Minnesotas Boundary with Canada: Its Evolution Since 1783 (Publications - Minnesota Historical Society, Public Affairs Center), by William

The boundary between the U.S. and Canada is far more than a line on a map or a demarcation on the ground. In a broad sense, it represents the aspirations, successes, frustrations, failures, and compromises of the two largest countries on the North American continent. Behind this unfortified boundary lie the negotiations, surveys, and intrigue leading to the final establishment of this international border that had its beginnings in the eighteenth century.

Degrees of separation
By Bomojaz
Once having lived close to the Mason-Dixon Line whose markers (some of them) I've traced and visited, I find surveying and marking boundaries, whether it's surveying a property line prior to erecting a fence to international boundary disputes such as the one waged between Canada and the US (and discussed brilliantly in this study) to be fascinating subjects. It took many years and a number of major conferences and treaties before the line separating Canada and the US was established. While concentrating particularly, though not exclusively, on the boundary line along Minnesota's border, William Lass has written a fascinating history of America's northern boundary.

Lass begins with the agreement made in the Treaty of Paris in 1783, which brought the American Revolution to its conclusion. Additional treaties were signed all the way up to 1846, each one amending previous agreements. The most interesting account might be the chapter on the Lake of the Woods and the formation the Angle Inlet as American property, which came about through a lack of information regarding the head of the Mississippi River at the time. The western boundary of the US prior to the Louisiana Purchase was assumed to be the Mississippi River, which was thought to extend up to Lake of the Woods. Thus the most NW point of the lake was marked as the corner of US territory. But when it was learned that the river began much farther south, the 49th parallel became the agreed upon boundary line and a line was simply drawn south from the NW point to the line. Thus the town of Angle Inlet is only one of two communities in the contiguous United States (Point Roberts, WA is the other) that in order to reach by land one must travel through a foreign country. Another most intriguing chapter is the one regarding the final remonumenting of the line during the early 1900s. Lass's history is scholarly and thorough, but not dull. Numerous maps and photos grace the text. Anyone interested in the history of the US's northern boundary in general, or Minnesota's in particular, will find much to savor in this oversized, double-columned book. Highly recommended.

The Lucifer Contract (Civil War Thriller), by Maan Meyers

From the acclaimed author of The Dutchman and The House on Mulberry Street comes another darkly thrilling mystery rooted in New York's historic past.

In November 1864, Manhattan mirrors the tumult of the Civil War.  Bowery toughs rub shoulders with fashionable theatergoers, crippled veterans beg on the streets, and runaway slaves huddle in Underground Railroad safe houses.  Last year's Draft Riots tore the city apart; many fear another uprising on Election Day.

But a far greater threat hangs, unseen, over New York.  Eight men from Kentucky--one barely old enough to shave--have signed a Confederate blood pact.  Its code name is Lucifer; its mission is to burn this Yankee town to the ground.  Already, one of the men, cutting a Union spy's throat, has left a Lucifer matchstick clenched between the unfortunate's teeth.

Infiltrating the city, the conspirators draw into their orbit many an unsuspecting citizen--plus a handful who glimpse something amiss.  One of these is Pete Tonneman, who can't resist a glass of whiskey or a good story.  When barmaid Meg Clancy reports an overheard conversation, Pete finds himself on the scent of a rumored plot and a string of seemingly random corpses--each dispatched with a slashed throat and marked with a matchstick between the teeth.  It is a trail that forks often, and dangerously, for Pete and his informants, such as stagestruck Meg, who mingles with theater folk, including the notorious rake John Wilkes Booth; flamboyant, Madonna-faced prostitute Claudia Albert; and Patrick Duff, the Union veteran who will cross paths again with the Rebel devil who half blinded him in battle.  Spurred by General Sherman's burning of Atlanta, the Lucifer plot moves relentlessly toward its target.  And joining his Tonneman relatives' police expertise with his own journalist's savvy, Pete must pick apart the tangle of politics and greed, firebrand insanity and cold-blooded butchery, that sweeps the city toward an unimaginable inferno.

Stamped with Maan Meyers's vivid authenticity and novelistic flair, The Lucifer Contract is an unforgettable work of history and intrigue, romance, vengeance, and murder.

