Pure enlightenment

Please read this. As the saying goes, "The mind is like a parachute; it doesn't work if it isn't open." So, keep an open mind to learn and learn and learn. Whatever you can imagine is probably happening! This book and "The Hollow Earth" show that the Earth shelters people inside--oh, yes--it is not a hot, molten core. These great beings try to keep her stabilized. They have a central sun, oceans, and beautiful gardens. It's a wonderful, loving place with an enormous library. I believe one day we'll get to see it! (Naw, they aren't sending the looney-bin van to pick me up at my door. I came a long way to get myself into an acceptance of these ideas, but by golly, I'm there and grateful for it. And grateful there are more and more who are making these discoveries.) We live in interesting times--tighten your "seat belts".

A tense and thoughtful coming-of-age story

With LIFE BEFORE, Michele Bacon has created a thoughtful and stirring portrait of a boy forced to grow up practically overnight. When his dark past erupts into tragedy, Xander Fife must leave behind his friends, his hometown, and everything he knows, and go on the run; flinging himself headlong into what he first views as a terrible limbo - a meager and fugitive existence eked out in fits and starts as he waits for a dangerous situation to resolve itself - he soon discovers things about life, and about himself, that he never knew before.

Xander undergoes some very painful evolution over the course of this novel. He has a believably complex relationship with his mother - whom he both loves and sometimes resents - and a realistic (if sometimes unfair) attitude towards her failings as a protector during the years when the pair of them suffered domestic abuse at the hands of Gary, Xander's father. These are heavy and complicated subjects, and Bacon does a wonderful job of not trying to water them down or candy-coat them for easier digestion. Equally impressive is the way in which she shows how a boy who has learned too much too early about self-reliance can still be completely at sea when forced to fend entirely for himself.

The friendships that Xander makes while in his self-imposed exile are developed beautifully, and each character he encounters feels whole, satisfying, and important. Based on the brief description of the novel, I think I expected the plot to be somewhat explosive, and was surprised to find that it was remarkably subtle instead - filled with small moments and quiet shifts in Xander's emotional journey that are movingly profound and life-changing. There's a lot of sadness here, but a lot of optimism as well, and I'm impressed by how well Bacon has balanced the two.

This book has it all; adventure, suspense, drama, and a great deal of heart. In this modern coming of age story, 17-year-old Alexander (Zander) Fife is intent on graduating high school and going off to college so that his real life can finally "begin." Zander's violent, abusive father has his own plans, though. Zander finds himself on the run and on his own for the first time.

Bacon does any amazing job navigating the emotional turmoil experienced by children who grow up in violent homes. Zander's guilt, embarrassment, and fear are palpable as are his hopes for a better life. You will find yourself pulling for Zander and all of the other children and teens with similar stories. Bravo!

This is a great book. Kids in abusive families are often forced to grow up before they should have to, but for Xander, the biggest change in his life comes in one harrowing moment. It's enough to make him give up everything, and watching that happen--reading this book--is really difficult at times. That's because his character is so well-drawn and realistic, as are the rest of the characters and the world around him. Xander has to figure out how to survive on his own, and the story of how he does that is really compelling.

About the Author
At an early age I developed an unconventional spirit for concept and the inspiration and courage for creation.

I was born Olivier Francois Rabbath, in Paris in 1961, the son of Mauricette Guigni a writer, and Francois Rabbath a composer virtuoso of double bass.

Growing up in a house close to Rue Victor Cousin, my primary school for seven years was two blocks from La Sorbonne, The University of Paris, area vibrant with the spirit of the Arts and Freedom (1968/1969).

At the age of nine, I begin to draw cartoons as advertisements and later as fashion sketches.

At Twenty-one I begin my studies at the Technical Institute of Applied Arts, where for the completion of my diploma, I introduce my first concept of a shoe collection for men and women, using no Last, no counter, and toe box, this Montage Sandalette technique provides a fresh chic look with active wear comfort... and so begins my career as a footwear designer.

During the past 25 years of intense creation and production as a shoe designer in Paris/Miami/New York, I have learned many techniques of construction by creating my own Lasts, patterns, graduations and construction. I make it my business to attend trade shows to research components and machinery, and to stay current on all new techniques and new industrial products related to the manufacture of footwear. For example: I developed different finishes and textures of leather to give a unique touch to my collection. Then from my drawings and computer renderings, I build the creation of the actual prototype in accordance to the specific machinery of the manufacturer.

In order to completed my career I opened my own school of footwear How to make boots from your garage located downtown Brooklyn, NY.

Giving away my skills and knowledge become essential to me. A skill that is applicable with ALL the details of business need.

The Werewolf Classic

This is my all-time favorite novel. I've read it so many times, I've lost track. When I first read it, I couldn't believe it wasn't a nineteenth century French novel, and that author Guy Endore was a twentieth century American.
Werewolf is the odyssey of born pariah Bertrand Caillet, a werewolf in spite of himself. Every life he touches suffers, whether he means it to or not. He rifles graves for sustenance during his lycanthropic episodes, and conceals his identity by becoming a French soldier during the Franco-Prussian War and the Communard uprising. He even finds the one woman whose love might save him, an equally bizarre but oddly touching Jewish outcast named Sophie with decidedly S&M tastes.
The novel is many things, not the least of which is episodic. It's a love story, a war story, a tragedy, and an absurdist comedy, by turns. It's grotesquely funny, and hilariously terrifying. Most of all, it's a mature social satire, and just an incredibly damn good read.
Crime of crimes, this magnificent literary masterpiece has once again fallen out of print. Seek it out in the used book bins, until some publisher manages to rediscover it and put it back on the shelves of your local bookstore.

