Good guide.

I purchased this book specifically for the CEM exam. The material covered is a good overview for the exam. However it does not cover all the topics you need to know (Codes and Standards, Alternative Financing, and some other stuff). The problems are not quite representative of the problems that are on the exam though. They are set up a bit differently and also cover some topics that the exam did not ask. If you practice these questions anyway (need the Solutions book too), you'll be more than qualified but may also be wasting your time on stuff you don't need to practice. However, a lot of the material from this book is incorporated into AEE's CEM course and is important for the exam.
Overall, you should definitely get this book for preparing for the exam, especially paired with the Energy Management Handbook by Turner and Doty. Besides the test, it's a great book to have anyway for reference if you are in the Energy Management field, easy to understand and well written.

Guide to Energy Management (math inconsistencies)

Although the book is fairly informative, I am having a really hard time following the math equations and concepts. There are several errors in various chapter "example calculations", therefore it becomes confusing if trying to use the examples to figure out the chapter review questions. Chapter 4 especially was not very good at explaining Present Worth when dealing with depreciation, and concepts concerning ROR or IRR. This is a good "overview" type book, but leaves a lot to be desired if you are really trying to understand concepts behind the information.

The sheer number of typos, grammatical errors, and omissions in this book are unacceptable and just plain annoying. The text is also in need of updating to coincide with the current state of affairs in the economy....just keep that in mind when reading that since '09, the game has changed a little bit.

Overall though, the text does a good job at giving you a general idea on the majority of the energy management topics. Would have given it four stars, but the errors are just too common.

Read this book! Very entertaining, informative, and relevant

This engaging account of the 1920's is an especially remarkable book given the year it was written: 1931. With remarkable detachment and prose which has stood up to the test of time, Frederick Lewis Allen wrote about the 1920's just after the decade had ended. Writing in a voice that is half that of a journalist and half that of a historian, Allen covers everything from presidents and presidential politics, to prohibition, the economy, sweeping social changes, the coming of mass media through radio, syndicated columnists, and increased attendance in movie houses; the red scare, the rise of business and science in popular esteem, religion, and a variety of other cultural and social events and trends. The modern era, it could be argued, began on Armistice Day, 11/11/1918.
The trends and issues of the post-World War I decade resound with amazing familiarity today, at the dawn of the 21st Century. Through reading Allen's account the reader is reminded that McCarthyism that oft referred to "ism," was hardly the invention of McCarthy, nor was it unique to the late 1940's and 1950's. A red scare based on hysteria and fear proceeded "McCarthyism" by a good thirty years. The red scare that was brought about by the Bolshevik Revolution was ferocious in its intensity. Fanned by the winds of a handful of true radicals, the red scare that came immediately after the war was characterized by labor unrest, the rise of the Ku Klux Klan, the trampling of any ideas or books that had a hint of "Bolshevism," mass deportations of Communists (or suspected Communists), and the waiving of due process under law with mass arrests.
Allen says the big red scare faded quickly, as it became all too evident that there really wasn't much Communist or Bolshevik subversion to begin with. Also, the country was ready for The Next Big Thing. "Only Yesterday" details a series of manias that swept the country in the twenties. One of these manias was a revolution in morals. Here too, the reader of the year 2000 is reminded that the sixties and early seventies were not the only time period of a sexual revolution in twentieth-century America. The post-war decade of the twenties was a dramatic precursor to what came later, and an important breaking off point, for many at least, from Victorian mores.
Tired of Wilsonian idealism and weary from the First World War, American's were starved for a return to "normalcy." From Marion, Ohio, Warren Harding seemed like just the man to succeed Wilson. Harding was swept into the White House in what would be the beginning of twelve years of Republican rule from Pennsylvania Avenue. No great intellectual, Harding was a genial man and the country took to him. Meanwhile, as it would be revealed after his timely death, Harding ran one of the most corrupt administrations in the nation's history. The scandals came to light after Harding died and the moralistic (although not necessarily idealistic) Calvin Coolidge was just the man for the times. The "Coolidge Prosperity" is aptly named in that most of the 1920's were good times economically for all but a few sectors of the economy. Coolidge ran the country with a maxim of what was good for business was good for the country. If he had any ideology that was probably it.
The most capable of the three Republicans, or at least certainly the brightest, was Herbert Hoover, elected at the height of the Coolidge prosperity. Hoover was in office just over six months when the bubble burst The stock market-fueled by speculation-crashed, followed soon by a general economic collapse.
With the Scopes Trial, sports mania, and the introduction and popularity of radio, the nation went from one craze to the next. Whether it was anti-Bolshevism, or stock market mania, these were all national manias with the help of new forms of communication as well as new ways of mass manipulation by editors and announcers. Allen's "Only Yesterday" gives the reader a good feel for the events and trends of the 1920's, as seen by a man who had just lived through that decade.

