The Old Ways, by Robert Macfarlane

The Old Ways is the stunning fourth book by acclaimed nature writer Robert Macfarlane. Shortlisted for the Samuel Johnson prize 2012 Following the tracks, holloways, drove-roads and sea paths that form part of a vast ancient network of routes criss-crossing the British Isles and beyond, Robert Macfarlane discovers a lost world - a landscape of the feet and the mind, of pilgrimage and ritual, of stories and ghosts; above all of the places and journeys which inspire and inhabit our imaginations. 'Really do love it. He has a rare physical intelligence and affords total immersion in place, elements and the passage of time: wonderful' Antony Gormley 'A marvellous marriage of scholarship, imagination and evocation of place. I always feel exhilarated after reading Macfarlane' Penelope Lively 'Macfarlane immerses himself in regions we may have thought familiar, resurrecting them newly potent and sometimes beautifully strange. In a moving achievement, he returns our heritage to us' Colin Thubron 'Every Robert MacFarlane book offers beautiful writing, bold journeys . . . With its global reach and mysterious Sebaldian structure, this is MacFarlane's most important book yet' David Rothenberg, author of Survival of the Beautiful and Thousand Mile Song 'Luminous, possessing a seemingly paradoxical combination of the dream-like and the hyper-vigilant, The Old Ways is, as with all of Macfarlane's work, a magnificent read. Each sentence can carry astonishing discovery' Rick Bass, US novelist and nature writer 'The Old Ways confirms Robert Macfarlane's reputation as one of the most eloquent and observant of contemporary writers about nature' Scotland on Sunday 'Sublime writing . . . sets the imagination tingling . . . Macfarlane's way of writing [is] free, exploratory, rambling and haphazard but resourceful, individual, following his own whims, and laying an irresistible trail for readers to follow' Sunday Times 'Macfarlane relishes wild, as well as old, places. He writes about both beautifully . . . I love to read Macfarlane' John Sutherland, Financial Times 'Read this and it will be impossible to take an unremarkable walk again' Metro

From Booklist
A literature professor and prodigious perambulator, Macfarlane has walked in England, Scotland’s Isle of Lewis, and elsewhere and describes his experiences here. While descriptive observations of trails and vistas inform his presentation, Macfarlane’s animating idea is the construction of a meditative sensibility that involves imagining history, exulting in nature, and interpreting literature. Macfarlane confides that his inspiration for walking-writing is Edward Thomas, author of The Icknield Way (1913), a foot travelogue that Macfarlane’s loosely replicates, routewise; England’s southern hills, the chalk downs, are where Thomas ambled. Macfarlane’s contemporary peregrinations partake of a fine-grained feeling for the pathway, encounters with fellow itinerants, and the occasional ghost-haunted campsite. With a penchant for neologism and literary allusion, Macfarlane seeks out ancient footpaths across an Essex mudflat, on a section of the pilgrim’s way to Spain’s Santiago de Compostela, within a circumambulation of a Chinese mountain sacred to Buddhism, and sea routes around Lewis. Concluding with Thomas’ biography––he was killed in WWI––Macfarlane renders his feelings toward landscapes in ruminative, mysterious hues. --Gilbert Taylor

Review
''I don't give blurbs but I have to make an exception for Robert Macfarlane. He seems to know and have read everything, he steadily walks and climbs through places that most of us would shy away from and his every sentence rewrites the landscape in language crunchy and freshly minted and deeply textured. He never takes a short cut and he makes the long road seem like life itself. Surely the most accomplished (and erudite) writer on place to have come along in years.'' --Pico Iyer, acclaimed travel writer

''Macfarlane immerses himself in regions we may have thought familiar, resurrecting them newly potent and sometimes beautifully strange. In a moving achievement, he returns our heritage to us.'' --Colin Thubron, New York Times bestselling author