From Kirkus Reviews
A sixth chapter in the Tonneman family history (The House on Mulberry Street, 1996, etc.), set this time in 1864, toward the end of the Civil War. It's nearing Election Day in New York City, and Police Chief Hays Tonneman, along with Mayor Gunther and Army General Dix, has been alerted to a Rebel plot to burn down the city on that day. There is indeed such a plot--named Lucifer--spawned in Kentucky by the Southern Confederacy and headed by Lieutenant Colonel Robert Martin. He and his seven co-conspirators have arrived in New York and settled in a house on Cay Street--only to find the local papers trumpeting their secret plan and treating it as a contemptuous political ploy by the Democrats to defeat Lincoln's bid for reelection. Martin, his paymaster John Price, his New York contact Eugene Longmire, and the others decide to go through with their plan anyway, but not until after the election. The fateful day is November 25. By then paymaster Price is dead; Longmire has absconded with much of Lucifer's expense money; others have died, their throats slit and matchsticks lodged in their teeth; romances have flourished--with a local whore and an aspiring actress--all of it to end with a whimper, not a bang, and with the spy inside the group finally revealed. The role of reporter Peter Tonneman, of the New York Evening Post, is sidelined in this sprawling, meticulously researched but overpopulated and unfocused saga, leaving only the vibrantly alive depiction of 1864 New York to compensate the history-minded reader. -- Copyright ©1997, Kirkus Associates, LP. The best in historical mystery
By A Customer
In 1864 New York City is divided over the Civil War. However, none of the residents are split over a rumor that a militia of Kentuckians are poised to burn down the city in an act of terrorism. Almost no one believes it since the residents mostly support the democratic party and think Lincoln and his cohorts are the source of the rumors.
Not even thirty, Peter Tonneman is already a weary journalist on the New York Evening Post, whose assignment is the nation. Peter learns that the rumor has a lot of substance as Morgan's Raiders have been seen in the vicinity. Now all he has to do is prove it before he loses his life.
The sixth book in the Meyers' "Tonneman family" saga is a brilliant novel that brings to life the various prejudices that shaped the Civil War. Peter like his ancestors of the past two centuries, is a wonderful lead character and the historical factoids add a taste of authenticity to a well written, exciting historical novel. Anyone who enjoys historical fiction will want to read the entire six books that breathlessly describes two hundred years of New York City (starting when it was New Amsterdam), turning this into one of the best series in the genre.

Not the best in the series
By A Customer
Although the desciptions and details of this Civil War mystery were very interesting and obviously well-researched, the plot was not as tight as previous Tonneman books. While character development was fair, not great, the very short chapters seemed to jump from place to place in the city - a little helter skelter. Overall I would recommend this book, but again, the earlier ones are better.

Review
Michael Stevens has found the right vein, circulating raw material of the mind of visionary genius in post modern literature and art. His exhaustive compendia and matrix is like the fractal's pattern bringing similarities that could reveal whole equation. He has provided the reader with the sources of allusion, influences, critiques, and the spirit of scatological obsessions of the late William S. Burroughs, the well-read innovator, inventor, and investigator in literature, art, culture and cosmology. Ezra Pound once advised readers who thought the Cantos too obscure, to just think of them as people throughout history sitting around talking. This book allows me the conversations with Uncle Bill that I unfortunately neglected in his presence. --Charles Plymell

To scan Michael Stevens' bibliography is to dream of entering into William Burroughs' head from a new angle -- not from his writings but from his readings. You can't live Burroughs' life but you can read the books he read. You can infect yourself with the same word virus he picked up in writers ranging from Abrahamson (Crime and the Human Mind) to Yeats ( 'cast a cold eye on life, a cold eye on death...' ) Will these get you any closer to the mutations Burroughs performed on the word virus? Doubtless you'll understand the man and his work better. And perhaps, with the help of the creative reading Burroughs espoused, Road to Interzone will even put you in position to subject the same viral sources to a few new mutations of your own. --RealityStudio.org

'A fascinating and richly helpful piece of literary archeology, tracing as broadly as possible the sources William Burroughs had available to him as he wrote. Both the title and the method echo the classic Road to Xanadu, John Livingston Lowes excavation of Coleridge s reading: Coleridge, like Burroughs, being more than a little interested in drugs. It is a work for which all Burroughs students should be grateful.' --Larry McMurtry

The Madness of King Burroughs
By Salvador Glenwood
Mr. Stevens has revealed his genius, or insanity by documenting a comprehensive library of books owned, read, reviewed, or quoted by Beat Godfather William S. Burroughs. On a personal note, if I need a book to read, something discharged from main stream booksellers, I pick up this mad intoxicant, flip through the pages and discover a wealth of diverse literature on subjects I never imagined I'd even look into. The discipline involved, along with tireless research has made this a must own for anyone interested in books, burroughs, or writing. If you hate all three, well then I can't help you.

Invaluable Resource for the Burroughs Scholar
By WaxNostalgic
As more and more books about William Burroughs are being released, the need for a reference like this is readily apparent. Expect to see "The Road To Interzone" cited as a standard source in such books from now on. A detailed map of the rich intellectual history that informed Burroughs' own thought and work (or, at least, kept him entertained), "Road To Interzone" is more than a simple catalog of the Burroughs library. Stevens provides plenty of context on how and where a good number of these books (may) have surfaced in Burroughs' own work, as well biographical information (like his relationships with the authors). There is even a bibliography of the books Burroughs wrote blurbs for. An invaluable resource.

A terrific Burroughs resource...
By T. Veitch
Burroughs is like a lake with no bottom. Put on your scuba gear and dive into his psyche...if you dare. Scarey at first to swim in a mind so unfettered...then, once you realize he is a humorist with a cosmic perspective, you follow his dark illuminations into the depth of a uniquely American mysticism that encompasses both heaven and hell. Nothing like him existed before, except in the dreams that Melville, Jack London, and William James didn't dare put on paper. I suspect Mark Twain would have been a Burroughs aficionado had he lived another fifty years...and they are sharing dry jests even as we speak, on the undersea bridge to infinity.

I was fortunate to receive a copy of this book when it was passing hand-to-hand in manuscript form. It's a unique resource for Burroughs scholars. Two centuries from now it will still be in print. A bow to Michael Stevens for his determination and dedication.
