About the Author

ICHIBA ASHIDA is the Headmaster of the Enshu Seifu School of Ikebana, formerly known as the Enshu School. Born in Tokyo in 1938, he learned the Enshu style of ikebana from his grandfather. In 1967 he became the Kyoto-based school's 14th headmaster.
The Enshu School has one of the oldest ikebana lineages, dating from its founding in the 17th century by Kobori Enshu (1579-1647), a government official in the first three Tokugawa shogunates who made his name as a tea master, pottery connoisseur, and garden designer and architect associated with such landmarks as the Nijo Castle and Katsura Detached Palace in Kyoto. Enshu is best known for its classical shoka style, in which mature branches are painstakingly shaped into graceful curves by cutting small notches into the branches and inserting wedges of wood. Since becoming headmaster, Ashida has broadened the schools' curriculum by developing unique variations of other traditional ikebana forms. He has also created a totally new form of ikebana using cut flowers and potted plants, Ikebana with Living Plants, which is introduced in this volume.

Beautification for your house plants

Ikebana with Living Plants provides great ideas on how to increase appreciation for those house plants you're sheltering for the winter. As a well-organized visual design book, it favors a brief pictorial approach over prose descriptions laden with unfamiliar vocabulary. Those of us who are all thumbs can bloom in our own right, including the guys among us who are proudly ignorant of flower arranging. Ikebana allows us to choose among this week's grocery store flowers -- the simple ones, not just the roses -- and impress house guests with style. Those willing to visit the florist will earn serious respect.

For those that care, ikebana is the Japanese art of flower arranging, anciently practiced by samurai in their off hours from swordsmanship drills and zen meditation. Samurai were apparently not drilled in marketing. So while the book is packed with good visual ideas, it does not include a glowing, self-promotional prose section that makes the reader feel privileged to participate in an uncommon set of ideas.

Those with an interest in terrarium design may also find these ideas valuable. And they can be adapted to mixing potted plants among bedded plants when all that greenery gets planted out in the spring.

I rated this book both as a cookbook and as a reference book. Even though you won't sit and read Ikebana cover to cover, you can count on it as worthwhile for a couple of dozen good ideas. It provides at least enough to get you through an entire winter. The lack of self-promotional prose means it's probably not the best gift for those who haven't expressed an interest in the topic. But the rest of us will understand that Ikebana adds respectable cultural well-roundedness to our swordsmanship.

This is a different & interesting approach to Ikebana following the French tradition of pot-et-fleur combined with Japanese aesthetics. The author gives a concise but comprehensive outline on principles followed by lots of illustrated arrangements which gives inspiration & ideas to creating your own combinations.

It marries a love for flowers with that of green potted plants so one can have the best of both worlds!

An easy, uncomplicated read providing good input and worksheets for developing job descriptions. Does not cover in very much depth the physical demands and working conditions piece, which I was looking for. I work in an industry that employs a large variety of positions, indoors and outdoors, desk jobs and physically laborious jobs, and in various weather conditions, and we'd like to address physical demands for ADA purposes. This book seems more appropriate for companies whose jobs don't have such a variety of conditions. I did like, however, the simplicity in which it covered the other aspects of job descriptions.

Awesome Overview of Shadow Techniques. Very Approachable Language. Not Much Code, But That's OK.

Shadow Algorithms Data Miner by Andrew Woo was an interesting find for me. The oddly titled book was released over 2 years ago, yet there wasn't a single review on Amazon (where I purchased the e-book). However, I read the table of contents and it seemed pretty extensive in it's coverage of computer graphic shadow techniques. So I decided to take a chance and purchase the item. I am glad I did.

Prior to vacationing in Japan, I started reading the book and managed to finish it before the plane ride back. It was only about 200 pages long, somewhat short for a technical text, but Woo managed to fit a lot in there. He speaks about planar shadows, shadow depth maps, shadow volumes, ray tracing, hard and soft shadows, filtering techniques, and more. While it certainly was not exhaustive, I don't think that was Andrew Woo's intention with this title. It is much more of a broad overview, with ample references to relevant papers and topics to research further on your own. With that in mind, there is almost zero code or pseudo-code contained in these pages. He just explains the general concepts of how the algorithm functions, and it is up to you to implement after further research.

For any readers using Kindle tablets, you will be in for a treat. The Kindle e-book is formatted exactly like the hard-cover, and happens to be about the same aspect ratio as the Fire HDX. This means it looks basically like a real book, everything is formatted perfectly (a major issue with technical e-books), and you don't have to zoom or pan around. The disadvantage is that you cannot change the font size or background color like you can with most Kindle titles. A fair price to pay for a more streamline experience.