Classic Horror

Guy Endore's 'The Werewolf of Paris' is rightly considered a classic of horror and being published in 1933 as one of the first literary treatments of lycanthropy. The story is told from the view of an American scholar studying in Paris who happens upon an old manuscript concerning the court martial of Sergeant Bertrand Caillet at the time of the Paris Commune. The story of Bertand is then recounted, how he was conceived when his mother was raped by a priest and how he was born on Christmas Eve, a bad omen according to local superstition. At first he seems like a normal boy but then he starts to have strange dreams and farm animals start to become mysteriously slaughtered. His adoptive uncle suspect something is amiss with young Bertrand, but keeps the suspicions of the local villagers lulled by locking Bertrand's room at night and feeding him raw meat, which keeps his lycanthropy quiescent. This works for a few years until Bertrand is old enough to travel outside the village for his school exams, where he has an unfortunate tryst with a prostitute and acquires a taste for human blood. When his uncle finds out what has happened Bertrand flees to Paris, where he gets caught up in the turmoil of the Franco-Prussian war.
Bertrand is presented as a likable young man afflicted with a condition beyond his power to control. We also sympathize with his uncle who follows him to Paris, conflicted by his love for his adopted son and guilt over the deaths caused by him. Bertrand's crimes are contrasted with the horrors of the Paris Commune and the even greater horrors of the reprisals by the Versailles government. The book meanders somewhat but is still a very good story and a classic of the genre.

We Are All Werewolves

Occasionally cited as to werewolves as DRACULA is to vampires, THE WEREWOLF OF PARIS is indeed a good book, generally well-written and at times scathingly insightful. Unfortunately, it is also only sporadically scary or suspenseful, and in fact the eponymous werewolf is really only a supporting player in his own tale. Author Guy Endore uses the story of the unfortunate Bertrand Caillet, son of a licentious priest and born on Christmas Eve, as a framing device through which to explore the nature of evil in the world and, most especially, the depths of depravity to which seemingly all men are capable of plunging if given the opportunity. To this end, Endore compares the evils of the cursed Bertrand, who grows up to be a young man consumed by dark, unholy urges and the proclivity to transform bodily into a wolf from time to time, to the mass wickedness of supposedly good men and women during the French civil wars of the late 19th-century. In short, Endore makes the case that every man is a werewolf. As a subtext, this is a worthy theme. The problem is that it isn't a subtext, but rather the primary narrative thrust of the whole novel. The werewolf story is really just a subplot, often completely lost in Endore's unfocused prose. Endore completely inverts what should have been a successful formula, so that instead of a great werewolf novel we are left with a passable war story in which one of the bit players happens to be a werewolf. THE WEREWOLF OF PARIS is certainly a must-read for fans of the werewolf sub-genre, simply because of its powerful reputation, but it is nowhere near to being the best of its kind. David Holland's MURCHESTON: A WOLF'S TALE is far superior in every way, and actually deals with some of the same themes of importance to Endore, as is Les Whitten's more conventional but expertly crafted MOON OF THE WOLF. THE WEREWOLF OF PARIS aims high, but falls well short of its author's ambition.

This book is an indispensable tool for the knifemaker.

The second of three knifemaking books by Jim Hrisoulas. The first book "The Complete Bladesmith", is excellent for the beginner to intermediate forger. This second book is more in-depth, and written for those that need knowledge in the field that will not be found elsewhere. The book is for the intermediate student, to the advanced master of the blade. Again, Jim gives his expertise and knowledge openly to the practitioner, who wants to make knifemaking a serious part of life. For those interested in the production of swords, this book that has something to offer you. This volume covers all aspects of the bladesmithing trade, including the varied techniques and details which can forge, what would otherwise be a plain knife, into a working piece of art. Secrets, tips, tools, and techniques, are spelled out with the help of clear diagrams and explanations. Helpful compound tables, plus formulas for the manufacturing of flux, quenching, and etching mediums, are all included in this comrehensive volume. Jim also introduces the techniques for the creation of damascus steel in this volume. Those interested in the manufacture of damascus steel will also find a source of study, in Jims latest book, "The Pattern-Welded Blade", which is strictly for the advanced forger that desires to create damascus and mosaic patterens, and who has worked through Jims first two books. A worthy sequal to The Complete Bladesmith

This book is a great sequel to The Complete Bladesmith, one of the best works I've read on the subject. It is well written and full of sound, practical information for the experienced bladesmith, including everything from laying out your shop (e.g., lighting, ventilation, tools) to building and using a forge to make battle-worthy blades and works of anachronistic art. Contents include essential information about steels and alloys, compounds and formulas, and weights and measures that you need to successfully complete projects, along with advanced forging techniques, power hammer applications, grinding, heat treating, tempering, hilts, metal and wood finishing, leatherworking and scabbard making, damascus steel (pattern-welding), sword making, spear making, and ax making. There are also excellent chapter on Japanese nonferrous alloys. Mr. Hrisoulas's blade crafting skills are first rate and his writing talents readily convey his knowledge and experience in a way that you can immediately apply to your own work. Very well done.

About the Author
Janet E. Gardner, an associate professor of English at University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth, has published numerous essays on contemporary drama, especially modern British drama and the work of Caryl Churchill. She has received several grants and awards for research into current teaching technologies, and is at work on a nationwide study of drama and theatre pedagogy. She is the editor of 12 Plays: A Portable Anthology and co-editor of Literature: A Portable Anthology (both with Bedford/St. Martin’s).

The product is fine. The service was horrendous! Delivery from NJ to NY was extraordinarily long and I had to purchase the book from the book that told was shipped on 2/3 and had still nto received 3 weeks later.
