Thorough, realistic, helpful guide to getting started in the equity markets

The author of this book is an acquaintance of mine; accordingly, I felt compelled to see what it was all about. As an active participant in the financial markets I was expecting Jonbull's Stock Guide to be another "status quo" beginning investment book, but I was wrong. The text is interesting, honest, and doesn't promise unrealistic outcomes from stock trading. The author uses personal experiences to keep readers engaged and to give them the ability both understand the concepts and potentially apply them to their investment plan. I particularly liked the section in which J.P. Obienugh discusses the difference between saving and investing, and being an investor vs. being a speculator. He gave readers parameters to identify behaviors of each to ensure they are honest with themselves and the actions they are taking in the markets. This is important because too many speculators falsely believe they are investing, when in reality they might as well be placing wagers at a craps table in Las Vegas. I give this book two thumbs up!

There are many books out there on how to do this or that and some are just. This book this stock guide was clear enough for my son to understand and I allowed him to pick a few stocks that I would of not. He is schooling me right now. 13 years old and I had to buy him is own copy. The point is just a job will not help you to become anything but a floor mat and this book will help you to when the time comes for that great company to kick you out. You will now have investments on standby that can keep you going until your are hired and released again. This is the only book that you will need for understanding the stock market.

The book was a great read, and the author is a nice person. Overall I'm pleased by the way he presented the information, and tried not to overwhelm his readers. A must read for those who want to understand the stock market.

I put myself through college doing constrution work- since then I have worn out 3 copies of this book just looking through it and imagining how I would build different things. It has saved us money as well, because I have used it to show different remodeling contractors how I expect certain things to be done. Each new edition has had great additions made to them to keep up with new technologies such as solar.

Finally a useful construction book

I am very impressed with this book. The name "The Visual Handbook of Building And Remodeling" pretty much says it all. This book, which is approximately 1 inch thick and printed on high-quality paper, is beautifully illustrated with hundreds of full-color, isometric, and cross-sectional views of just about anything to do with the construction of a building. There are page after page of design guidelines including dimensions of just about any room in a home. Diagrams and dimensions of walks, ramps, level changes, kitchens and seating are clearly illustrated including the recommended dimensions. Brick sizes, brick veneer construction and various brick building tables are included. The cross-sections of every construction detail are clearly drawn with each part distinctly labeled. Table after table of easily understood joists and rafter dimensions, allowable spans, truss construction of various types with tables and again clearly illustrated. There are chapters on roofing, with asphalt,cedar and other shingles and flashings. Plumbing fittings are illustrated along with water wells and pumps, PVC pipe, sizing drain pipe, roughing in and dimensions. "Meet the Code", including a partial list of the requirements from the 2006 international residential code are included for many of the trades. There is also excellent coverage of electrical wiring for residential buildings including conduit, switches, lights, tables and cross-sections of each of these. I have only touched on the surface of what's available in this book. If you're planning to build a home from the ground up or just planning to do a little remodeling in a few rooms, you will find this book well worth the investment. Even a building contractor would find some useful advice and perhaps a few new ideas contained in this excellent book.

I don't often write reviews, but, I had to with this book. I am a very visual learner and I have to "see" things for them to fully make sense. Reading code text is extremely boring; so this book is amazing because it puts a lot of the code into pictures. I may end up purchasing a backup copy just in case. The ideas are clearly presented, there are no "brand bias" with things, it's very much a "Here's what you need to do" book.

Disorganized, repetitive

Required to purchase this book for OT school. I typically enjoy reading, especially when it's relevant to my profession. HOWEVER, this book is EXTREMELY disorganized and repetitive. You will be reading about one thing in one section, only for it to be repeated in another. It's not like it EXPANDS on the topic, it just repeats itself. Also, when discussing about chronological order of certain things, it'll go from youngest to oldest (children's age) for expected behaviors then switch it up in another chapter and go from oldest to youngest (children's age). Extremely confusing---not a book I will be keeping.

Although this text book is a great resource, it is FULL of grammatical and spelling errors and is extremely repetitive. I am very confused as to how the 6th edition of this book could have so many simple errors in it-it needs to be proofread!

Decent if you must have a care plan book, needs more details

This book is fairly easy to use. I like the layout, but it is not as great when it comes to going over nursing interventions. It is extremely choppy and short. Before I purchased this book I looked high and low for a differnt care plan book more like the one I had purchased for nursing 101 class by Meg Gulanick and Judith Meyers, but alas! They have not published one! I finally settled on this Nursing Care plan book. This has helped me develop my own care plans for patients, but as I stated it is not as detailed as one would have hoped (when it came to rationales for each action or intervention and descriptions for the why you could choose this nanda diagnosis, and even separating out the types of interventions which mu NU 101 care plan book did). I do wish it were available for kindle, lugging yet another large book to clinicals was not pleasant. If you are looking for a care plan book for your OB class, this one is decent, but I am sure there are better more detailed care plans available online just by using google.

The First and Greatest English Detective Novel?

