The book contains enough material for a typical one semester course. The end-of-chapter problems are predominantly quantitative in nature. However, most are not straight forward calculations based on substituting values from the chapter in to the appropriate formula. The problems are designed to require the students to analyze information, to make use of material from previous chapters, to correlate data from various sources (not only from the textbook itself but from library, internet or other sources) and in many cases to estimate quantities based on interpretation of graphical data, interpolation of values and sometime just plain common sense. While maintaining a quantitative approach to the study of energy in our society, the text and accompanying problems show that this is a complex and very interdisciplinary topic. This approach is intended to provide students with an appreciation for the real problems that are encountered in the understanding of how we produce and use energy, and the realization that, while exact calculations are important and necessary, a broadly based analysis is often most appropriate.

About the Author
Richard A. Dunlap is a professor in the Department of Physics and Atmospheric Science at Dalhousie University and has a cross-appointment in the College of Sustainability. He received a B.S. in Physics from Worcester Polytechnic Institute (1974), an A.M. in Physics from Dartmouth College (1976) and a Ph.D. in Physics from Clark University (1981). Since 1981 he has been on the faculty at Dalhousie University. From 2001 to 2006 he was Killam Research Professor of Physics, and since 2009 he has been Director of the Dalhousie University Institute for Research in Materials. He currently is a member of the DREAMS Program (Dalhousie Research in Energy, Advanced Materials and Sustainability). Prof. Dunlap is author of three previous text books Experimental Physics: Modern Methods (Oxford 1988), The Golden Ratio and Fibonacci Numbers (World Scientific 1997) and An Introduction to the Physics of Nuclei and Particles (Brooks/Cole 2004). Over the years his research interests have included critical phenomena, magnetic materials, amorphous materials, quasicrystals, hydrogen storage, and superconductivity. His current research activities are primarily in the area of materials for advanced rechargeable batteries. He has published more than 280 refereed research papers.

This book gives a great overview of energy fundamentals and energy consumption through fossil fuels, nuclear and potential renewables. It has the right level of technical backing and formulae to allow you to understand and derive the concepts, but also easy to understand. My graduate university uses this book for a physics course in energy basics.

