Ian Rothmann is Professor of Industrial Psychology and Director of the Optentia Research Focus Area at the North-West University, Potchefstroom, South Africa. Cary L. Cooper is Distinguished Professor of Organizational Psychology and Health at Lancaster University Management School, UK. He is the author and editor of more than 125 books and is one of Britain's most quoted business experts. He was awarded the CBE by the Queen in 2001 for his contributions to organizational health and safety; and in 2014 he was awarded a Knighthood for his contribution to the social sciences.

This is no fluffy business fable!

Fantastic book by my friend Howard Mann! This isn't some fluffy business fable as one might judge by its slim storybook size and hardcover. The business insights contained within were heard-earned by the author himself via his own experiences in running a successful (but stressful) freight and logistics company.

The content is broken into core components that benefit everyone from the seasoned CEO to the first-time entrepreneur. The book is beautifully designed and packs a visual punch for the reader; from the chapter headings to the "two-minute drill" summaries, all the way down to the representation of "football-as-brick" icon.

The 12 lessons (my favorites are: Reconnect with Your Purpose, Lose Your Nemesis, Singles and Doubles, Relationships Not Sales, Accelerate Through The Finish Line, and Escape Desk Gravity) are succinct and to the point -- the author knows you don't have time to waste, you have a business to run!

Part of the legend of Benjamin Franklin is that he spent quite a bit of time improving himself. He selected 13 virtues (Temperance, Silence, Order, Resolution, Frugality, Industry, Sincerity, Justice, Moderation, Cleanliness, Tranquility, Chastity and Humility) and set about improving himself in those areas. But he didn't try to do it all at once. He took one virtue at a time and specifically focused on trying to improve himself in that area for one week. I recommend that you do the same with this book. Choose one lesson and focus your attention on in improving (even just a little bit) in that single area for one week. Pick another area for the following week. And another. And another. And another. And another. And then go back and do it all over again.

It's time to go back to the brickyard, baby!

60-minutes of business radness

I read this entire book on a short one-hour flight; I was blown away. So much value in so few pages. Almost a contradiction in terms when it comes to business books. I'd say any manager would enjoy it, but I'd have to say that most value will be had by people that have owned businesses for 5 or so years.

An INTERNATIONAL EDITION!!!!

Hi there.

I ordered this book because it was cheaper than some other options. However, the cover does not look the same as the one pictured in the ad. This is false advertising. Nonetheless, the content so far seems the same. I just won't be able to sell it back to the bookstore I normally resell my books to because they do not take international editions.
Guess I should have gotten the clue from the company's name: InternationalBooks, but I still believe that they should have put the true pic of what the book looks like which is a lot different. Other places that sell international books do. That is why I did not buy the book from them, because the international version is not what I wanted. Let's be honest, the picture is typically what amazon buyers look at anyways when they purchase items...not the fine print!

I would never purchase this for leisure; required textbook. Overall, easy to navigate and the index is awesome in helping direct you! If you use this book for a class, USE THE ONLINE COMPANION!!! It helped a TON!!

I'm annoyed that Nursing has to invent its own "jargon" to ...

This was a required text for a course I'm taking. The concepts/terms described in this text are often so vague and generalized that they seem almost interchangeable. There are not enough practical examples to illustrate (often abstract) terms and concepts. Moreover, I'm annoyed that Nursing has to invent its own "jargon" to describe concepts in "nursing research" that are No different from concepts in any academic or biomedical research field. I would only recommend you buy this book if it is required reading.

Women in Mycenaean Greece is the first book-length study of women in the Linear B tablets from Mycenaean Greece and the only to collect and compile all the references to women in the documents of the two best attested sites of Late Bronze Age Greece - Pylos on the Greek mainland and Knossos on the island of Crete. The book offers a systematic analysis of women’s tasks, holdings, and social and economic status in the Linear B tablets dating from the 14th and 13th centuries BCE, identifying how Mycenaean women functioned in the economic institutions where they were best attested - production, property control, land tenure, and cult. Analysing all references to women in the Mycenaean documents, the book focuses on the ways in which the economic institutions of these Bronze Age palace states were gendered and effectively extends the framework for the study of women in Greek antiquity back more than 400 years.

Throughout, the book seeks to establish whether gender practices were uniform in the Mycenaean states or differed from site to site and to gauge the relationship of the roles and status of Mycenaean women to their Archaic and Classical counterparts to test if the often-proposed theories of a more egalitarian Bronze Age accurately reflect the textual evidence. The Linear B tablets offer a unique, if under-utilized, point of entry into women’s history in ancient Greece, documenting nearly 2000 women performing over fifty task assignments. From their decipherment in 1952 one major gap in the scholarly record remained: a full accounting of the women who inhabited the palace states and their tasks, ranks, and economic contributions. Women in Mycenaean Greece fills that gap recovering how class, rank, and other social markers created status hierarchies among women, how women as a group functioned relative to men, and where different localities conformed or diverged in their gender practices.

Although rich in technical detail, its topic and argument will doubtless appeal to a broad audience of Aegean prehistorians and ancient historians. The project is an important one, and Olsen does an good job pulling together all of the textual evidence, demonstrating how differently Pylian and Knossian women appear in the Linear B tablets, and relating these differences to social practices. We need more studies like these: studies that use the rich Mycenaean textual evidence to contribute to broader debates in Greek history and prehistory."

Breaks new ground on women's role in ancient world

Extraordinary because this very difficult & detailed unraveling of Linear B tablets' listings of women's economic activities in Ancient Greece pushed back our knowledge of it by 400 years, and begins to answer many questions about the role of women in antiquity -- e.g. was it different in Classical Greece than this far earlier Minoan/Mycenaean period? If so, how? "Progress" or lapse in women's freedom to engage in agriculture, commerce, local trade? The first chapter clearly lays out the author's goals and questions, the sources on which she depends, the likely importance of this study for others in the future. Much is quite technical, and the type fonts for the Mycenaean texts alone explain the books high costs. I can't profess to understand all of it, but the questions are social and cultural, the evidence highly abstruse and technical epigraphy and archaeology.
