The Most Important Book to Read in 2015....

I love this book! It is an easy read, has a nice flow and is very down to earth. It has awesome valuable concepts and daily reminders and answers the question many may have, How do we apply the" Force" aka Law of Attraction responsibly. The Force is neutral, it is up to us to choose focus our energy in a positive way which may mean unlearning some bad habits, and becoming more vigilant in what we place our attention on. It would do anyone well to read this book and not just once. One can use this book as a meditation tool to focus your mind and emotions on only those things you desire to have in your life. You can read one page or chapter to glean from it the simple truths that need to be put into action daily. Thanks so much Joshua!

So when he is old enough to understand I will take parts of this book to have him a positive outlook on life. Anthropologists have long known that different cultures give expression to their symbol systems through external mediums such as food and clothing, but they have not recognized as readily that cultures also mold emotional life to fit particular patterns of meaning. This prejudice against the role of behaviors in shaping the emotional and cognitive life is especially strong in the study of religion. Gary Anderson's study reveals that, in the Israelite culture (and later, the Jewish culture), mourning and joy as emotional experiences have visible behavioral components for both the individual and the community at large. The best evidence of this can be found in rabbinical texts that prescribe behaviors appropriate to joy and determine when this ritual state supersedes that of mourning. For example, on religious feast days, mourning is forbidden and joy is prescribed. Mourning cannot resume until after the festival. The terms "mourning" and "joy" so employed do not refer to simple emotional states, but rather constitute a discrete set of ritual behaviors. In fact, the types of discrete behaviors that constitute joy (eating, drinking, festal song, anointing with oil, festive attire, sexual relations) all have exact anti-types in the ritual of mourning (fasting, dirges, putting ashes on the head, rending one's garments or putting on sackcloth, sexual continence). Anderson shows that it is not only the rabbinical texts that use the terms "mourning" and "joy" in this way; rabbinic tradition is simply heir to a much older tradition, as witnessed in biblical and other ancient Near Eastern narratives such as the Gilgamesh Epic.

Journalist Conley examines the implications of brand-centric marketing in an incisive investigation that illustrates how defenseless consumers are against advertising—on any given day, they are assaulted by 3,000 to 5,000 ads and branding stratagems that subtly dictate every aspect of their lives. Harnessing scientific innovations, branding has become increasing insidious—whether it is the Xbox audio logo or Southwest Airlines' incorporation of the fasten seatbelt sound in their marketing campaign—consumers are being conditioned to think in brands. Beyond ad creep and product placement in entertainment programming, viral and word of mouth (WOM) marketing now make even personal recommendations suspect. According to Conley, 1% of American children and 7% of mothers are compensated for participating in WOM marketing. Even social policy is being corrupted—the author asserts that public branding initiatives such as post-Katrina New Orleans' allocation of public funds toward refurbishing its Mardi Gras City image rather than addressing its safety issues shifts resources away from problem-solving in favor of perception. Conley's perspective on branding's encroachment into social areas is as alarming as it is stimulating. (June)

Lucas Conley, who began his career at The Atlantic Monthly, is a contributing writer for Fast Company. His work has appeared in The Boston Globe and ESPN: The Magazine, among other publications. Obsessive Branding Disorder is his first book. He lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

More fluff than substance

The book was well written and somewhat entertaining. It was interesting for the first couple chapters, then went downhill quick. The biggest drawback was that the substance of the book feel off after the first couple chapters. After that, it was a lot of rehashing the same stuff. Not a bad book, just not a great one.

Conley's little book on the use and abuse of branding to sell products and services.

This was a great book. It was short (only 200 pages), but the type was small and the margins were reasonable. It's an investigative piece. The author is not a marketing expert or a writer trying to promote a marketing firm or whatever. This is a simple book that explores the status of marketing today. It questions whether the US culture has become obsessed with brands rather than quality products and new improved products.

