provided insights that only one of the discoverers of the structure of this molecule could provide. Watson has often been viewed as a polarizing figure, and his writing pulls no punches on certain topics such as the ethical nature of genetic testing, evolution of humans, the race to describe the human genome, and genetically modified organisms (GMOs). While making clear his own views on these topics, he provides enough information that the critical reader is left with a feeling that many of the dilemmas presented by the DNA molecule are complex and have no "right" answer.

At the heart of every cell lies a collection of molecules that hold the key to biology's incredible diversity: DNA. In his 2003 book "DNA: The Secret of Life" molecular biologist James D Watson gives the reader an in depth tour of genetics, it's history, where it stands today and where it's going tomorrow. In the early 1950s Watson, along with Francis Crick and Maurice Wilkins, codiscovered the hidden structure of DNA, for which they shared the 1962 Nobel Prize. That discovery is pretty well covered in "The Double Helix" so, if you've read that one, this book may be covering some familiar ground for you. But if you, like me, have not read TDH then DNA will serve as a good introduction to that era. Watson covers the early history of genetics starting in the early 19th century with Gregor Mendel and his work on heredity of the pea plants. The term "genetics" was coined about 1909 by a British biologist, William Bateson. But even before Mendel and Bateson people were thinking about heredity; theories like pangenesis and homunculus were popular for a time. Darwin proposed Natural Selection in 1859 but was troubled by not knowing a mechanism for his Theory of Evolution. Seven years later Mendel published his findings on pea plant heredity in an obscure Austrian/German journal but it took a long time before the two theories got together. The 20th century was a heady time for genetic research, competition between scientists reached an all time high as everyone searched for the correct molecular structure of DNA. Watson, having lived through those days, knew all those players in a professional, and sometimes personal, way. But when big business and the government got into the fray, things changed. With giant chemical companies investing millions into R&D, and expecting substantial profits in return, the days of free "exchange of knowledge" were over. Some scientists saw big business as an opportunity for unlimited research funding and for personal profit as well. Now the chemical companies, and some scientists, were seeking copyright patients on their discoveries so that anyone wishing to do additional research or even related research would have to pay-up first. Nowadays anything related to "genetics" is, for good or bad, in the public eye. Things like cloning, growth enhancement, GMO's in food and medicine are highly controversial for everyone; health care professionals, consumers, politicians and scientists as well. But no matter where you stand on these issues, you need to be well informed on the science involved and this book is a good starting point to that end. But there's more to genetics that the controversial issues mentioned above and Watson gives the reader an in depth look at the many different facets of this important science. Some of the topics covered are: the origin and evolution of life; medical research on human disease, genetic and otherwise; genetics in forensic law enforcement (like CSI); human evolution, how and when we came "out of Africa" and the Nature vs Nurture debate. Watson's writing is clear and informative, not to mention entertaining, and he gives a good overview of the history and workings of genetic research. You may not agree with everything the good professor has to say but after reading this book you'll have a clearer understanding of the issues. Filled with cutting edge science of the day DNA: The Secret of Life was scientifically up to date in 2003 but, like any science, a lot has changed since then. New findings and theories not withstanding this book is still as relevant and controversial as it was a decade ago. For the layperson reader DNA:SOL is a good jumping off place to newer publications and different authors in molecular biology and genetic research. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has a open, but skeptical, mind with some experience in reading science. I had no technical or formatting problems with this Kindle edition and, as far as I could tell, all the illustrations, charts and photos are included.

DNA The secret of Life

If you want to know something about the role of DNA in the 21st century, who could be a better source of information than the man, who discovered its structure and pioneered its technology. That man is James Watson, the author of "DNA The Secret of Life".

Watson and Crick beat Chemistry's superstar, Linius Pauling, in the race to decipher DNA's chemical structure in 1953. Since then, science has made amazing progress in broading and applying that knowledge. Watson tells that story in this book. He, himself, played very important roles in pushing the scientific envelope, including his leadership of the Human Genome Project.

In the last second, our bodies each produced millions of new cells. Watson explains how this process works, starting with the reading of the DNA code and the activities of messenger and transfer RNA in assembling a protein. We humans, were not content to merely understand this process. We audaciously put those tiny factories to work for us. We learned how to splice DNA at a point if our choosing. We learned how to insert a gene of our choosing into a bacteria's DNA. We put the cell's factories to work for us making medical products. If we only had a minute sample of DNA, we learned how to make millions of copies of it. In short, we created the biotechnology industry.

Watson tells how Amgen and Genentech raced to be first to produce human insulin by recombinant DNA processing. It was another race against time.

He tells about the Human Genome Project (HGP), which was perhaps more ambitious than putting a man on the moon. Consider that our DNA is billions of letters long. Enormous breakthrough were made in the chemical analysis techniques. The sequencing rate was made faster and faster by brilliant breakthroughs. The HGP, once thought to be impossible, was finished ahead of schedule.

DNA technology will replace many of today's medical techniques in the years ahead. It allows us to understand the enemy and to attack it in a precise manner. The cure of cancers and AIDS will come from DNA technology. Heart disease too. Watson explains the hows and whys of future medical advances.

Gene therapy is in its infancy. Imagine having all the cells in your body made more perfect.

Tracing human origins, finding the ancestral paths of living things, fingerprinting with DNA, forecasting the health of a human embryo, and other topics are also covered in this book.
