Another amazing book by Art Ludwig

I recommend that you get the 3 companion books on greywater treatment "Create an Oasis", "Branched Drain Greywater Systems" and "Builder's Greywater Guide". The information in these volumes will keep most of us far more informed than most of the regulators, the system builders, and the experts-in-theory. These volumes are real-world gems.
Art Ludwig has cut to the core of wastewater issues. He's obviously done all of his homework, mulled-over the variables, and come up with a common sense, economically reasonable, environmentally responsible approach to wastewater. I expect to save money that I would have spent on a post-septic tank, aerobic unit that would seemingly have been ecologically responsible; but because of the technological overkill, ultimately that system would have defeated my altruistic environmental concerns.
The sheer volume of information in each of his greywater books puts other sources to shame. Each volume is very well written, being clear, amusing, and concise. I can't imagine improving these books, other than keeping the information updated with future editions.
These books talk the talk and walk the walk better than anything else that I've seen. Buy a set for yourself, a set for your neighbors, and a set for the regulators.

Don't treat home without it

In the annals of 'appropriate' technology Art Ludwig's work stands out as a no-nonsense guide to getting it right the first time. Ludwig has been-there-done-that-and-bought-the-T-shirt. Instead of unprocessed data mixed with wishful thinking he gives fifty pages of distilled results. He explains in plain english what works, what doesn't and why. Clear technical descriptions allow professional contracters or do-it-yourselfers to design, build and operate graywater systems under varied conditions. In our years of related international work we've met only a few practitioners who combine experience with clarity. This guide reflects such rare talent. Don't treat home without it.
Doug Mulhall and Katja Hansen built wastewater recycling facilities worldwide and are authors of the first tropical wastewater recycling guide to be published by the European Commission.

Don't waste your time

We must remember that it was written in 1972 - prior to "golden days" of NLP, CBT, Body Language and so on. It is absolutely boring and doesn't give any sensible advice what so ever. Yes, I bought it some 3 decades ago and read it recently hoping that it would make some sense, it still doesn't. Books from Richard Wiseman and NLP are more entertaining.

This comprehensive work traces the development of human rights from its conceptual roots in the Enlightenment to its full expression in the United Nation's 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Hunt begins with a wonderfully detailed lexicographical survey of 18th century uses of rights language ("rights of man," "natural rights," "rights of humanity") to show the many currents that led to the first modern declaration of human rights, the Bill of Rights. She then triangulates the upswing in rights language with both the appearance of the novel of letters (such as Rousseau's Julie and Samuel Richardson's Pamela and Clarissa) and the rise of portraiture in the mid- to late-18th century. These particular art forms, she argues, fostered a sense of individuality in their audience and empathy for their subjects, most frequently "regular folks" rather than nobles, royalty, or saints. She then takes the reader through 250 years of rights legislation, covering the French Revolution's Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen, various anti-torture measures and 20th century campaigns against human rights violations, among others. Despite the obvious academic grounding of this sweeping work, it is aimed at a wider audience and will appeal to most readers interested either in the history of human rights or in European or American history.

A step towards understanding human rights as cultural history

"Inventing Human Rights" is a short, jargon-free book that would be appropriate for an undergraduate class or general readership. The introduction and first chapter is an examination of the cultural origins of the human rights ideology. The second chapter is a history of torture. Chapters 3-5 are a "conventional" history of human rights as traced through laws, constitutions, political philosophy, etc. from roughly 1750 to the present. There is a refreshing emphasis on the French Enlightenment (which is too often neglected in works in English).

Regarding research methods, Professor Hunt is good at tracing the circulation of ideas via the circulation of books. Careful attention is paid to when certain phrases (e.g. "rights of man", "human rights") were first used, how many times important books were reprinted, what percentage of 18th century homes and libraries they could be found in, and literacy rates.