The author says at some point that he was thoroughly amused by the extreme examples of branding he saw. And he believes the world is cheapened when EVERYONE sees it with a marketer's eye. I agree. But this book is good because it points out that branding is used AND ABUSED as a tool to sell goods and services today. A lot more use and a lot less abuse would be good!

This book informs us that successful marketers today create loyal customers who are lazy minded and don't think much before they buy. They just stick to the brand that they have learned to trust and believe in. Once a company creates a successful brand, then they milk it for all it's worth.

This book has an introduction and 9 chapters. Examine the Search Inside material provided by Amazon to see the chapter titles. I thought the book was written well and well outlined. 5 stars!

Al Bahr Towers are the most distinctive and innovative new landmark in the Middle East. Built for the Abu Dhabi Investment Council, the two 25-storey towers provide Abu Dhabi with a unique gateway to the city. Though built out of glass and steel, they represent a complete departure from other contemporary high-rise buildings. Modern and pioneering in their use of the most up-to-date technologies, they have been conceived to be entirely rooted in the local culture and environment. The towers are designed using geometric principles derived from traditional Islamic architecture. Their distinguishing feature is a contemporary interpretation of the traditional mashrabiya, a wooden lattice screen that is commonly used by vernacular Islamic architecture to provide shade and privacy. With over 2000 components, the towers’ monumental mashrabiya have been specially developed by the architects Aedas not only for their cultural associations but also their sustainable benefits. They create a unique dynamic shading system that opens and closes during the course of each day in response to the movement of the sun, substantially reducing solar gain.

About the Author

Peter Oborn is former Deputy Chairman of Aedas Architects Ltd, part of the Aedas Group, which is ranked as one of the world’s largest international architectural practices. Peter has considerable experience of working internationally, particularly in the Gulf, and has completed projects in Oman, Qatar and the UAE. He was responsible for inception of the practice’s Research & Development group, based in London, which has developed specialisms in sustainability, advanced modelling and computational design. Underpinning the work of the group is a commitment to an increasingly rigorous and thoughtful design process, combining empirical analysis with creativity. Peter is a national member of the RIBA Council and was elected the RIBA's Vice President for International Relations in October 2011.

very good on the basics

Don't let the previous review dissuade from this book. This is a fine, albeit simple, approach to electronics. The author has a good writing style giving lots of qualitative descriptions of the basics.

Having said that, it is lacking a bit in the comprehensiveness department.

The chapter on Transducers is solid and the op-amp chapter is very good, too. Best thing about the book are the end of chapter review exercises and problems. New material is often introduced here and you have to have a good understanding of the chapter material to answer them. It's not just plug-n-chug from given equations to get an answer.

The author is also to be commended for showing how the material relates to actual circuits that scientists could use. Most electronics books seem to leave out this critical motivational material.

Try Looking Somewhere Else First

This was the book that my instructor selected for our electronics class. "Your book is going to only cost $20 for this course, and it's really good" he told us.

Well, he didn't lie about the price, but I found this book to be terrible for entry level students. As a physicist who is really strong in math and electronics, I found this book incredibly confusing. I struggled with the homework questions and had to go look up other references because the book would ask a legitimate electronics question, yet so poorly cover the material that seemed like the question came out of left field.

Let me give you a perfect example. The book tells you how resistors are color coded, but then doesn't specifically tell you how to read a resistance with color coding. To a person already familiar with the topic, it wouldn't matter if you didn't know how to read resistance via color coding, the book's vague description should remind you how it's done, but if you weren't already familiar with how resistor color coding works, you would have a very difficult time understanding what the book said.

By the end of the class, I was so frustrated with the book that when I happend to finally find a straightforward explanation to an electronic device, I tore the pages out, and threw the rest of the worthless book away.

A friend introduced me to his 200 level circuits book which was $100, and I ordered a copy on the spot. It was so much more clear than this book.

You get what you pay for with this book. Buyer beware.
