Three words...

I have three words to describe the book. Credulous, fatuous and appalling. I will expand each of these in turn. SPOILER ALERT!! To review this book I will reveal important events in the book. Some readers may wish to skip this review if one plans to read "The Shack". The book opens with an introduction where the author claims to have been told this story first hand by his long time friend, Mack, the protagonist. This is I believe presented as a factual account, not a plot device. This seems credulous as the story which follows is extremely fantastic. For me it has no creditability. The plot of the book is Mack and his family taking a vacation at a lakeside camp ground in Oregon. Mack's six year old daughter, Missy, is abducted and murdered, presumably raped. Three years later Mack finds a note in his mailbox inviting him to return to the shack, the scene of the murder. This note is from "Papa", Mack's wife's moniker for god. Mack decides to accept the invitation. He arrives shack to find it not a decrepit hunting cabin, but a fully livable home. Also although it is deep in a Oregon forest, in the dead of winter, the property, about an acer, is in full, riotous summertime bloom. Mack is greeted at the cabin door by a black woman clearly modeled on clichés of an antebellum black nanny. This woman turns out to be god! (one would think this gender shifting sinful) Jesus is there, a mid-eastern carpenter/handyman, (very creative) and the holy spirit is a ephemeral Asian woman, all nicely PC. The he/she god bustles around the kitchen making pies, whipping up piles of greens and veggies. They tree live together in perfect domestic tranquility and can share a good family laugh when Jesus drops a bowl of pancake batter. All this seems rather fatuous. It is also curious that Papa created this bubble of lush, bountiful bloom, all the food is homegrown, just for Mack but neglects to provide bountiful crops for say, drought ravaged areas of Africa. This seems a shabby use of divine power. After a meal one evening Jesus and Mack set out for a walk, the point of which is to talk about Missy's death privately. Jesus assures Mack he was with Missy the whole time and that Missy prayed for her family and was, "very brave", which he offers to the grieving father as spurious comfort. This is appalling! Here is Jesus, supposedly god incarnate riding along with an abducted child, which knows will be murdered, likely raped, and does nothing to save her! What human man would in such a situation not try to save the child? All Jesus does is ride along. But then he did nothing about the Inquisition, witch craze, sordid church corruption... so what is one child? This is where I have stopped reading. I'm uncertain if I'll toss this book into the closet unfinished or try to endure to the end.

Especially meaningful to those that see God as stern or far-away, but doesn't replace actual disciplined study of the bible

This is an allegory about the nature of God and His relationship to Man, similar in kind to “The Pilgrim’s Progress” by John Bunyan. As with all allegories, it can enlighten truths in a short paragraph that may not be understood in a long chapter of theology. Unfortunately, allegories also have the weakness of being like a “graphic novel” compared to a true novel, simplifying or paraphrasing original material (in this case, the Bible) to the point of distortion.

Things I Liked:
- The depiction of the Trinity as a joyful internal relationship of love, which God desires to share with us.
- The deep love of God for Man (with love manifest differently through each of the Trinity), full of sacrifice and joy, without condemnation.
- A reasonably engaging plot to explore the topics.

Things I Didn’t Like:
- The “romping” good humor of the Trinity for each other and Man was over the top for me. There was no room for “Fear of the Lord” in this story, at all.
- No real iscussion of hell, except to say God wants us all to be with Him.
- Some minor eco-babble, man-bashing, use of the math concept of “fractals”, etc. were annoying.
- Some, mostly minor, points of theology were just wrong in my opinion.

I think this book would be especially meaningful to those that see God as stern or far-away, or for those that carry anger/resentments for wrongs done to them. So, this book can take its place with other recent Christian-pop books like “Wild at Heart” and “A Purpose-Driven Life” that have proven meaningful to some. Just don’t make the mistake that it replaces more disciplined study of the scriptures and serious books of theology that illuminate a greater portion of the Word. If asked to defend your faith, or wondering yourself wht the scriptures say about a topic, you can’t say, “I read something about that in ‘The Shack!’” On the other hand, allegories are the equivalent to parables, and we know Someone that was pretty effective in using those to teach deep concepts through illustrations.

Gut wrenching storyline

Spoiler alert: A lot of people really love this book. It was well written & the author went into great detail to explain his perception of God. If you believe in an invisible force that contains pure love, does not judge & only wants your love in return, then this book is for you. It seems I am not there yet. I could not get past the death of an innocent child at the hands of a serial killer even though the main character is released from the great sadness of losing his previous child by forgiving her killer. I was depressed for days after reading this story. I understand the concept that forgiveness can release victims from the negative emotional attachment to their agressors. Maybe if I also had the experience of actually meeting God in his three forms in person, I too would come to understand more fully the meaning of unconditional love. In the meantime, I will continue living my life by being as kind as I can be to all I meet. However, if I were to meet anyone abusing a child, I might just feel the need to kick them in their private area, then call the police.