The introduction poses the question "How is it that rights came to seem self-evident in the late 18th century?" Prof. Hunt proposes an explanation in terms of the diffusion of the cultural practices of "autonomy" and "empathy", where autonomy supplies the substance of the new ethic and empathy, the motive (pp. 29-30).

When Hunt writes of autonomy as a "cultural practice" she is referring primarily to the increasing sense of delicacy regarding the human body described in the work of Norbert Elias. She thinks, for instance, that here one can find the origin of the new repugnance at judicial torture (pp 82-83).

Following Benedict Anderson's work on nationalism, Hunt maintains that just as the rise of printing made it possible for people who were widely dispersed to conceptualize themselves as part of a single national polity, the late 18th century craze for epistolary novels helped readers to conceptualize a common humanity (p.32). Novels helped readers empathize more habitually and with a greater variety of people (pp. 38-42). They also provided a model of "interiority" and autonomy for readers to emulate (pp. 45, 48).

What makes cultural history exciting (and controversial) is the way that cultural historians derive changes in moral sensibilities from changes social structure, thereby offering a social-scientific explanation of why, when and how our values change over time. For example, in the work of Norbert Elias, the increasing sense of shame over bodily functions was caused by the transformation of the aristocracy from a warrior caste to a class dependent on royal favor whose political survival required charm. And in Michel Foucault's (classic) account of the abolition of torture the adoption of "the gentle way in punishment" was due to the diffusion of new strategies of social control oriented towards efficiency and productivity which were necessary to the rise of capitalism.

But Hunt has little to say about the relationship between the new ideals and structural demands of the emerging economic order. Rather, she depicts the human rights ideology as a kind of emergent property, caused by (but not beholden to) the increasing prosperity of the late 18th century, which, once invented, proceeds with an "inner logic" of its own. (p. 34, 150ff).

Interesting Exploration of Socio-Political Evolution (Revolution?)

Although written by a professor, this book is not just an important tool for students, but also an appealing read to those interested in constitutional history, European and American history, and political rights and freedoms. I found this book incredibly relevant since I see America as a whole and each subculture within struggling to define human rights in almost every political and social aspect! From immigration, marriage equality, to gun control, just to name a few. In that respect, understanding the history of how our rights as humans evolved and how our constitution was initially interpreted is viscerally important for every member of a nation founded on the notion of "self-evident truths" and "inalienable rights."

How interesting is it then, when Hunt brings up that "...the claim of self-evidence, crucial to human rights even now, gives rise to paradox: if equality of rights is so self-evident, then why did this assertion have to be made and why was it only made in specific times and places? How can human rights be universal if they are no universally recognized?"

This thought-provoking book uses straightforward structure and wording to cover the topic and delves even further into history by exploring the French Enlightenment and the humanities. Hunt attributes literature to founding the principles that our own Constitution was built on. We've certainly come a long way from the barbaric days of trials by ordeal, which Robert Bartlett brings to life brilliantly in Trial by Fire and Water: The Medieval Judicial Ordeal. Inventing Human Rights is a great book, add it to your reading list!

How compassion works

Hunt's thesis, as I read this fine book, is that although compassion was not a new idea in the eighteenth century, injunctions to compassion (from Christianity, for example) were not working to affect public life. Torture, public executions, etc. were habituating Western European populations to high levels of violence in daily life. Associating the rise of the novel to new sensibilities that began to alter society, Hunt argues that novels enabled large numbers of people (especially the designers and administrators of society) to understand the subjectivity of people unlike them, and thus to empathize with the sufferings of others. She suggests that these new sensibilities had real social effects in the development of human rights. Hunt traces these real effects in the language by which human rights came to be seen as universal and "inalienable." Historical theses based on simultaneity can never be proved, but Hunt makes a strong case for novels' ability to make compassion work in eighteenth century Western Europe.

Vast and stunning

"Myriad Worlds" is a translation of the first of ten books in Tibetan contained within the major treatise "The Infinite Ocean of Knowledge", which itself is a commentary on the root verses "The Encompassment of All Knowledge."