''I am a longstanding admirer of Robert Macfarlane's work, and I was enthralled by this new book -- again, a marvelous marriage of scholarship, imagination, and evocation of place. I read him for vicarious experience -- he takes me to places I can never visit, never could have visited. He creates for his readers landscapes in the mind, and the largesse of his references sends you off into all kinds of ancillary reading. I always feel exhilarated after reading Macfarlane.'' --Penelope Lively, prize-winning author

''A magnificent and beautiful book, the best Macfarlane has written. The Old Ways shows that landscape is more than a route to understanding; it actually is understanding, at least when known and felt in that material-ethereal way of which Macfarlane is the master.'' --Adam Nicolson, award-winning author

Walking, seeing, thinking, writing
By Interested Reader
This is a stunning book. The author walks, talks to people, but most of all sees deeply the natural history and human history of the places he walks. I was captivated by the intensity of his observations, the beauty of his writing, and the astonishing range of his knowledge (and vocabulary!). He sees and writes like a poet and a naturalist. He also makes friends with people who know the terrain and the history; people he meets along the way, but even more, people of knowledge and creativity themselves who are deeply tied to the landscapes he walks.

Another reviewer asked for maps. I read this book, in retrospect, in the best way possible. Reading it in the Kindle app on my iPad, I could easily look up the flowers and birds he sees, and the geological and local terms he uses. When he writes a lengthy meditation on the art of a painter of the British Downs, I could Google the artist and see examples of his art.

Best of all, by far, I used Google Earth to not only track his path but to see what he saw. When he describes a mountain in Tibet as having three intersecting ridges, I could move around a three dimensional image of the mountain, and also of the valley from which MacFarlane was looking. When he walked across a Scottish Isle, I could track his path around a lake, past a mountain, and across the heath. When he talked about the terraced hillsides outside Ramallah and the Israeli settlements, I could see those, too: the hills circled by ancient terracing, and the subdivision-like streets lined with identical houses and lots under construction.

I'm now going to buy the hardcover version, because this is a book to keep and to re-read. But I highly recommend reading it with the Internet, especially Google Earth, at hand.

The Old Ways: A Journey on Foot
By Joanne K.
I came across a review of this book and thought it sounded interesting.. It turned out to be fascinating. The language is beautiful, and the author convincingly draws the reader into his premise that a landscape's (and seascape's) past and present can be felt by a thoughtful and aware traveler who takes the time beforehand to learn about the territory to be covered, and is physically in touch with the land paths and sea lanes being travelled. This book truly exemplifies Oliver Wendell Holmes' quote that one's mind, once stretched by a new idea, never regains its original dimensions.

If you love nature and want to vicariously experience hiking around in wild places, this book is for you.
By DF
I bought The Old Ways (partly) mistakenly thinking it would be like one of my all-time favorites, The Old Straight Track, which I have read and reread many times. It turned out to be different, but rewarding in many more and different ways.

I had started reading this book from the library, but after reading another review, I realized how much richer an experience reading it could be if I got the Kindle edition and googled the flora, fauna, and geographical features along the way. So now I will read it that way--enlisting Google Earth at times, as well--even though I really prefer books made of paper to digital ones.

The writing is beautiful, wonderful powers of description, and some gripping stories and other information about the places where he walked. I can't forget the night he camped all alone in an ancient "circle" in Britain and had a blood-curdling experience of the sort that had (as he found out only later) sent a bunch of tough bikers fleeing the place in the middle of the night. Then there was also his experience of walking for hours across the tide-exposed sands to an island, where it could mean death to miss the path where the sand was firm or to still be out there when the next tide came in; and there were no longer any good markers on the path. I never even knew that sort of "road" existed. There are, apparently, also courses to follow in the sea that are like "roads." Altogether a great book, as is his The Wild Places. I have that one, too, and plan to get Mountains of the Mind as well.

Nice collection of anecdotes
By E. Northrop
I read Mr. Cash's second autobiography, Cash, before I read this one, but I still appreciated the additional anecdotes of the times that he lived and performed in, how he got his life on track, and how fervent he was about his Christianity. You can definitely hear that it is the same voice in both books, and they make a nice pair to read together.