About the Author
John Rowan is the author of a number of books, including The Reality Game: A guide to humanistic counselling and therapy (2nd edition) (Routledge 1998), Ordinary Ecstasy: The dialectics of humanistic psychology (3rd edition) (Routledge 2001), Subpersonalities (Routledge 1990), The Transpersonal in psychotherapy and counselling (Routledge 1993), and Healing the Male Psyche: Therapy as Initiation (Routledge 1997). He has co-edited The plural self. Multiplicity in everyday life with Mick Cooper (Sage 1999). There are chapters by him in many other books on psychotherapy. He is on the Editorial Board of Self & Society, the Journal of Humanistic Psychology, the Transpersonal Psychology Review and the Counselling Psychology Review. He is a founder member of the Association of Humanistic Psychology Practitioners. He is a past member of the Governing Board of the UK Council for Psychotherapy, representing the Humanistic and Integrative Section. He is a Fellow of the British Psychological Society and a Fellow of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy. He teaches, supervises and leads groups at the Minster Centre, where he is also the Middlesex University Link Tutor. His workshop interests are creativity, research, subpersonalities and the transpersonal. He has had six books of poetry published. He and his wife live in North Chingford, London: he has four children and four grandchildren from a previous marriage.

Michael Jacobs was for many years Director of the Counselling and Psychotherapy programme at the University of Leicester, having before that worked as a counsellor and psychotherapist in the same university. He is now in independent practice and living in Swanage, Dorset, where he supervises counsellors, sees clients and continues to write and edit. His books on psychodynamic counselling and therapy are used as key texts on many training courses - notably The Presenting Past (1998 - 2nd edition - Open University Press), Psychodynamic Counselling in Action (1999, 2nd edition, Sage) and Still Small Voice (2nd edition 1993, SPCK). He has also written on Freud and Winnicott, which books have been translated into Chinese. He is a Fellow of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy, a psychodynamic psychotherapist registered with UKCP, and an honorary life member of the Bath Centre for Psychotherapy and Counselling. His semi-retired status gives him time for walking in the nearby Purbeck Hills, listening to music, reading biographies and involvement in the local community. He is married, and has three children and two grandchildren from a previous marriage.

Rich overview that doesn't numb your mind with jargon

Excellent well researched overview of the current ways the therapist can use their self experience within the different therapeutic modalities currently available (e.g., Psychoanalytic, Humanistic, Existential, Gestalt, Transpersonal, Behavioral etc.) The authors divide the use of self into 3 broad categories -- Instrumental, Authentic, Transpersonal. In each they give a clear discussion of the advantages and potential disadvantages of using one's self experience. Also they give a clear delineation (with case examples) of how the different therapeutic modalities would handle and react to these different uses of self experience with a client. Should be mandatory reading for anyone currently in the field or considering going into it. Bonus, it makes good headway in clarifying the often convoluted jargon that attends discussions of self experience.

The best way to understand and calibrate your code safety factors

I took Structural probability in the winter term and I found this book very helpful. If you are civil engineer, you have to have this book because it shows you how to calibrate your codes such as the ACI 318 factors. The most important chapters to me was ch1-ch5.

An excellent textbook!

I bought this book (at Amazon.com) to get a better understanding on the basic principles of structural reliability assessment (I 'm concerned with the probabilistic estimation of the remaining life of pressurized pipelines containing active corrosion defects in oil and gas distribution pipeline networks in Mexico). This thorough, well organized, volume is in my opinion the most comprehensive treatment available nowadays. It is mainly devoted to the probabilistic structural safety analysis and includes both theoretical foundations and practical examples in a coherent and logical presentation. It follows a clear step by step scheme (a quite useful feature for newcomers) covering basic issues such as measures of structural reliability and more complex and advanced topics including time dependent reliability and resistance and load modeling. The book also contains a brief on probabilistic theory which I've found very useful as a quick (and refreshing) guide. For newcomers, the first two chapters are essential to understand the subject. The author devotes the core of the book to a rigorous, detailed discussion of methods to compute probability of failure in engineering structures with simple and complex (multiple) limit state functions (and their evolution with time). The Monte Carlo integration approach, the first order methods FOM and the first order second moment methods FOSM are reviewed in detail and practical aspects of their computational implementations are given. It is to underline the excellent discussions given of limit state functions in load-resistance space which allow to clearly understand the procedures and strategies used by the above mentioned reliability methods to compute checking points, safety index and probability of failure. The last part of the book is devoted to load and resistance modeling, codes of structural reliability and probabilistic evaluation of existing structures. Civil engineers will profit this part as I did because of the lack of reliable data on load and resistance structural parameters variability (in many fields, plausible probabilistic methods can be only achieved by judiciously assuming or modeling load and resistance fluctuations, so that these chapter are welcome). This book cover this subject in some detail, emphasizing in steel and concrete members. The probabilistic reliability assessment of existing structures, the latest subject covered by the book is useful in pointing out the necessity of appropriate repairs actions on such structures, how to estimate deterioration and which actions have to be carried out in order to reduce risk levels. Some drawbacks have to be mentioned: (i) practical examples are scarce in key sections such as 1.5.3 (generalized reliability problem formulation), 1.5.4 (conditional reliability problems) and 6.6.3 (FOSM/FOR methods for unconditional failure probability), (ii) the level of abstract thinking required to understand many aspects covered by the book could result quite demanding for newcomers or readers that do not master probabilistic theory, (iii) mathematical details given for the FOSM algorithm are rather cumbersome and only two references to practical computational implementations of this method are given. As a matter of fact, I`ve preferred and used a practical implementation of this method published by M. Ahammed and R. E. Melchers (the author) in Engineering Structures(Vol. 17, No. 2, page. 74), and (v) I`ve noted some typographical errors (for example, constant b4 used in expression A.59 must be negative valued -see the book by Abramowitz, pag. 239 ). In spite of these drawbacks, I strongly recommend this book for those people concerned with the subject, especially newcomers, I repeat, this is the best available textbook in the market
