The first sinner was not a human being, but an evil god called Horon who wanted to depose El. Horon was thrown down from the mountain of the gods, and in revenge he transformed the Tree of Life in the garden into a Tree of Death and enveloped the whole world in a poisonous fog. Adam was sent down to restore life on earth, but failed because Horon in the form of a huge serpent bit him. As a result Adam and his wife lost their immortality. This myth found its way into the Bible, the Apocrypha and the Pseudepigraphical literature, though it was often transformed or treated critically. Adam, Eve, and the Devil traces the reception of the myth in its many forms, and also presents the oldest pictures of Adam and Eve ever identified (one of them on the front cover of the book).

A Good Reference But Not A Primer

This book would be a good addition to your library, but if you are just learning DMX don't look at it as your first book. Start your learning process with a good book on MDX fundamentals, if in fact one exists, then use this book as an excellent means of polishing your knowledge. There is much to be learned, but only if you have a good grasp of the elementary fundamentals of DMX. If DMX is to be your specialty, this book belongs in your library.

About the Author

Richard Daniel Barton

Rick is a freelance consultant who has specialized in data integration and ETL for the last 13 years, as part of an IT career spanning over 25 years. After gaining a degree in Computer Systems from Cardiff University Rick began his career as a firmware programmer before moving into Mainframe data processing and then into ETL tools in 1999.

He has provided technical consultancy to some of the UK's largest companies, including banks and telecommunications companies, and was a founding partner of a “Big Data” integration consultancy.

Four years ago he moved back into freelance development and has been working almost exclusively with Talend Open Studio and Talend Integration Suite, on multiple projects, of various sizes, in UK. It is on these projects that he has learned many of the lessons that can be found in this, his first book.

Very comprehensive and useful recipes collection for Talend Open Studio

As an almost daily professional users of Talend Open Studio, I have read the more than 100 recipes in this book.

For all who are novice to Talend Open Studio, I can recommend the book highly . Especially if you like to learn by examples. I think if you have worked through all the recipes in this book, you can implement maintainable and fully functional data integration jobs.

For those who already know Talend Open Studio, I can recommend this book as well, as it will give you deeper insights into the functionality. It answers questions like - how can you make something easier. I found myself reading about functions that unknown or hidden to me until know.

Prerequisites for the book or for certain chapters are Java knowledge and understanding of XML. Above all, basic knowledge of data integration will help following the recipes. The book will not help beginners of data integration and it is no introduction into the basic concepts of Talend Open Studio / Data Integration. And sure, the book is also not for absolute beginners of programming.

The book invited me to think. It is without unnecessary words. The recipe are explained in an efficient and clear way.

Will make running with Talend in minmum time

As an ETL practitioner I can also see the rise in OSS use, ETL use in general, but no significant changes in how ETL is done or its tooling.

In short, getting this book for free for review from Packt was an awesome deal, big thank you to their awesome team, I enjoyed reading this book from cover to cover.

As a side note, I am a big believer in cookbooks (or in other words quick recipes). These are the books that you can read and re-read, and then keep at your desk at work. I am sure I will revisit it.

Another note is this book is good to read even to those developers who do not use Talend, even SSIS folks will benefit from thoughtful advices given by Rick as the principals described in the book apply to about any ETL process.

OK, now more about the book: my $0.02 whether you use Talend or Informatica – you have to know Java. It is simply because you will not be efficient enough or will not complete an assignment. The book uses quite a bit of Java code.

But do not be intimidated, the book has a relatively low entry barrier.

Even better, the book in my view has a complete coverage letting an ETL developer to properly tackle any given task. Specifically, it walks you thru from designing a simple job to troubleshooting common issues and also covers best approaches.

The book has a short task scenario overview with a fully outlined solution steps as it should be in any cookbook!

It even has common pitfalls resolutions covered for you so the author made sure you are not going to stuck with the IDE designing ETL with Talend.

Also, all the new and web technologies are covered as working with REST and SOAP, XML and so forth.

To sum up, this book receives 5+ out of 5 from me (a very demanding person).

Thank you Rick for putting so much effort in wiring a comprehensive book with so much accompanying code.

Much needed manual for the Talend Integration marketplace!

Well, I'm half way through the book and I want to stop and let you know that my efficiency is on the way up!

There is much to like about this training manual:
* Lots of day-to-day integration work is covered - just take the time to look at the table of contents!
* Most processes are shown that they can be accomplished in multiple ways, depending on requirements or style.
* There are not lots of pictures, but the recipes are step by step, so you don't need lots of pictures and you get more meat!
* There are references throughout the recipes to other parts of the book, so you wont get lost if you want to dive in anywhere to get quick answers to your specific problems.
* The book's layout is familiar, if you have been using Talend's own reference materials.
* The book comes with data, so you are using prepared material and not wasting time having to create your own.
* There are lots of hints and warnings. You will quickly see that much thought went into each exercise.
* If you know a little programming, but are not greatly familiar with Java, this book will prove to be very useful to you; not getting too deep, it provides just enough to get you thinking how to accomplish things you didn't know how to do at first.
* There is a strong emphasis on time-saving methods, like fully using the repository for schemas and queries, etc.
* I have seen very few, if any, typos. Lots of polish went on to get things right.

I am very please with this helpful book, and there is a great need for works like this as I look at the forums and see many of the same questions that keep coming up which are answered here.

This book will save me lots of time hunting down answers as new challenges arise! I think you will be very please to own this manual.