I wish he'd delved into his courtship of June, but that's just me being nosy. All in all a nice read and another wonderful memento for his family.

I will never wear a suit of white...
By Adriana
This autobio is written in simple and straightforward language by the Man In Black himself. Our family has been fans of Cash long before the new Hollywood hit 'Walk the Line' hit cinemas last year. However, this new wave of Cash in the spotlight has reminded us all of his remarkable story. Johnny's simple faith allowed him to beat the 'demons' and live out the rest of His life in truth and always attributing Glory where it was due. June was his guardian angel, if you ask me. God definitely gave him a gift when he brought June into his life. His story is a touching one and will show you the power of prayer and godly people in one's life. An easy read and worth every second spend reading it. =)

AN EXCELLENT READ
By Mary Ellen
I've always been a fan of Johnny Cash and his music. After seeing "I Walk The Line" with Reese Witherspoon and Joaquin Phoenix, a real desire to "hear" from John himself came over me. I absolutely loved the movie but found to my surprise that no mention of Ray Cash (Johnny's father) mistreating his son was found in the book. And actually, there were only good things said about Ray.

John told with great clarity of the horror drug addiction brings on a person. It was so sad to read his words about the pain of withdrawal but how his life changed when he truly began living the Christian life, along with the help of June Carter and her family.

I heartily recommend this book to one and all.

Hard-Core Romance:

From its beginnings in Twilight fan-fiction to its record-breaking sales as an e-book and paperback, the story of the erotic romance novel Fifty Shades of Grey and its two sequels is both unusual and fascinating. Having sold over seventy million copies worldwide since 2011, E. L. James’s lurid series about a sexual ingénue and the powerful young entrepreneur who introduces her to BDSM sex has ingrained itself in our collective consciousness. But why have these particular novels—poorly written and formulaic as they are—become so popular, especially among women over thirty?

In this concise, engaging book, Eva Illouz subjects the Fifty Shades cultural phenomenon to the serious scrutiny it has been begging for. After placing the trilogy in the context of best-seller publishing, she delves into its remarkable appeal, seeking to understand the intense reading pleasure it provides and how that resonates with the structure of relationships between men and women today. Fifty Shades, Illouz argues, is a gothic romance adapted to modern times in which sexuality is both a source of division between men and women and a site to orchestrate their reconciliation. As for the novels’ notorious depictions of bondage, discipline, and sadomasochism, Illouz shows that these are as much a cultural fantasy as a sexual one, serving as a guide to a happier romantic life. The Fifty Shades trilogy merges romantic fantasy with self-help guide—two of the most popular genres for female readers.

Offering a provocative explanation for the success and popularity of the Fifty Shades of Grey novels, Hard-Core Romance is an insightful look at modern relationships and contemporary women’s literature.

Review
“Hard-Core Romance is a wonderfully creative piece of cultural analysis. Writing from a feminist-sociological perspective, Eva Illouz tells us how Fifty Shades of Grey became an international bestseller by providing fantasy resolutions to real-life female dilemmas, and self-help for the douleurs of contemporary heterosexuality. A most timely intervention.” (Laura Kipnis, author of How to Become a Scandal)

“A provocative text in its own right, Hard-Core Romance inventively employs the much-maligned Fifty Shades of a Grey to stage a philosophical and sociological conversation about relationship between fantasy, romance, sexuality, and popular literature.  In a modern era where competing desires for autonomy and attachment in sexual relationships are lived realities but seldom theorized, Illouz bravely takes on the novel’s controversial sexual practices, finding in them a meditation on the anxieties and compromises that characterize heterosexual intimacy. This generous and original reading offers the tantalizing prospect that it will unveil the uncertainties and indeterminacies that inhere in the heterosexual compact—a promise that Hard-Core Romance masterfully delivers.” (Suzanne Leonard, author of Fatal Attraction)

“[C]ompellingly audacious.” (Times Higher Education)

“[T]he first serious, book-length academic analysis of the Fifty Shades of Grey.” (The Millions)

“Illouz rightly tags the trilogy a species of self-help." (New Republic)

“A reasoned, thoughtful examination of gender relations, women’s desires, and the role of passion in contemporary society. . . . Vital and interesting.”
(Jessa Crispin Los Angeles Review of Books)

“A fantastic feminist reading of Fifty Shades of Grey offering publishing scholars and practitioners a profoundly troubling diagnosis for what truly makes a contemporary bestseller. Highly recommended.”