Oracle Primavera are out of the gate with version 15.1 of P6. And Paul Harris is keeping up the pace with his latest corresponding training manual, Project Planning & Control Using Primavera P6, Ver 15.1, Professional Client and Optional Client by Paul Eastwood Harris. Having a copy of this book is not an option I think it s a requirement. Primavera/Oracle continues to make their software for planning & scheduling professionals more complex by adding to its very advanced capabilities and feature set. But Paul Harris, an experienced scheduler and P6 user, not an IT person, has written this terrific training and reference manual for the P6 student/user who understands how to manage projects but needs to learn how to use the software. Among this manual s compendium of tools, techniques, tips, and traps to using Primavera s latest software package. Harris wins again by writing a clear, user-friendly book to help the reader learn and use P6 effectively and efficiently. Using the successful format from his previously published manuals for Microsoft Project, P3, SureTrak, and previous P6 versions, Harris covers the bulk of P6 s feature set by flattening and shortening the steep learning curve of this complex software package. I ve used Harris books in my company s training classes for over a decade because of his clear writing style, the depth of feature coverage, and the ability to use the book as a reference book in day-to-day use. This book follows the lead of its predecessors it guides the user through a logical sequence of understanding the principles of project management, the steps required to set-up a project, and those required to update and maintain a project. Due to the complexity and feature set of P6, Harris book is designed to be used in a 3-day training class. The exercises are available as a free download from Harris web site. Harris goes end-to-end by covering the basics of the software and its advanced functions such as User and Administration Preferences and Advanced Scheduling Options, the 3 types of calendars (unlike P3 s 2 types), Roles and Resources and multiple ways of organizing the project (WBS, OBS, Contract, Phase, etc.). Harris also does a particularly good job in explaining the differences between 3 ways of stating percent complete: Physical Percent Complete, Duration Percent Complete, and Units Percent Complete and the 4 Activity Types. He has also introduces some new topics not covered in his pervious Version 7.0 book , including Customizable Menus , Tiled and Tabbed Windows , Auto-Reorganization , Time-scaled Logic Diagrams and more. And not only does he explain how to use the program at the project level, but he also explains the parent application of Primavera s Enterprise Management which filled a huge void for me when first using the book. Since scheduling requirements vary from project-to-project and company-to-company, Harris explains how to build and maintain schedules both with and without resources (manpower, equipment, money, materials). If you are using Primavera s latest complex and IT intensive scheduling system, I urge you to use Paul Harris treatise on Project Planning & Control Using Oracle® Primavera P6 Ver 8.2, Professional Client and Optional Client. Paul Harris has been writing books on how best to use Primavera software tools for as long as I can remember. I first started using P3 in 1985 and have been intimately involved with the software ever since. Paul Harris is an author who makes his day to day living using the tool and it shows in the details of his books. He catches the little things that pop up in the middle of an assignment and are never covered in the standard classes. This book is so comprehensive, with well placed visual pointers and guides, that depending on what chapters are selected, it can be used for a variety of classes from basic to advanced with special classes for costs and resources. This is not just a training manual but should be used as a constant reference "bible" for when you have to use parts of the software that you haven't used for a while. With a focus on application for construction, Paul does not miss anything in working through the definition of your project from the WBS, through coding, activity and relationship definition, how the critical path algorithm calculates (it's not a mystery like some other well known scheduling tools), right on through to resource and cost definition, assignment and analysis. Experience has shown that training provided by trainers who actually make a living using the tool they train on provides the best in-depth knowledge transfer experience for the student. Using a training manual that is written from the same perspective also enhances the training experience. As a practicing project planner scheduler and a Primavera P6 instructor, I have found this book immensely useful. The book layouts out in very clear terms, everything needed for a user to master this often-times complex application. This is the only book that I have found that comes from an objective point of view, explaining the ins and outs of this expansive program. Planning and scheduling a project can be an extremely difficult and unforgiving task for an individual or organization. Adding the need to model the delivery method in Primavera P6 can cause many unprepared users high anxiety. In his book, Paul layouts out in very clear and concise steps the project plan development process in Primavera P6 and why they are needed. I find this section in itself indispensable. As a part-time instructor of the software, I always, always, always refer my student to this section of the book so they can formulate in their minds the approach needed for creating an effective project plan. Other sections of the book also add enormous value in understanding things such project creation via the project creation wizard, importing and finally the reflection process. Other important topics covered are work breakdown structures, activities types, duration types, percent complete types, activity relationship types, baselines, as well as the updating/progressing process. Advance topics are also covered for those needing an understanding of multi-project scheduling, global functionally and software administration. The book brilliantly handles project modeling categories of task driven schedules and resource loaded schedules. Paul initially layouts out a developmental structure to expose the P6 user to methodologies associated with each modeling category and then throughout the remainder of the book, details out each of the processes. This framework can serve as a repeatable model when creating organizational processes and procedures that will maximize and individual or an organizations use of Primavera P6. As a project planner/scheduler, I use the book as an invaluable desktop reference. I find it priceless when trying to model complex delivery methods. The book is set up in a fashion that allows a user to quickly get to needed information. It also is written from an unbiased point of view explaining various pitfalls of potential methodologies to be utilized. Paul has wisely included how Microsoft Project, Primavera P3 as well as previous versions of P6 handle certain functions as compared to the current version referenced in the book. Paul s experience with these other software programs allows him to give valuable insight into these concise excerpts. He also points out in the book, areas of caution that gives the user important advice on utilizing various components of Primavera P6. If somebody would ask me what words of advice I would give a new user of Primavera P6, I would without a doubt say get training and get Paul Harris s book on Primavera P6. Paul Harris holds an Honours Degree in Civil Engineering obtained in the UK and is a Certified Cost Engineer through AACEI International, a PRINCE2 Registered Practitioner and a Managing Successful Programmes Registered Practitioner. Pure enlightenment

Please read this. As the saying goes, "The mind is like a parachute; it doesn't work if it isn't open." So, keep an open mind to learn and learn and learn. Whatever you can imagine is probably happening! This book and "The Hollow Earth" show that the Earth shelters people inside--oh, yes--it is not a hot, molten core. These great beings try to keep her stabilized. They have a central sun, oceans, and beautiful gardens. It's a wonderful, loving place with an enormous library. I believe one day we'll get to see it! (Naw, they aren't sending the looney-bin van to pick me up at my door. I came a long way to get myself into an acceptance of these ideas, but by golly, I'm there and grateful for it. And grateful there are more and more who are making these discoveries.) We live in interesting times--tighten your "seat belts".