As many reviewers have noted, T.S. Eliot called `The Moonstone' "the first and greatest English detective novel." Is the novel worthy of such praise? We shall see...
The story begins with a brief prologue describing how the famous yellow diamond was captured during a military campaign in India by a British officer in 1799. The action moves quickly to 1848 England, where, according to the British officer's will, the diamond has been given to one of the soldier's young relatives, Rachel Verinder. Yet only hours after the diamond arrives at the Verinder estate, it disappears. Was it stolen by a relative? A servant? And who are these three Indian men who keep hanging around the estate?
`The Moonstone' is told from the point of view of several characters. The first portion of the tale is told by Gabriel Betteredge, house steward of the Verinder estate, who has been working for the family practically his entire life. Although over 200 pages, Betteredge's account holds the reader's interest as he introduces the main players and the crime itself. The next account, by distant Verinder relative Miss Clack, is humorous and somewhat important, but far too long (nearly 100 pages) for its relevance to the story. But after Miss Clack's account, things really take off at breakneck speed.
Readers who latch onto the T.S. Eliot quote expecting a modern detective tale will be sorely disappointed. You aren't going to see anything resembling Jeffrey Deaver, James Patterson, Sue Grafton, or even Mary Higgins Clark. You also won't see Mickey Spillane, Dashiel Hammett, or Raymond Chandler. Nor will you see Agatha Christie, Dorothy Sayers, or Martha Grimes. You won't even see Arthur Conan Doyle. But you WILL see the novel that influenced them all.
You'll also see something else. Something that modern mystery/detective writers have for the most part lost. Characters. Oh sure, modern writers have characters, but for the most part, the reader only learns enough about the character to forward the plot. In our time, plot is King. When `The Moonstone' was published (1868), one of the novel's attractions was its characters. Collins has painted each of these characters so well that the reader feels that they know not only how they look, but their mannerisms, their movements, how they think, and their view of the world they live in. That type of character development is seriously lacking today, not from all writers, but from far too many.
Of course, the down side is that Colllins also took over 500 pages to develop those characters. Is the book too long? For most modern readers, the answer is yes. I believe it all has to do with your expectation. Put modern mystery/detective stories out of your head. Then read `The Moonstone' as you would any other novel. Get lost in the atmosphere and the characters. Immerse yourself. Most of all, enjoy. Reading `The Moonstone' is like eating at a fine restaurant after months of fast food. When it's over, you just want to sit back in your favorite chair and say, "It's nice to know that the finer things are still available." Yes they are. Treat yourself to this gourmet book.

An immersive, unforgettable mystery classic

THE MOONSTONE was the first mystery story, and it in many ways remains one of the most remarkable. Working in the shadow of the Gothic and Romantic literary traditions, Wilkie Collins managed to create something new and unique. Instead of the endless evocation of atmosphere and focusing on sinister villains, Collins focuses instead on a simple mystery and its solution: who stole the diamond known as the Moonstone, and where did it go? But any reader of the novel knows that the mystery is secondary to the exposition and the marvelous parade of characters. It isn't the getting to the resolution of the mystery that is the main thing, but the process of getting there.
One of the great attractions of the novel is the extraordinary style of the writing. Although the first English mystery story, it had not yet devolved into a genre, and Collins was not aware that a mystery story could not also be great literature. As a result, he imbued his characters with enormous charm and give them each a vivid manner in expressing themselves. The multiple narratives by this remarkable characters was a strategy to deal with the problem of authorial point of view. On the one hand, Collins wanted to avoid the omniscient narrator who would know the truth both about each character and about the myster of the fate of the diamond. Collins therefore cast the novel in the form of a succession of narratives by the various participants in the novel. He thereby limits the knowledge of each narrator, but he also is able thereby to provide considerable variation in the style of each narrative. The two most remarkable segments are those by Gabriel Betteridge, House-Steward in the service of Lady Verinder and her cousin Miss Clack, a prim and fervid evangelical Christian whose missionary zeal and prudish moralizing provide many of the funniest moments of the novel. The style of these two could not be more distinct, both from the rest of the narratives and from each other. Miss Clack has constantly to fight a tendency to sermonize. She is apt to turn out passages such as: "A thundering knock at the street door startled us all. I looked through the window, and saw the World the Flesh, and the Devil waiting before the house--as typified in a carriage and horses, a powdered footman, and three of the most audaciously dressed women I ever beheld in my life." Betteridge, on the other hand, is solid, practical, a tad parochial, but ferociously loyal to his employer. For him the good life consists of a good pipe and a copy of ROBINSON CRUSOE at hand. If one laughs a bit at Miss Clack, the reader comes to thoroughly like Betteredge. Between the two of them, their narrative occupy more than half the novel. The others are also quite enjoyable, but not to the degree that these two are.
THE MOONSTONE is a page turner, which is to say that it is a delight to read. One wants to read quickly both because each page is such a joy and because one wants to discover what happens next. The characters are mainly enjoyable, but like so many authors his eccentric characters are far more memorable and enjoyable than his central characters. Betteredge, Miss Clack, and Sgt. Cuff far outstrip the "hero" of the book, who while a good citizen, is from a literary point of view a tad boring.
I can agree with those readers who consider THE WOMAN IN WHITE a better book, but this is another of those comparisons that are odious. The book is so enjoyable, fun, and memorable that I can't imagine any reader lamenting during the course of its pages that they weren't reading the other book instead.

