Who's been in my diary?

I had read a book that was describing how James Forrestal had died, and it sounded very suspicious to me. After doing a little research I had a strong feeling his death was not a suicide, but a homicide. When I found out about this book I was anxious to find any clues as to why he was disliked or who his enemies might have been. Unfortunately I later learned and in conjunction found out by reading this book that his diary was handed over to the White House and Dept. of Defense prior to release. The author also edits the diary to fit a "book format". The end result of this, is a bland, watered down view of Forrestal's thoughts and ideas. There is no indication of statements he made that were antagonistic to people or ideas, or that enemies were made from his policies. In fact, through the whole book he seems to have a friendly relationship with Pres. Truman and his administration. But out of nowhere the last few pages have Truman calling for his resignation and the media starting a campaign to smear his name. Throughout the book James Forrestal comes across as a very intelligent, concise, detailed individual who performed his duty with discipline and principle. For him to become suicidal and depressed in such a short period, is not believable to me. His life seemed eerily similar to one Vince Foster who was murdered in the Clinton Presidency.
There is more to this story than meets the eye. My gut feeling is Forrestal was going to expose some things in this government. In fact he was an anti-communist and is known to have been conversing with one Sen. McCarthy. He also had made some remarks in regard to government officials seemingly making policy that enhanced the communist cause. China being the perfect example. Sen. McCarthy was villified for trying to root out communism. But he was on the outside looking in. James Forrestal was on the inside and might have been in the process of exposing it to the outside. And if that was the case, it isn't hard to see why he had to be removed.

Why the Forrestal Diaries are Important

Lightly edited to capture the words set down by James Forrestal, our first SecDef. This gives an insightful look at what we in the USA were facing during those turbulent years. Whether it is the stench of human flesh burning and rotting on the sands of Iwo Jima the day after the invasion began, as Forrestal saw and smelt from a near-shore US Navy destroyer; the disorganized response to the demands of Josef Stalin (who know how to play his weak set of cards, and thereby grabbed nearly everything in Europe that he wanted to replenish the USSR losses); to the budget battles in Washington DC that Forrestal lost on his forced resignation, requested by President Truman on March 1, 1949, as President Truman did not want to hear any more about military budget needs from Forrestal. From our reading, it is obvious why the highly stressed Forrestal was worn out at that point in time. One can read between the lines about Forrestal's opinion of the political "chum" who replace him, Louis Johnson. Those who are savvy enough to know how this all worked out will remember SecDef Louis Johnson had only supplied summer uniforms to the US Army GIs who within a year had to deal with the ill-prepared war on the Korean Peninsula in the dead of winter.
This book is the best insight into the character and integrity of James Forrestal.

An Unsung Hero

A remarkable man who was placed in less than desirable circumstances by his "superiors" in government.
He knew the players, the circumstances, and where the skeletons were hidden and was not likely to "keep
quiet" when seeing poor decision making. He is an unsung hero and a man who had great personal honor.
The diary was scrubbed before being returned to the family. With the materials the author had, there is
an interesting saga demonstrated--true history. A book well worth reading.