A tense and thoughtful coming-of-age story

With LIFE BEFORE, Michele Bacon has created a thoughtful and stirring portrait of a boy forced to grow up practically overnight. When his dark past erupts into tragedy, Xander Fife must leave behind his friends, his hometown, and everything he knows, and go on the run; flinging himself headlong into what he first views as a terrible limbo - a meager and fugitive existence eked out in fits and starts as he waits for a dangerous situation to resolve itself - he soon discovers things about life, and about himself, that he never knew before.

Xander undergoes some very painful evolution over the course of this novel. He has a believably complex relationship with his mother - whom he both loves and sometimes resents - and a realistic (if sometimes unfair) attitude towards her failings as a protector during the years when the pair of them suffered domestic abuse at the hands of Gary, Xander's father. These are heavy and complicated subjects, and Bacon does a wonderful job of not trying to water them down or candy-coat them for easier digestion. Equally impressive is the way in which she shows how a boy who has learned too much too early about self-reliance can still be completely at sea when forced to fend entirely for himself.

The friendships that Xander makes while in his self-imposed exile are developed beautifully, and each character he encounters feels whole, satisfying, and important. Based on the brief description of the novel, I think I expected the plot to be somewhat explosive, and was surprised to find that it was remarkably subtle instead - filled with small moments and quiet shifts in Xander's emotional journey that are movingly profound and life-changing. There's a lot of sadness here, but a lot of optimism as well, and I'm impressed by how well Bacon has balanced the two.

This book has it all; adventure, suspense, drama, and a great deal of heart. In this modern coming of age story, 17-year-old Alexander (Zander) Fife is intent on graduating high school and going off to college so that his real life can finally "begin." Zander's violent, abusive father has his own plans, though. Zander finds himself on the run and on his own for the first time.

Bacon does any amazing job navigating the emotional turmoil experienced by children who grow up in violent homes. Zander's guilt, embarrassment, and fear are palpable as are his hopes for a better life. You will find yourself pulling for Zander and all of the other children and teens with similar stories. Bravo!

This is a great book. Kids in abusive families are often forced to grow up before they should have to, but for Xander, the biggest change in his life comes in one harrowing moment. It's enough to make him give up everything, and watching that happen--reading this book--is really difficult at times. That's because his character is so well-drawn and realistic, as are the rest of the characters and the world around him. Xander has to figure out how to survive on his own, and the story of how he does that is really compelling.

About the Author
At an early age I developed an unconventional spirit for concept and the inspiration and courage for creation.

I was born Olivier Francois Rabbath, in Paris in 1961, the son of Mauricette Guigni a writer, and Francois Rabbath a composer virtuoso of double bass.

Growing up in a house close to Rue Victor Cousin, my primary school for seven years was two blocks from La Sorbonne, The University of Paris, area vibrant with the spirit of the Arts and Freedom (1968/1969).

At the age of nine, I begin to draw cartoons as advertisements and later as fashion sketches.

At Twenty-one I begin my studies at the Technical Institute of Applied Arts, where for the completion of my diploma, I introduce my first concept of a shoe collection for men and women, using no Last, no counter, and toe box, this Montage Sandalette technique provides a fresh chic look with active wear comfort... and so begins my career as a footwear designer.

During the past 25 years of intense creation and production as a shoe designer in Paris/Miami/New York, I have learned many techniques of construction by creating my own Lasts, patterns, graduations and construction. I make it my business to attend trade shows to research components and machinery, and to stay current on all new techniques and new industrial products related to the manufacture of footwear. For example: I developed different finishes and textures of leather to give a unique touch to my collection. Then from my drawings and computer renderings, I build the creation of the actual prototype in accordance to the specific machinery of the manufacturer.

In order to completed my career I opened my own school of footwear How to make boots from your garage located downtown Brooklyn, NY.

Giving away my skills and knowledge become essential to me. A skill that is applicable with ALL the details of business need.

Shoemakers, like ANY other business, have to be approach like an entrepreneur.

THERE IS NO ONE TASK YOU CANNOT NEGLECT.

Basically you need to cover all aspect of your business. A one man show if you want.

Today I became an Artist selected by the Smithonian Museum Craft Show, in Washington DC, and got invited by Parsons The New School of Fashion in New York City to teach Shoe Construction.

My Goal is to share my knowledge and professional experience to people who needs to learn seriously this beautiful skill.