From the preface of "Myriad Worlds": The translation of the entire body of "The Infinite Ocean of Knowledge" has been one of (late) Kalu Rinpoche's most ambitious projects. (...) Kalu Rinpoche explained the importance of this work as follows: "(...) If this great work is translated into English, the nature of all samsara and nirvana will appear as vividly as a reflection in a clear mirror in the minds of the most learned people of the world, as though the expanse of their understanding were illuminated with sunlight."

"Myriad Worlds" discusses Buddhist cosmography and the genesis of beings who inhabit the universe.

Kongtrul delineates four levels of cosmology:

1. The numerically definite cosmology of the Individual Way (hinayana), in which the collective force of the evolutionary actions of sentient beings creates the world, and therefore all beings contribute to the creation of the world;

2. The cosmology of infinity buddha-fields of the Universal Way (mahayana), in which infinite world-systems come into being as phantom appearances, through bodhisattvas purifying buddha-fields, in which they may fulfill their heroic vows to liberate all beings. The universe is conceived as a cycle without commencement that repeats itself until all beings are liberated from the sufferings of cyclic existence;

3. The cosmology of the Tantra of the Wheel of Time (Kalacakra), which establishes a correspondence between the macrocosm and microcosm in terms of the formation of the universe and fetal development, and between the configuration of the universe and the shape and size of the human body;

4. The noncosmology of the Dzog-chen (Great Perfection) system, drawing extensively from Longchenpa, in which the primal creative cause of the universe is neither the evolutionary actions of beings nor the interrelationships of the compassion of the buddhas and sentient beings, but rigpa, a state of pure and total awareness, which is nothing other than the primordially pure ground of being itself. Failure to recognize the primordially pure nature of the ground of being is unawareness, which itself arises from intrinsic awareness. The primordial freedom that one seeks to attain by practicing the spiritual path is something that one already possesses. Intrinsic freedom is itself the path that leads to the actualization of the goal.

A Surprise

I'm a practicing Buddhist, and generally concerned with practical things. I bought this book, as I was drawn to it for some reason, and was expecting something interesting but maybe a bit abstract, as it is a book on cosmology. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it changed my view of life quite a bit, and since then, I haven't really had a small view of the world, or of mind.

I would highly recommend this book.

Book review of Myriad World

We all know that Buddha's teachings have many levels of understanding. It order to fully understand and fathom the teachings, one needs to be a Buddha. However, for a novice, a simple philosophy also exist - to help understand and then gradually move on the to difficult ones. In this book - Myriad World, the depth and many levels of Buddha's teachings are brought to light. Myriad World is an explanation of Buddhist cosmology. The author has used the interpretation of three different tradition to explain the cosmology. These traditions are : Sarvastivada (very similar with Theravada), Kalachakra (which is of a Vajrayana tradition) and the Dzogchen tradition. The author believes that these three explanations are not contradictory; instead they compliment each other - the explanation found in Kalachakra has a deeper meaning than that of Sarvastivada system, and the author concludes that Dzogchen interpretation is the final view. This book, hence, is a coming together of three great tradition.
Cosmology for many might not be an important/interesting subject to delve in. But in Buddhism, the subject is substantially significant; no wonder Abhidharma is full of it. Unless one knows were one stands, in the context of place, time and ones karma, one can never comprehend - what one is doing and the consequences of ones action. Therefore, understanding Cosmology contributes immensely in comprehending the true meaning of Buddhism. By all means, the subject must not be treated lightly.
Jamgon Kongtrol, the author of the book, was one of the most famous Buddhist personality of the 19th century Tibet. He was also one of the most prolific writer. Born in a Bonpo family, Control attended Nyingma monastery before moving on to Kagyu monastery, where he stayed and learned the most. This mix background perhaps, molded Control's thought, making him a non-sectarian. He has criticized, in plenty, the sectarian nature of many Buddhist monasteries and its monks. Always believing in a non-sectarian and synergetic approach, the book comes out to reflect this position. Despite considering the Dzogchen interpretation as the final, he never for ones disparages the other views.
After a short biography of the author and a short introductory chapter, the main subject of book is divided in three chapter; explaining in each the cosmological interpretation of Sarvastivada, Kalachakra and Dzogchen. The Sarvastivada interpretation of the cosmology is a popular one and can be understood by majority, with a slight background on Buddhism. However, the Kalachakra and Dzogchen interpretation are complex and takes lot of time and perhaps a guide to understand. Nevertheless, with simple and precise wording throughout, the book is very helpful, despite the difficulty of the subject. A beginner will definitely find it difficult to understand and enjoy the book. Nonetheless, an introductory chapter exist, where the book and the subject matter are explained in a simple manner - which should be helpful.
Translated under the auspices of the late venerable Kalu Rinpoche, the book aims to introduce and keep as much English word as possible, rather than use Sanskrit or Tibetan word. As a result, I encountered several English words used in this context. For example, 'Evolutionary Process' is the English translation for Karma. Instead of using Karma, the book uses 'Evolutionary Process' all the time. There are merits and demerits for using such word, however, in view of the growth and the easy understanding that the word might have, they are justified in using it.
I enjoyed reading the book and I would recommend to anyone interested in furthering their knowledge about Buddhism. I have no doubt that if one can read, especially the Kalachakra and Dzogchen part, more than once and understand the concept fully, this will contribute in more profound understanding of Buddhism.