Overall I was impressed with Shadow Algorithms Data Miner and would recommend the book to anyone wanting to learn about computer graphic shadow techniques. Keep in mind the book is highly approachable, but it may be a tad simple for advanced users. If you already have a good understanding of how different shadow algorithms work, you probably won't find any gems here. On the other hand, if you are starting out this book can be invaluable. It has my seal of approval.

In September 2004, Ukrainian presidential candidate Viktor Yushchenko was poisoned by dioxin, which caused severe illness and disfigurement. In October 2006, journalist Anna Politkovskaya, a critic of President Vladimir Putin and his handling of the Chechen conflict, was shot to death in Moscow. In November 2006, former KGB officer Alexander Litvinenko was poisoned by polonium-210 and died after several days of agony. Litvinenko was known for publicly alleging that the Russian government was behind numerous acts of terrorism against its own people, including Politkovskaya's murder. These stories are familiar to most who follow international news. What many people do not know is that this type of assassination has a long history extending through Soviet regimes as far back as Lenin. Pretentious & Vacuous

"Groundbreaking study" - "Full Details of Litvinentko Murder" - "Nothing of this sort has ever been published." These adulatory blurbs are not citations from actual book reviews. In fact they are so out of line with the reality of the book that I suspect they were written by the author. I would also bet that Zenith is a well-disguised vanity press. The book imitates the dramatic style of startling revelations by genuine investigative journalism, but does not offer substantive new information on the Litvinenko murder or the murderous history of the KGB. What you will find is a massive jumble of details presented with no effort by the author to select or distinguish what is relevant from what is irrelevant. Insight? There isn't any. Regarding Litvinenko in particular, nothing new is offered in the book that wasn't already stated in Volodarsky's article published the day after Litvinenko's death, in the St. Petersburg Times on 11/24/06. I confess to not providing an illustration in this review of the book's alleged faults, because it would be exceedingly laborious to quote and analyze sample globs of text. There is nothing to be gained from it, e.g. separating the wheat from the chaff, because it seems all chaff. I wrote this short-cut review to save others from buying the book based on the blurbs. Alas, I naively took them seriously, but the punch-line is that no one seems to be buying the book anyway. P.S. The other review was written by the author after being offended by mine. I doubt that he will confess.

Diferential diagnosis for dissidents and defectors

This book is a must read for everyone who does not believe in accidental deaths of high-profile enemies of the Russian state, and wants to become more familiar with characteristic signature of KGB murders by poisoning. All presented cases were killings committed by the KGB (or FSB) on direct order of the president. The book presents in detail some of the most ill-famous KGB poisonings abroad.

All cases presented in this book provide detailed description of methods used by the perpetrators to mask the symptoms and make the murder look like natural death. As pointed out, the best murder looks like a heart attack.

Special attention is paid to the two known cases of poisoning by custom-made KGB radioactive weapon in people who lived long enough to tell the tale: the fatal case of polonium 210 poisoning as used in the case of Alexander Litvinenko in October/November 2006, and thallium poisoning as used for Nikolai Khokhlov in September 1957. Khokhlov was a trained assassin and turned himself in when he was sent to kill Russian émigré G.S. Okolovich in Frankfurt am Main in 1943. His next operation was conducted under direct supervision of the FBI.

What is interesting about the Khokhlov case is the way he was trained back in the POW camp in order to get a new identity of a fellow prisoner (page 165). In 1957, when Khokhlov got ill with an unknown condition, his life was saved by U.S. Army medical facility which correctly identified the cause as thallium poisoning. This can be compared to the confusion and apparent inability to establish correct diagnosis by British doctors in 2006 in the Litvinenko's case. This time, the Americans did not get involved, as this murder did not formally belong to the jurisdiction of the USA, and Litvinenko never worked for them. Litvinenko's key work includes book "Blowing Up Russia", which documents how FSB is responsible for the series of bombings of the apartment buildings, rather than the Chechen terrorists. Litvinenko's death came just a few weeks after the murder of Anna Politkovskaya. Her poisoning on the flight to Chechnya during the Beslan crisis is briefly discussed as part of the Litvinenko case.

Dioxin used in the poisoning of Ukrainian presidential candidate Victor Yushchenko in September 2004 was a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge as well. Should he stayed in Ukrainian hospital Feofania, his chances of survival would be very slim, because doctors were practically barred from attending the sick man, and those who still attempted to help, were either threatened or fired from their jobs (page 102). Chervonenko, Alexander Tretyakov, and Yushchenko's American-born wife made a quick and sound decision to fly Yushchenko to a private hospital in Vienna, Austria. At that time, the most prominent symptoms were acute pancreatitis, severe inflammation and ulceration of gastrointestinal tract, and atypical skin disease. Doctor Nikolai Korpan, who first came with the theory that his patient was poisoned, had to face tough questioning and his immigration status and professional credentials were seriously challenged. He was right, and the toxicological analysis fully confirmed dioxin poisoning. State Department refused to get involved.