Review
Chilling in the extreme, The Lost Stradivarius is a classic tale of the supernatural from the author of Moonfleet.

Review

"Splendid edition of a key--if forgotten!--work."--David Gorman, Northern Illinois University

About the Author
J. Meade Falkner was an English writer and businessman. Educated at Oxford College, Falkner initially worked as a tutor to the children of Sir Andrew Noble, who ran one of the foremost arms manufacturers of the early twentieth century, Armstrong Whitworth Co. This association eventually led to Falkner s own interest in the company, of which he assumed control as chairman in 1915. Falkner s best known literary work is the novel Moonfleet, although he also penned two other novels and a number of works of non-fiction. Falkner died in 1932.

Timeless ghost story
By Jessica Salmonson (jessica@violetbooks.com)
The ghost story is by & large ideally realized as a short story or at most novella -- the greatest masters, such as M. R. James, never even attempted the novel form; & those who did both short stories and novels, such as E. F. Benson, only the short stories are of outstanding merit. At novel length they tend to bog down considerably or else descend into tedious gothicisms & inessential asides. But Falkner's THE LOST STRADIVARIUS is a perfect gem of a novel, a timeless tale of weird & awe inspiring ghostliness, easily in the top ten of Victorian ghost novels, in an unfailingly elegant style.

In excelsis, de profundis
By Jay Dickson
John Meade Falkner did not seem to consider novel-writing the most important thing in his life; he wrote three novels in a matter of less than ten years, and spend the rest of his life as an antiquarian, a librarian, and the top executive of a major munitions manufacturing firm. But the three Gothic novels he wrote are all one of a kind and were written with an incredible sense of surety and deftness. THE LOST STRADIVARIUS is a beautifully constructed ghost story, concerning a Victorian Oxford student and music aficionado who discovers an eighteenth-century Italian musical suite; when he plays a certain section of it with his friend in his rooms in Magdalen Hall, a presence seems to stir around them. This only starts the tale, which manages to synthesize a fantastic array of fin-de-siecle concerns, including homoeroticism (as Tom Paulin suggests in his brief foreword to this nice little Hesperus edition, the figure of Oscar Wilde surely haunts this work as much as the fictional ghost of Adrian Temple), decadence, anti-Catholicism, and Paterian aestheticism. The great pleasures of Falkner's fiction are his striking ability to convey atmosphere and his precocious gift for showing and not telling when it comes to character and suspense.

Outstanding read be prepared to use google to look up antiquated terms
By Fanclemente
Read this book in one afternoon sitting, really enthalled with story line. Imagine relatives and an adult friend telling you about the Father you never met. Hard to imagine this author only wrote 3 books for publication but given all of the other things he accomplished in his life it is understandable. Meant to excell at everything he set his hand and mind to accomplish and did so! You will have to work through turn of the century phrases and terms but then that is the case with any book from this era. In addition to everything else it was FREE! I am older (66) so might appreciate this more than younger generation but will meet all the desires of any avid reader.

This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

The Blue Hotel, by Stephen Crane

The Palace Hotel at Fort Romper was painted a light blue, a shade that is on the legs of a kind of heron, causing the bird to declare its position against any background. The Palace Hotel, then, was always screaming and howling in a way that made the dazzling winter landscape of Nebraska seem only a gray swampish hush. It stood alone on the prairie, and when the snow was falling the town two hundred yards away was not visible. But when the traveller alighted at the railway station he was obliged to pass the Palace Hotel before he could come upon the company of low clapboard houses which composed Fort Romper, and it was not to be thought that any traveller could pass the Palace Hotel without looking at it. Pat Scully, the proprietor, had proved himself a master of strategy when he chose his paints. It is true that on clear days, when the great trans-continental expresses, long lines of swaying Pullmans, swept through Fort Romper, passengers were overcome at the sight, and the cult that knows the brown-reds and the subdivisions of the dark greens of the East expressed shame, pity, horror, in a laugh. But to the citizens of this prairie town and to the people who would naturally stop there, Pat Scully had performed a feat. With this opulence and splendor, these creeds, classes, egotisms, that streamed through Romper on the rails day after day, they had no color in common.