During the 'Roaring 20's' they had it all!

This is a wonderful little book (301 pages) about life in America in the decade between World War I (Armistice Day) and the Panic of October 29, 1929. Frederick Lewis Allen - a career writer-editor for various national publications (Atlantic Monthly, Century, Harper's, etc.) wrote this book in 1931. Thus, he provides a quick, fresh glance back upon this exciting period - the "Roaring 20's" - that he'd personally just experienced.
Allen touches briefly, but poignantly, on all the important political, economical and social aspects of American life in these years. He includes capsule biographies of the
presidents: of Woodrow Wilson and his failure to successfully promote his `14 Point-based peace treaty and a League of Nations; of Warren G. Harding - handsome, personable, decent, but unaware, apparently, of the scandals taking place around him; of `silent' Calvin Coolidge and his era of prosperity; and of Herbert Hoover - well-meaning, but unable to find answers to the deteriorating economy and the approaching depression.
Allen also describes the people, events and activities that impacted the lives of Americans in those years, including the fear of communism and socialism (`The Red Scare'), women's emancipation, the growing proliferation and influence of radio, the impact of new magazines dealing with the movies, adventure, romance and true confessions, the importance of newly created newspaper empires and chains, beauty contests, changing fashions, cosmetics, advertising, and new automobiles (Ford's Model A). He describes the country's heroes and its new obsessions and fads: Babe Ruth and baseball, Charles Lindbergh and aviation, Clarence Darrow and William Jennings Bryan doing verbal battle over religion at the Scopes' Monkey Trial in Dayton, Tennessee, Jack Dempsey, Gene Tunney and boxing, Bobby Jones and golf, Bill Tilden and tennis, flag-pole sitters, flappers, marathon dancing, scandals and crimes.
Allen provides a wonderful chapter on prohibition - one of the really great issues of the era. The oft repeated message that man is destined to repeat past mistakes if he refuses to
heed the lessons of history is demonstrated, I think, in this very chapter. Having succeeded in legislating this specific moral behavior (i.e., abstinence)the federal and state governments quickly learned that the people were not going to obey this law voluntarily, and that no one was going to be able to enforce it (sound like somebody's 'drug war'?!). Prohibition introduced - indeed, precipitated - a fascinating, new period in U.S. history: the country was soon awash with bootleggers, bathtub gin, speakeasies, gangwars, lawbreaking, hipflasks, sex, and exuberant hell-raising. Al Capone arrived in Chicago from New York, hired some 700 goons, armed them with shotguns and machine guns and tasked them with monopolizing Chicago's beer and liquor trade. When enormous profits started rolling in, the gangsters then moved into other lucrative business activities - gambling, horse racing, boxing, dance halls, prostitution, unions, restaurants, distilleries, breweries, etc. Life was good.
Allen's chapter on the `Big Bull Market' and the subsequent `crash' of 1929 reminds one very much of America's more recent adventures involving Wall Street - of a
time when investors were mesmerized by the seemingly perpetual rise of stock prices, while being at the same time oblivious to any possibility that stock prices could fall and thereby wipe out almost overnight their newly acquired fortunes. Of course, that's what happened then, and that's what happened to current investors quite recently. So much for respecting the
lessons of history.
On a happier note - history also shows that readers have been buying, reading, and enjoying this little book for some 7 decades. So, please do heed just this one lesson: read this book yourself! It's history reading at its best!

A throughly excellent historical reference

This is exactly the type of history book I like to read. The subject matter is brought to life in a way simply not found in other authors. It reminded me quite a bit of Howard's Zinn's "A People's History of the United States" because I read that first and I wonder if Professor Zinn took a hint from Mr. Allen's style because they are very similar.
I will remember events, people and places in this book long after I am done reading it (for a college class) simply because of the way the author seems to be talking directly to you.
It is as if you are just sitting down for dinner, or a chat, and he's laying out the 1920's to you because you asked.
I am throughly impressed with this book and I am glad my Professor exposed me to it. I recommend it to anyone who has ever wondered what the "Roaring 20's" were all about.

Unforgettable

In this wonderfully detailed snapshot of a vanishing Ireland, a young woman falls in love too quickly, a young man falls in love too slowly, and the consequences are ultimately heart-wrenching.

The book starts in a passive voice that demands the reader's full attention to understand fully what is going on. After a bit I recognized this as a sort of verbal averted vision, conveying respect for a funeral in progress. The skill with which this was accomplished amazed me, and though I was glad to have the book then proceed in a more conventional narrative, I noted other areas where style variations conveyed as much of the book's substance as the literal sense of the words did. Wow!