Must read if you like detective novels

I have become a recent convert to Victorian literature. Educated as an electrical engineer, I did not appreciate literature until I reached my 70's. This book is to the modern detective novel as Maxwell's equations are to the wireless engineer of today. All the modern detective novels follow the basics exhibited in Moonstone, but usually fall far short because they leave out one or more of the "equations". A thoroughly gripping and inventive novel by a master.

Through analyses of constructions of Traveller origins, local government records, the provincial press, and debates of the Irish parliament, a history of local and national anti-Traveller discourse and practice in the independent Irish state is revealed and linked to the legitimation and reproduction of other social inequalities, including those of class, gender, and generation. Helleiner's research, conducted in the course of long-term residence in a Traveller camp, supports her historical analysis with an examination of how travelling, work, gender, and childhood become sites for the production and reproduction of contemporary Traveller collective identity and culture even as they are shaped by oppressive forces of racism. These phenomena are located within political struggles at local, national, and European levels.

Interesting book ...

The recent TLC series and a trip to Ireland prompted my interest in Irish Travelers. The book is interesting, although the writing style is at times a little awkward. It is well researched and thought provoking.

Daniel Reis

Daniel Reis has worked in the IT industry for over 15 years, most of it for a multinational consultancy firm, implementing business applications for a variety of sectors, including telco, banking, and industry. He has been working with Odoo (formerly OpenERP) since 2010, is an active contributor to the Odoo Community Association projects, and has been a regular speaker at the OpenDays annual conference. He currently works at Securitas, a global security services company, where he introduced Python and Odoo into the applications portfolio.

Excellent content, worthless index

The content is an excellent introduction to Odoo 8 that covers many basic and intermediate topics for which answers can not easily be found elsewhere, so five stars for the content. However, the index is worthless, first because it is incomplete, and second because it is inaccurate, so zero stars for the index. Many of the terms I wished to look up in the index were not present, and the terms that were present in the index consistently referred to the wrong sections of the book. In order to find particular terms, I had to scan the table of contents, guess which section would be the most likely to contain the desired information, and then re-read that section. If the index was accurate and reasonably complete, this would be a five star review.

However, after several weeks, I find myself referring more often to the book than to Google, and believe the high quality of the content warrants revising my initial review from three to four stars, despite the index.

I would buy it again, but directly from the publisher and bundled with a searchable PDF for a few dollars more.

On an additional note, the front matter states that the eBook is available at a discount to purchasers of the physical book, but as of this review, multiple attempts to contact the publisher (Pakt Publishing) were not successful. If the eBook was available at a reasonable price point (and not another $23.99 for a searchable PDF) this would be a five star review.

Best Intro to Odoo Development to Date

I find it hard to believe that no one has reviewed this book yet.

This is by far the BEST book for new Odoo developers that exists to date, and I've bought every one that has come out so far. If you are already an experienced Python developer, this cuts through all the cruft and gets right to the point. The money that I spent on this book (I happened to get it right from PackIt Publishing for the PDF version) was worth more than everything I spent on all the other books... and yes, even $ paid subscription tutorial videos by other people.

It starts off with you writing a simple module, like most books, but addresses EVERY important area for writing a complete module, then goes into depth for each major area of what makes up your custom module and all the available and important options for using models, fields, views, domains, logic, security, etc... And it targets the latest Odoo Version 8.

There are some symantec errors, but very few, and it addresses an English speaking audience extremely well.

In the seemingly fresh frenzy to come out with material to sell (whether it be books or videos) for what is becoming the most popular open source ERP system in the world... for all other authors, publishers and editors out there writing and/or producing Odoo development material, don't bother if you cannot match or exceed the quality of content of this book. In my opinion, this book is now the measure to which all other material needs to be compared.

Excellent Book. Highly Recommended!!!

Daniel Reis really wrote a terrific book. This is one of the best books I've ever read about an application development environment completely new for me (as Odoo was some days ago). This book represented the guide I was looking for to learn about application development with Odoo.

- The book conveys new key concepts in clear and direct way to be easily and quickly catched and applied even for completely new Odoo developers.

- I was more than glad when realized that the book does not stop at just an introductory level of development in Odoo environment, but that it takes the reader to a higher level, boarding themes like for example application extension by using concepts like inheritance and other more elaborated topics, exposing them in very clear way too.

This book follows Packt books great tradition of teaching by reading-doing-explaining-"and seing inmediate results" as part of the reader’s learning process.

I got the book after its launching and I assure that the book’s worth its price.