Review
Short story by Stephen Crane, published serially in Collier's Weekly (Nov. 26-Dec. 3, 1898), and then in the collection The Monster and Other Stories (1899). Combining symbolic imagery with naturalistic detail, it is an existential tale about human vanities and delusions. As the story opens, three visitors find shelter from a blizzard at Pat Scully's hotel in Fort Romper, Neb.: a nervous New Yorker known as the Swede, a rambunctious Westerner named Bill, and a reserved Easterner called Mr. Blanc. The Swede becomes increasingly drunk, defensive, and reckless. He beats Scully's son, Johnnie, in a fight after accusing him of cheating at cards. When the Swede accosts a patron of a bar, he is stabbed and killed. The story ends ambiguously at a point several months later, when timid Mr. Blanc confesses to Bill that he feels somewhat responsible for the Swede's death because he failed to act when he saw that Johnnie was indeed cheating at cards. -- The Merriam-Webster Encylopedia of Literature

About the Author
American author Stephen Crane began writing early in life, and was already a published author by the age of sixteen. Among Crane s best known works are Maggie: A Girl of the Streets, which is considered to be the first literary work in the early American tradition of Naturalism, a literary movement marked by detailed realism and the acknowledgement of social conditions of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and The Red Badge of Courage, which was influenced by his own experiences in military school and personal contact with Civil-War veterans. Crane died in 1900 at the age twenty-eight of tuberculosis, but had a significant and lasting impact on twentieth-century literature, influencing early modernist writers such as Ernest Hemingway.

The Way It Is
By Mr. D. James
Crane, Stephen. The Blue Hotel

Stephen Crane’s long short story is a much anthologised item, it being typical of his masculine focussed social Darwinism, or survival of the fittest philosophy. Here, a character known simply as The Swede is the focus of the five major players in the story, set in an isolated settlement in The Blue Hotel in Fort Romper, Nebraska. Life is tough in winter in Romper and a man needs all his wits, and probably a handy weapon, simply to survive. The Swede is nervous to the point of hysteria. Pat Scully, the hotel keeper, his son Johnnie, the Easterner and the cowboy are shocked by the Swede’s insistent nervous laughter and his compulsive fear of being murdered. While Scully is out meeting any likely customers from the train, and over a card game, the Swede accuses Johnnie of cheating, which leads to a challenge and a fight outside in the blizzard.

‘Kill him, Johnnie! Kill him!, shouts the cowboy, as the contestants grapple, until finally Johnnie falls. But encouraged by his father he continues, until overpowered at last by the heavier man, and left to ‘the mixture of sympathy and abuse’ of the women. The Swede leaves in triumph for another bar, where he boasts about what he’d done to Scully’s son, but his unwilling audience shun him and his bravado, declining his offer of a drink together. This infuriates the drunken Swede, who threatens a gambler and in a struggle is pierced by a long knife. This ‘citadel of virtue, of virtue, wisdom, power, was pierced as easily as if it had been a melon,’ we are told, and its innocent murderer is, we learn in the final section given the lenient sentence of three years in jail.

There is no moral to the story. Given the setting and the characters it’s a sequence of likely events. Neither the demon drink nor the violence in nature is to blame. Anger, fear, jealousy and the need to impose on others are inescapable. That’s just the way it is.

Good read when flying
By Reader02
Starting to go back and read some of the "masters" to increase my depth and knowledge of writing styles. Short story with an interesting plot line of paranoia and self fulling prophecy at the end. Highly recommend for a quick read on a flight on an hour or more.