In May 1962, 24-year-old Lt Lapusnyik defected from Hungary to Austria and turned himself in to the Austrian police. He was placed in detention for questioning, and described loopholes in Iron Curtain and provided valuable information about the functioning of the Hungarian Ministry of Interior. In June 1962, he died of a brain hemorrhage. The author's estimate is that the substance to blame was DMS (dimethyl-sulphate). Austrian authorities decided to turn blind eye to this obvious murder. At that time, Austrian security forces were heavily penetrated by Russian and their satellites' agents; and the total number of intelligence officers (declared) in Vienna and Salzburg outnumbered US and UK stations combined.

The death of Soviet Naval officer Nikolai Artamonov (Shadrin/Lark) in 1975 was an accident, as the chloroform used to stuff him in the KGB car was not meant to kill him. He was supposed to be brought to Moscow for questioning. Lark was smuggled over Czech border through one of the loopholes described by Lapusnyik, and died of asphyxiation. This case is interesting for two reasons - the substitute of Colonel Kuryshev 1 who disappeared with Lark over the Czech border, and Kuryshev 2, who continued to serve in Vienna (in other words, identity fraud). Artmanov was closely working with the KGB under American control, and was disposed off on neutral territory.

Another interesting case presented here is assassin Bogdan Stashinsky, who was recruited by the KGB after he got caught on train without a ticket. In 1957, he was ordered to kill Rebet for his work "The Theory of Nations" by poisonous gas (cyanide) shot straight in the victim's face. Three days later, he killed exactly the same way Ukrainian nationalist leader Stephan Bandera. There is an interesting paragraph about kill conditioning on page 185. Stashinsky was tried in court for his crimes, got 8 years, and was resettled in a third country. On Oct 19, 1962, the High Court judge ruled that the Soviet government in Moscow was guilty of all political assassinations. It would be great if this much attention was paid to resettlement of victims.

In Russia, assassinations are still a way how to dispose of politically undesirable émigrés and defectors. The book is not an easy read, but it is worth the time. It is thoroughly researched and backed up by solid evidence.

Interesting book - recommended for espionage afacionados

A good read. Although due to its somewhat "choppy" style, I would recommend it for well-read espionage aficionados - who already know the basic structure of the KGB/FSB, etc. I particularly liked the summary of Putin's ascent to power starting in St Petersburg (toward the back of the book). I also appreciated the chapters on Khokhlov - a fascinating case, altho apparently Brooke-Shepherd's work attributes more to K. - Volodarsky likens him to a mere assistant. I look foward to the author's next work.

Fascinating!

As a father, grandfather, and former pediatrician, I have observed many children acquire a language. However, only recently did I become deeply curious about this mysterious process. This book proved to be exactly what I needed. The presentation is orderly, well-written, and very readable. The process of language acquisition is analysed and described clearly. The clever methods of researchers in this field are made understandable and fascinating. The mysteries remaining to be explained are presented frankly. This is a book that both parents and professionals can read for both pleasure and enlightenment.

Very good summary of current knowledge, clearly presented

This book, written by a linguist at the University of Hawaii, is a good introduction to current academic thinking on children's first-language acquisition. It is not intended as a guide for parents, per se, but is usable for parents interested in this aspect of their children's development (there are occasional interjections to the effect "not to worry"). It's written in a very clear style with a very logical arrangement, without jargon drawn from linguistics. The discussion is limited almost entirely to an English monolingual environment, and does not go beyond early childhood and the acquisition of the local basic grammar and vocabulary.

The author starts by examining how children learn the meaning of words in isolation and how sentence structure and other elements of grammar appear to be acquired. Only in the second part does he explore phonology; with good grounds for the general reader, as this involves considerably greater abstraction. Thereupon some sociolinguistics appear, in the context of differing parental behaviors. Finally, the author discusses abstract models of human language as they bear on language learning; is the language learning facility a separate brain function, unto itself, or is it just an extension of other parts of human mental equipment? All of this is discussed in the clearest and most concrete terms.

Brief appendices include the International Phonetic Alphabet as it is used in the book and some tips for keeping diary-style records of a child's languistic behavior and progression. In this context I might mention that the single "how to/how not to" element occurs in the author's discussion of "re-casting"; does adult repetion of children's statements, in standard grammatical format, correcting deviations from local norms, help children acquire these norms? The answer appears to be "no".

A minor quibble: when referring to children by pronouns, the author randomly switches between "he" and "she" when sex is not at issue. When parents are referred to, the author inevitably uses the word "mother", in which case sex could conceivably be an issue in terms of linguistic usage or other behaviors. It would have been clearer in my opinion if the author had followed what is current colloquial English usage and said "they, them" etc. If parents are meant, say "parents". But this sort of thing is common in writing in academia, even when the audience consists of non-academics, as in this case.