The book is set in village/rural Ireland in a vaguely specified time that I guess would be about 1965. The material culture, characters, their interactions, institutions that effect them - everything that enters into the story is detailed concisely yet clearly enough to recognize this as a regional story, not just a generic Ireland, but probably in the middle-south of the island. It may be useful to know some details of Irish life already - for example it is helpful at one point know that in Ireland "Pioneers" are sworn teetotalers - but much of this you will get by osmosis through the book.

The characters are so real I will surely not forget them. The old servant, cast off by the fled aristocracy, whose dementia-driven ravings seem about as clear as a classical Oracle and ultimately turn the story. The young woman, "placed" on a widower's farm out of Catholic orphanage, married for respect and security, who stumbles on her first experience of love. The observant spinster, inheritor of the boarding house, who sees right to the heart of the girl's peril in a single bit of street conversation glimpsed through a window. No-one is very demonstrative, but the people can see each other's hearts directly. On reflection I understood that to depend on not only the inevitable interest and effective intimacy of a sparse village and rural population, but on their homogeneous culture. In America, and in much of Ireland today, the basis for that sort ready understanding is eroded, and misunderstanding is more likely. Thus I saw this as a story of a very particular time and place, not just in its setting but in its core.

I'm not going to detail the story, and I hope other reviewers will refrain as well; it deserves to be discovered as read. Parts of the book may seem very deliberate in the story's development, even a bit staid; but the full weight of the entire work comes to bear in the ending. I highly recommend this book to read and re-read.

All in Good Time

Consider the opening paragraph. "On a June evening some years after the middle of the last century Mrs Eileen Connulty passed through the town of Rathmoye: from Number 4 The Square to Magennis Street, into Hurley Lane, along Irish Street, across Cloughjordan Road to the Church of the Most Holy Redeemer. Her night was spent there." How beautifully it sets the period, establishes the mid-sized Irish town, brushes against the mild pretension of "Number 4 The Square," and adds its final piece of delayed information: Mrs. Connulty was in her coffin. William Trevor treads with assurance on familiar ground, but he never quite walks in straight lines; he will tell you what you need to know only when you need it. In this book where nothing much happens -- at least to the outward eye -- it is important that things be told at their proper pace and in the right order. At this, Trevor is the acknowledged master.

Mrs. Connulty's funeral gives us occasion to meet the main characters, who are few. The old lady's middle-aged son and daughter, both business people in the town. An elderly man whose mind is stuck thirty years back. Ellie, a naive young woman from the countryside. And a strange young man on a bicycle who takes photographs. The only major character not present is Dillahan, Ellie's husband, a sheep-farmer who has his reasons for avoiding company. I am only at the start of the second chapter, and already I have revealed more than the author (although the jacket blurb gives away almost the entire plot). Taking his time, but never wasting words, Trevor will tell us more of Dillahan's tragedy, and how he came to marry this dutiful girl from the orphanage. He will have us meet the bicycling photographer, Florian Kilderry, living alone in a crumbling mansion outside town. He will have Florian meet Ellie, unaware at first that she is married, and gradually let us enter both their hearts. And he will establish the older characters as town chorus, occasional bit-players, and individuals with past secrets of their own.

In novels such as THE STORY OF LUCY GAULT, and even more in his story collections like the perfectly-titled AFTER RAIN, Trevor has shown an amazing ability to emerge from apparent tragedy with an outcome that, though seldom the storybook ending, is emotionally consoling and morally right. Although LOVE AND SUMMER is not his strongest book, in this respect he does not disappoint. We may think we know these people and what is going to happen... but then Trevor slowly reveals more of each of them, here deepening our sympathies, there shading them with further knowledge. Over the course of the long summer, the emotional perspective slowly shifts. By the time the senile old man stumbles back into the picture, bringing a muddled epiphany, we will understand that the surprising resolution is really the only one possible.

William Trevor does it again - just wonderful

Brief summary, no spoilers:

This beautiful little book takes place during one summer. The time is the mid 1950s.

Ellie Dillahan is a young woman, married to a kindly farmer (referred to as "Dillahan" in the book) who is several years older. Ellie was a foundling, raised in the convent where she was left as an infant. She is sent directly from that convent to work for Dillahan, and after a couple of years they marry.

We know that years earlier there was a terrible accident of some sort involving Dillahan's wife and child. We see that Ellie is now a comfort to him and he is a good husband to her.

Into this picture comes Florian Kilderry, a young man raised affectionately by two bohemian parents. When he happens to be in Ellie's town taking pictures of a funeral, they meet, and Ellie falls in love.

Ellie must decide between her husband and Florian - and Trevor shows us that the choice is anything but easy.

