As its title suggests, "Solo Piano Music Collection, Vol. 1" is Michael Logozar's first sheet music collection. The book consists of five pieces from Michael's 2012 CD, "Time," and six from his 2008 debut, "Coming Into View." The collection is available as either a beautiful spiral-bound book or a download. The scores are printed on a heavier stock than a standard bond paper, but it isn't so heavy that it makes page turns difficult. The notation is clear, crisp, and well-spaced. Dynamics, pedal indications, and metronome settings are all included. Only a few places have a reach of more than an octave, so pianists with average-sized hands will have no problems. Most of the timing is relatively straight-forward and only one piece has a key signature that I would consider tricky (Gb, which includes Cb). None of the pieces are overly difficult, and pianists at an upper-intermediate and early-advanced level (or higher, obviously!) should have no problem mastering this music. "Time" was one of my favorite albums for 2012, so I really enjoy playing this book! Recommended!

An Entertaining Read

My brother brought this home from school. He said he hated it. I read it and loved it. Some of her theories are a little far-out, but most of what she says makes sense. Her major point is "The personal is political, the personal is international." Enloe makes some amazing and original connections between institutions and policies that are considered inherent and gender roles. Don't limit this to the text book category.

Sexploitation vs. just plain old exploitation

I can't call myself a feminist. That would be quite ridiculous. But I have never been one to disparage the motivations of the movement in general. Women have been suppressed and oppressed and still are, for the most part. Their male oppressors still want to tell them what they can or cannot do with their bodies, hence with their very lives. That's the bottom line. I didn't really ever do any deep reading in the voluminous literature on feminism, women's rights, etc. I didn't think that I was clever for having avoided it, I just didn't have time or (I admit) burning curiosity. So, when I saw BANANAS, BEACHES and BASES on a bookstore shelf some years ago, I bought it, thinking that the subtitle, "Making Feminist Sense of International Politics" brought together two topics about which I could learn more. I finally read it recently, but must give it a very mixed review.
The author picks some very interesting issues. Tourism for one---a global business that touches nearly every corner of the earth and has created as many problems as it has solved. Mass, commercial tourism can be compared with plantation agriculture or clear-cut logging in terms of the amount of damage it does to human lives and the environment. Enloe brings this out very aptly. Military bases, plantation agriculture (for instance, of bananas), the need for cheap but fashionable, ready-to-wear clothes, and the high demand for domestic servants all fall under her discerning eye. Nobody can argue with her general positions on these subjects or on lesser topics such as `diplomatic wives' and their ambiguous position in the foreign services of the world. However---and this is a big however---I do disagree with her overall presentation. Sentences like "Yet nationalist movements have rarely taken women's experiences as the starting point for an understanding of how a people becomes colonized or how it throws off the shackles...." appalled me. Why just women ? Haven't the men been exploited, albeit in different ways ? Is not the entire country affected ? Prostitution exploits women, we are reminded. There is a vast number of male and child prostitutes too, just as exploited. Domestic violence may assist base commanders, but this is very far from being what is centrally dangerous and exploitative about bases. Such simplistic examples are legion in this book.
I think the basic fault of BB & B is to separate the fate of women from that of men or rather, from the fate of all victims of imperialism, oppression, and exploitation. If Enloe's aim was merely to show how women have been severely oppressed in X numbers of ways, that would be fine. But it is a reductionist argument to claim that women should be the focus for anti-exploitative actions, that women are central to the solutions. As women are half the human race, it is OBVIOUS that they cannot be excluded. Men have controlled and do control women, but international politics cannot be interpreted as a system for controlling women ! It is a system of power and anything and everything will be controlled if it can be. Feminism, as an attack on the way the world is presently constructed, is strong. Gender, as an ideological mode or framework, is weak, just as race, class, religion or language would be. Male/female, light/dark, yin/yang---these are eternal principles that cannot be ignored. ANY solution which leaves out a part, is no solution. If that were the only message Enloe put out, I would have no quarrel with her. As it is, I do.

Interesting Read, but Overwhelmingly Feminist at Times

Enloe's book is fascinating and I enjoyed reading it. Unlike some other feminist authors, she uses concrete examples based in reality and includes entertaining (and relevant) vignettes. A few times, she ventures a bit too far into the vast abyss of hyper-feminism (one example: drawing direct parallels between the shape of bananas and the phallus in light of banana plantations that indeed did exploit and discriminate against women). Overall, though, Enloe is down to earth and blends minimal amounts of theory with reality. I would recommend the book to others.

Great Book for Tool Designers

Having been in Manufacturing for over 28 years, I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in Tool Design. I recently picked up this book for a Tool Design course at UCLA Ext and this is required reading for the course. Too bad I couldn't have picked up this book years ago. It has great fundamental information for any level.

Very Thorough and Concise in Tool Design Concepts

I needed this book for school and the teacher constantly referenced it, unlike in other classes where it's pretty much a "throwaway" book requirement. The teacher used this as his guide and he's been teaching Tool and Die for over 20 years, and has been in the business for over 35 years.

Wonderful Series!!

I just finished reading the third book in this series and loved it. The dynamics and chemistry between Anna and Finn was very hot. They first met when she arrived for a family vacation, he took her by surprise while she was photographing sighs on her way to meet her mother. Anna never suspected that he was the son of the man who her mother was living with, still there was something about him that drew her to him and he to her. They eventually begin a secret relationship because of their parents. They are getting closer every day, and she is the only one that he has really opened up to, she gets to see the real Finn. One day everything blows up and the sons and daughters of John and Robin leave to live their own lives. In this reviewers opinion this is a must read book. I also recommend the first two in this series. I never tell spoilers, as that ruins the book for others who haven't read it yet. I wish there was another book in this series. I am going to miss them and what happens next. If I could give it more than five stars I would, to me it is a ten star book. Ms.Master always delivers when she writes.

Great Chemistry

Finn and Annabel had great chemistry. I think of all the Hawthorne brother books this one was by far my favorite. I loved the fact that Anna and Finn decided to not play games and be honest with each other right from the start. I also liked the interactions with the other siblings and getting all sides of the "vacation". I wish the ending would have looked a little further into the future. It kept my attention and I didn't want to put it down.
Colleen, I loved this series but I must say that I am so curious as to what happens with these three couples. Do they all get married? Do they all have kids? Can we get a novella with a look into their future??
I highly recommend that everyone read about the Hawthorne boys. I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Unhappy family reunion

Annabel meets Finn when her mother insists that she and her sisters visit her in Montana. Finn is the son of the man her mother has been staying with, and Anna can't resist him. Anna and her sisters are devestated when her mother tells them she is selling the house they grew up in, and they leave Montana. Anna leaves with Finn and finds herself living with him in Portland. They haven't heard the last from their parents, and soon have news they never wanted to hear. Sizzling hot conclusion to a fantastic series, I loved these books!
