True Analog Bliss

I found this book to be incredibly interesting. So interesting, in fact, that it made me wish I had been involved with the analog synthesizer scene during the era which this book details. Hearing the stories and personal accounts of individual contributions to the development, marketing, and subsequent musical evolution caused by the early analog synthesizers, made me lust for yesteryear.

After reading several compliants regarding the sociological study-aspect of this work, it must be stated that the sociological impact analysis is a vital component of the historical content contained within. In fact, if the sociological discussion was ommitted, the work would suffer, as I feel the Moog's and early synthesizer's impact on society is a fascinating subject. During the time period which this book dissects, individuals were, for the first time, hearing totally unique and original sounds. Unfortunately, humanity has since become jaded to the excrutiating beauty of subtractive analog synthesis. The statement which described the sound of two analog oscillators beating against each other on the morn of (I believe--challenging my memory here) the second day of Woodstock, reflecting it was the first time many had heard that exact sound, made me yearn to be there.

Ultimately, if you are interested in an account of historical fact, coupled with social impact commentary as it pertains to these now ancient analog synthesizers, and associated early sequencers, read this book. However, if you have no desire to learn of yesteryear and absorb depictions of the early evolution of music technology, which has led to the crap that is virtual analog, don't waste your time.

Not just a biography on the Moog Synthesizer, but early synths

An enjoyable read. I've been a Moog enthusiast for many years. Recently I've seen the Video Biography on Robert Moog as well and these complement each other. The enjoyable thing about the book is that is delivers good information on early synth development and there appears to be a division as to how musicians wanted to use these synths. Robert Moog worked closely with musicians who wanted a keyboard trigger and this became a worldwide format, but there was an independent group who wanted a different means of triggering and not so set on a chromatic keyboard format. There is also a very detailed chapter on Wendy (Walter) Carlos. Those that were upset at her absense in the Moog Video Documentary can gain a bit more insight here. This triggered more interest for myself in her recordings.

Overall a very good history book on early synth development and good account of early Moog modular synth Development as well as an extensive chapter on the Minimoog as well. ARP and Buchla also included.

A Must for Any Electronic Music Fan!!!

Frank Trocco's book "Analog Days" chronicles the full history of an invention that would change music as we know it today. That invention of course is the synthesizer created by Dr. Robert Moog. This book is loaded with historical information dealing with how the instruments were manufactured as well as details about the artists who were among the Moog synthesizer's first prominent users. Moog pioneers such as Walter/Wendy Carlos, Keith Emerson, Beaver and Krause, Margouleff and Cecil, Mother Mallard and countless others are mentioned in this book. This is definitely THE book to own if you're doing research on the history of electronic music or synthesizers. There is so much information, there's bound to be something new each time you read it. Not only is it a perfect research tool, it's just a plain great book to read. The person writing this review doesn't like to read very much so, for me, this is saying quite a lot.
"Analog Days" is a book that does not disappoint and it will be one that you'll want to read over and over again.

About the Author
Abigail Padgett grew up in Vincennes, IN, and holds degrees from Indiana University, the University of Missouri and Washington University, St. Louis. She has taught high school English and college courses in Sociology and Creative Writing in San Diego and Boston, directed an ACLU chapter in Houston and worked as an advocate for the mentally ill, plus enduring some truly weird temp jobs. Abbie is the author of nine highly acclaimed mystery novels that have been translated into five languages, one novel among which, CHILD OF SILENCE, was made into a movie in France. (Which must have been challenging, since the novel's action takes place in the California desert and features Native American Paiute people.) A Vampire Novel for Grownups

I’ve long been a fan of Abigail Padgett’s writing, so I was delighted a while back when she came out with a couple of new books, a stand-alone mystery, “Bone Blind,” and a wonderfully quirky contemporary fantasy called “The Paper Doll Museum,” both of which I loved. Her newest book, “An Unremembered Grave,” is also in the fantasy genre, a deliciously moody vampire novel set against the backdrop of Angola Prison.

The Louisiana location is as much a character in the book as the three individuals, a historian, a prison inmate, and a vampire, whose stories intersect in “An Unremembered Grave.” You can feel the heat, the humidity, and the oppressive weight of history in this isolated corner of the deep South, where a former sugar plantation is now a maximum security prison for six thousand men.

Staying in nearby St. Francisville, where she is doing research, historian Danni Telfer finds herself drawn to two very different men, Antoine Dupre, who is serving a life sentence in Angola for a murder he didn’t commit, and Stephane Grimaud, a vampire, who has just awakened from a hundred-and-fifty-year sleep to a world he doesn’t recognize. Danni has always known she was different, but she doesn’t understand what that difference means until the Vampire Grimaud recognizes her as an Adept, and awakens her awareness. He needs her help, but so does Antoine, a decent man who will die in prison unless he can enlist the aid of someone on the outside to prove his innocence.