There are other assorted wonderful characters. The book starts out with a funeral, and we become acquainted with the dead woman's twin daughter and son. Something terrible has happened to the daughter, and we know that she and the mother didn't get along. The daughter takes a special interest in Ellie and Florian.

We also meet a deranged older man named Orpen, who becomes an important player in the story.

This is a very short book, and you can probably read it in a few hours. But it packs a big punch. The language is just beautiful, and Trevor paints a wonderful picture of a small Irish town in the 1950s, and how our past has everything to do with the choices we make now.

Recommended. William Trevor is one of my favorite writers, and this book demonstrates why.

Highly Recommended to anyone interested in Astronomy or Cosmology

A very high quality book. It has details that aren't too complex, it has lots of pictures on big pages to help those who are a bit confused. It covers almost everything important about the studies of the Universe. It talks about the Universe, Celestial Objects, Matter, Atoms, Radiation, Gravity, The Big Bang, Life in the Universe, The Possible Fate of the Universe, How We View the Skies From Earth, Telescopes, The History of Space ranging from Ancient Astronomy, to the Space Age, and the present time. It also covers the Solar System, its history, the planets, the Sun, the Moon, The Kuiper Belt, Asteroids, Comets, Meteors. It also discusses the Milky Way, the stars, Nebulae, Extra-Solar Planets, the Galaxies and the clusters beyond the Milky Way, Constellation Charts, pictures of what the skies look like at night during every month of the year both North and South of the Equator. It also includes a Glossary too. The book is a bit large, but it's definitely a very interesting and colorful book with lots of pictures and details. I'd highly recommend it to anyone who is an astronomy buff or trying to become one.

Excellent book. Visually quite stunning and quite comprehensive

Excellent book. Visually quite stunning and quite comprehensive. One of the very best with its larger format. Being from 2008, it is rather overdue for an update, but it still has tremendous value for the many historical references. Then of course, 8 years of cosmological time is almost negligible on that scale. The binding is rather weak as it cannot handle the mass of this book. Otherwise, this is the go-to book about the Universe for me, as a basis for following, on a daily basis, the many new discoveries about the past, and what we may glean from it for the future (if we can keep it together, somewhat, here on planet Earth).

Fantastic book......horrible binding

A fantastic and interesting book for all! I love how the content is presented and the stunning pictures. The font is a bit small in places but there is so much information packed into this book it is well worth buying. I give 5 stars for the content but unfortunately the binding on this book is terrible. After about the 3rd time opening it, the binding has come apart. I'm sure the pages will start to fall out soon enough. I'll have to take off 2 stars for the poor quality of the binding. I purchased the paperback version. I'm not sure if the hard cover would have a better binding.

Not just very bad editing and grammar, but the worst part is the incomplete recipes which make it impossible to follow.

Not just very bad editing, there are many incomplete recipes which makes it impossible to follow. I was so hoping to keep this cook book and enjoy all the recipes they share because it all looks so wonderful, but after reading the beginning of the book and looking at a lot of recipes, there was no way I could justify paying over $30 for a book that has all these mistakes in it. The last straw was when I started finding recipes that didn't say what temperature to heat the oven. If they can fix all these mistakes, then I'd buy it and give it a 5-star rating, I'm sure. But until then, I wanted to warn others to save their money and not buy this book.

This is an awesome cook book!. I have been on a Ketogenic diet since April. I am down over 90 pounds. Many people quit a Ketogenic diet or do not start one because they think they will not be able to eat good food. Or they think they will not have much veriety in food choices. The wonderful authors of this book have proven that this is not true!!! If you know anyone on a Ketogenic diet or someone that should be ( health reasons) I would recommend whole heartedly that you share this book with them. This book also has information on starting and staying on this way of eating. Don't let them suffer through this way of life without knowing that they can do it while eating wonderfully delicious food!!! Better yet buy them a copy they will love you forever!

This is a great book and put together very nicely! I love the variety of recipes. There is something here for everyone. Some of the ingredients are hard to find in the typical grocery store but I just ordered what I needed online. Everything I have made so far has been very good and will become staples in the families meal plan! Thank you very much for all the ideas and helpful tips. You have proven that Low Carb and Ketogenic diets do NOT have to be boring and run of the mill! Keto On!

LESLIE C. ALLEN is Professor of Old Testament at Fuller Theological Seminary. Formerly he was Lecturer in Hebrew, Aramaic & Judaism at London Bible College, where he has taught since 1960. He holds the M.A. degree from Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, in Classics & Oriental Studies. His Ph.D. is from the Univ. College of London, in Hebrew. Among his publications are The Greek Chronicles Parts 1 and 2 and The Books of Joel, Obadiah, Jonah and Micah for The NIC.