The original Leaves from the Inn of the Last Home--first published back in 1987--was a must-have reference for Dragonlance fans, packed with supplementary material that included short stories, songs, and recipes. More Leaves delivers more of the same and even offers promising instructions for War of the Lance dishes like dragon-blasted steak and kender rolls. (Which, of course, kender rely on for "doughnutlike sweetness to give them indefatigable energy").

As with the first book, More Leaves both hits and misses, drawing from professional and a few not-quite-all-pro contributors: some of the kender taunts are nothing short of lame ("Wow! You smell so rotten a gully dwarf wouldn't give you a bath"), but detailed bios on each of Anasalon's dragon overlords, for example, will likely interest even nonfans. The bottom line is that any DL true believer really can't go wrong picking this up, if not for patented gnomish inventions and trés cool magic items, then for inspired treatises like "Slugs, fungi, molds, and other things I hope to never see again." --Paul Hughes

Composed for fans, by some fans.

This is a pretty good book similiar to two previous Dragonlance compilations (the original Leaves from the Inn of the Last Home, and The History of the Dragonlance saga). This book has contributions from Dragonlance fans who wanted to add their ideas about the Dragonlance world. If you're looking for something new you'll find it in here. Having the first two books makes this book a better buy.

GOOD, but not as much as the original!

MORE LEAVES FROM THE INN OF THE LAST HOME is an excellent compiliation of recipies, maps and short tales of both PRE 5th age and POST 5th age. Well worth the money spent, but it doesn't compare to it's precursor, Leaves from the Inn of the Last Home (which they REALLY should reprint). If you are a diehard Dragonlance fan, I don't see how you could be without this book. If you're a casual DL reader, you could probably get along with out it.

Like the other two books in this series, "More Leaves from the Inn of Last Home" is a wonderful and sparkling collection of impressions, pictures, stories, tales, poems and arts concerning the world of Dragonlance. Most likely, Dragonlancers will love these books. SCAdians may even like the material on Knightly Orders -- and their armor -- and other Medieval-like contents such as large-scale missile-weapons. Anyone may like the sheer variety of creativity.

These "scrapbooks" are very clever collections -- not using many game-specific stats. So, with these three "scrapbooks", edited by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman, you have a fairly full set of Dragonlance sourcebooks, with unique bonus extras, for Dragonlance and D&D to D20 related RPGs -- or even remotely related games +++

This is a true book-story about "Hey This is how i was able to achieve my goal and live life Under my terms, this is my own path.