This is such an enjoyable book on so many levels. It posits a unique and poetic idea about what vampires are and why they exist—why, in fact, humanity needs them. The writing is gorgeous, conjuring the decayed beauty of the landscape with its oppressive heat, swamps, and Spanish moss. The scenes inside the prison are rendered with an attention to detail that is utterly convincing, and rather different from the stereotypical stuff one usually sees about prisons.

Best of all are the characters. Grimaud, the vampire, born in the time of Charlemagne, is courteous and cultured, frighteningly intelligent, but also oddly childlike, and, when need be, a ferocious predator. Antoine is a good man caught in a nightmare and struggling to retain his humanity. Danni, born with a special gift that she is just beginning to understand, is courageous and complex as she knowingly walks into the most dangerous situation of her life.

The only problem with this book is that it ends! I’m not complaining. It’s a good, satisfying ending, but I’m just not ready to part company with these characters. I’ve got my fingers crossed for a sequel.

A real vampire story

An Unremembered Grave weaves the stories of three, richly textured characters in scenes so real, you’ll feel you’re part of the story rather than reading a book. You’ll greedily drink in the backstory of Danni Telfer. She wants to forget an embarrassing affair in her recent past. She knows she is different, and she is just waking up to her aptitude as an Adept.

You’ll forget to breathe when Stéphane Grimaud, a real vampire (not the sparkly kind!), arrives on the scene. Buried for 150 years in the dirt of a plantation called Angola, he wakes up weak and ignorant of, but amazed by, all the trappings of present-day life in Louisiana. It’s hard not to fall for this gorgeous, seductive, sensitive, intelligent being with a penchant for colored silk waistcoats.

I'm in love with Grimaud, and I'm not nuts about vampires. . .

Grimaud, the vampire who arises from an unremembered grave in Padgett’s new book, breaks vampire stereotypes – he’s a fully realized character who turns all other vampires pale and two-dimensional. I loved Bram Stoker’s Dracula when I was maybe twelve and then outgrew it, and modern-day wimpy love-object vampires do not appeal to me at all. But, oh, Grimaud! Yes! Padgett’s descriptions of his urbane and complicated personality, his returns from near-death (the reconstitution of his body, the pinkening of his newborn skin), his love of blood for the history that lives in it, his adaptation to modern life after sleeping (?) in a grave for a century and a half are absolute, believable poetry. Grimaud alone is reason to read this book, but add to him Danni Telfer, a historian who is an adept without knowing it and Antoine DuPre, an innocent man incarcerated in a Louisiana prison, and you have a reading experience you’ll never forget. Padgett is a well-known mystery writer, and in this book (as in all her others) she has concocted a mystery that keeps the characters in motion, changes their lives, and keeps the reader riveted. I can’t wait for the sequel.

Should be required reading - in my humble opinion

First of all, I'm not a reader, but I was compelled to purchase and read this book after "The God Squad" appeared on Imus in the Morning on WFAN/MSNBC. I'm glad I purchased the book and here's why: This book breaks the major religeons down to fundamental basics that the layperson can understand. After reading this book, I'm surprised there isn't more religeous strife going on in the world due to the sheer differences in beliefs and theological structures.
I've always been fascinated by religeon, especially since I am of the scientific/realist wing. I am, however, glad I spent the hours I did digesting this material. For the few bucks it costs - not a bad bargain.
I know other reviews are much more eloquent than this, but I wanted to toss my two cents in and give this book a "thumbs up"!

I thoroughly enjoyed reading A Practical Guide to Race Car Data Analysis by Bob Knox. The author does a great job breaking down data, such as, determining car health, diagnosing handling issues (whether set up issues or driver induced), and driver characteristics. Real examples with color and annotated figures are provided throughout the book. A reasonable number of clearly explained math formulas are also included. In fact, the author provides these math channels in the formats native to a number of data systems (AIM, MoTec, Pi, and STACK). If you don't own one of these data systems, that's ok as the formulas are clearly written so they can be written in applicable formats for other data systems.

Two particular strengths of this book are the discussions on damper potentiometers and some recommended templates for interpreting data. The topic of damper potentiometers isn't covered in many of the books I have found. The author spends an entire chapter (around 25-30 pages) on interpreting damper data: displacement plots (are the dampers hitting their bumpstops), velocity histograms, ride frequency, roll/pitch, determining downforce, and test methods to generate aero maps. The only other book that I have found which covers this material in any significant detail is the book by Jorge Segers. Jorge's books is quite mathematical and likely has a different target audience.

Bob Knox's book also includes some standardized templates for interpreting data. He suggests how to organize x-y plots, time/distance graphs, etc into logical groups. For instance, an example of a pressure report shows how a page could be organized to show x-y plots of lateral acceleration vs. oil pressure, longitudinal acceleration vs. oil pressure, lateral acceleration vs. fuel pressure, track maps, as well as min/max/average tables on a single page so trends can be quickly determined yet have details immediately available. In addition, a detailed data analysis outline is provided which will give the reader a list of things to look for whenever a new set of data is acquired.

There are around half a dozen books currently available on race car data acquisition. I have read nearly all of them and the three in particular that I and would recommend are:

1) This book, which is a great introductory to medium level book on the topic.
2) Competition Car Data Logging Manual by Graham Templeman: Another introductory to medium level book with lots of great examples and color plots. Dampers aren't really covered.
3) Analysis Techniques for Racecar Data Acquisition by Jorge Segers: Another great book with LOTS of details and formulas targeted more towards engineers. Great details, including formula derivations, are provided.

I have yet to read Making Sense of Squiggly Lines by Christopher Brown. That is next on my reading list.

Excellent intro to data analysis!

This book was recommended to me by Roger Caddell from AiM when I took one of his training classes and I gotta say I wasn't disappointed.

As the title of book indicates, this book is about cars and not motorcycles. As a motorcycle club racer this unfortunately the state of things as there are no books on doing motorcycle data analysis. That said, most of the data here translates over, but there are exceptions of course. Bikes and cars experience under/oversteer very differently for example. I'd still recommend this book for motorcycle data analysis, but be sure to also read Andrew Trevitt's website "DataMC" as a supplement.

The book covers AiM, MoTeC, Pi and Stack and probably has over a hundred different math channel formulas you can can use for your analysis. That said, I'd classify this as an intro to intermediate book because it covers a bunch of different areas of data analysis, but doesn't go really deep into any of them. Some topics like suspension analysis are probably a book all to themselves, so that's not too surprising. But it does go deep enough into every topic so you can start asking intelligent questions, extract some useful and ACTIONABLE information to go faster. Reading this book should give you a solid foundation for more advanced books/topics.

Bob's writing style is clear and to the point. The layout of the book makes it easy to read and the color photos are awesome. I do wish the margins were bigger so that it was easier to write my own notes down though.

Overall, I'd recommend this book over "Making Sense of Squiggly Lines" even though this book is twice the cost. It covers more topics (like suspension analysis) and more importantly provides a lot more math channels that you can add to your own data to learn more about what you and the vehicle are doing out on the track.

Great book for anybody interested in data analysis.

I purchased this book on recommendation of a very successful and experienced race engineer. It is geared toward the beginner to somewhat experienced data analysis technician, but there is enough quality information to be useful to even experienced and professional data engineers. The book is well-illustrated and gives many clear, concise examples to improve understanding of concepts.

About the Author

Alex Alvarez, PhD, is a Professor in the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice at Northern Arizona University. From 2001 until 2003 he was the founding Director of the Martin-Springer Institute for Teaching the Holocaust, Tolerance, and Humanitarian Values. His first book, Governments, Citizens, and Genocide, was published by Indiana University Press in 2001. His other books include Murder American Style (2002), Genocidal Crimes (2009), and Native America and the Question of Genocide (2014). He has also served as an editor for the journal Violence and Victims, was a founding co-editor of the journal Genocide Studies and Prevention, was a co-editor of the H-Genocide List Serve. He has been invited to speak and present his research in various countries such as Austria, Bosnia, Canada, England, Germany, Lithuania, the Netherlands, and Sweden.

Ronet Bachman, PhD, is a professor in the Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice at the University of Delaware. She is coauthor of Statistical Methods for Crime and Criminal Justice (3rd ed.) and coeditor of Explaining Crime and Criminology: Essays in Contemporary Criminal Theory. In addition, she is author of Death and Violence on the Reservation and coauthor of Stress, Culture, and Aggression in the United States; and Violence: The Enduring Problem as well as numerous articles and papers that examine the epidemiology and etiology of violence, with a particular emphasis on women, the elderly, and minority populations. Her most recent federally funded research was a mixed-methods study that investigated the long-term trajectories of offending behavior using official data of a prison cohort released in the early 1990s and then interviewed in 2009.
