Most all music, some missing!

This music highlights the old version of Kiss Me Kate before the Broadway revival! It is great for auditions for soprano voices. There are one or two songs for the alto voice. Very clear in marking who is the singer. I found this book to be full of great songs at a reasonably good value. The book is written in fairly large print so they are easy to read when singing.

The Hippocratic Oath, like Handel's Messiah, is heard once a year. At medical school graduation ceremonies around the nation, 20,000 voices intone modernized, bowdlerized versions of the ancient pledge. For the rest of the year, it goes silent, except for an occasional invocation of one or another of its phrases to make a point about a contentious issue, such as assisted suicide or abortion. Many contemporary medical ethicists dismiss it as antiquated and irrelevant or condemn it as an insidious endorsement of medical paternalism. Steven Miles wishes to pluck the oath out of its ritualistic niche, refurbish its meaning, and show its relevance for modern medical ethics. Miles is neither a classical scholar nor a historian of medicine. He is a practicing internist, a leader in the field of medical ethics, and a voice in health policy. (He also ran a creditable primary campaign for a Senate seat.) He has immersed himself in the literature about the origins and exegesis of the oath and works through its phrases with admirable skill. Although a proper historian might criticize an occasional interpretation of the author's, Miles's reading of the oath is illuminating. He attempts to place this mysterious document, written 2400 years ago by unknown hands, in the cultural context of Greek medicine and morality. However, his chief concern is to reveal the oath's relevance for the practice of medicine and for health policy in the modern world. Using the familiar format of grand rounds, he posits a clinical case or health policy issue for each phrase of the oath and asks the Hippocratic physician to comment. This literary device works well enough, although one might wish for more cogent cases in several instances (as happens, of course, in actual grand rounds). Miles examines the oft-cited phrases about "use of deadly drugs" and "abortifacients," demonstrating that they are unlikely maxims against euthanasia and abortion but offering plausible explanations of the terms' original meaning and relevance to modern medical ethics. He finds, as few commentators have, a dimension of social justice in the oath by distinguishing between the public and private activities of the Greek physician, both of which were governed by concepts of beneficence and justice. He concludes with a pertinent insight: noting that the oath, unlike modern codes and principles, was composed to be proclaimed in the first person, he writes that "its authors spoke explicitly of the necessity for each physician to reveal his professional moral commitments. The first-person voice may be part of the energy behind the Oath's endurance." Finally, teachers of medical ethics may appreciate Miles's outline of a course designed around the phrases of the oath. better than the author thinks

there's a sad statement near the beginning of this book - the author begs readers who are disaffected by the book to return for a refund RATHER THAN LEAVE A REVIEW ON AMAZON - he's forgetting the spirit of reviews - which is to help the potential buyer

when i came to the webpage to leave a review - i found 14 five-star reviews and none of lower rating - plus 10 of them were received within the dates Sep 17 to Sep 19 2015 - and now 2 of the 5-star reviews have disappeared - it's all very suspicious - i think that many potential buyers who saw ONLY FIVE-STAR reviews (even from "verified purchasers" - the author can purchase copies and gift them to someone else) would be suspicious

too bad - cuz the book is rather good - altho it's not great - i would have given it 4 stars - but that plea to suppress bad reviews deserves a deduction

i'm NOT a beginner to programming - so i can't testify from the perspective of a beginner - but i suspect an absolute beginner would have problems - someone approaching jQuery in general SHOULD know HTML and CSS - cuz jQuery is working directly with them - if you have that background - this book will give you a taste of jQuery - and several simple and useful tricks that can be employed immediately

there are youtube videos that would provide similar lessons - but they're not as good for me since i just tend to sit back and watch - this book MADE me get on the computer and follow the instructions - it was fun - frustrating - and effective

i didn't go thru the book in 8 hours - and i would recommend against that - you might go thru the book quickly in a day - and then go back again - this time embellishing on the tasks in order to get more depth - that second step is what i did - and because i frequently changed the webpage that was being worked on - i would have problems - and i would learn from the many mistakes i made - that's my learning style - making mistakes - then getting out of them

while i might qibble over minor things in the book - i'm sure most readers will glide over them - i've quibbled over every tutorial i've used - and yet i learned from them

despite the author's lack of self-confidence - this book does its job - the reader will have learned the basics - and his appetite whetted for a more in-depth study - Yao should feel secure in that accomplishment

Authentic and simple

if you love traditional Singaporean hawker food and you want to make it for yourself, this is a great recipe book. I appreciate the simple explanation in this recipe book. Alot of great traditional hawker food listed here. I've already tried a number of recipes on this and I can't say enough about the food. My family loves the recipes. One thing to share is that the recipes tend to be on the generous portion side so cut down as necessary. Also, be careful about the laksa recipe as it calls for too much chilies. I can eat hot but this one is really spicy.

A novel approach to career decision-making

I greatly enjoyed The Strategic Career. I've historically approached my career with a sense of inertia, but doing the exercises around personal value propositions really helped me focus on both 1) what it is that I enjoy, and 2) what it is that I'm good at. I think this would be a useful exercise for anyone--whether currently comfortable with their place in the job market or not. With Barnett's experience at McKinsey and as a professor, he does a great job at communicating his points clearly, concisely, and effectively.

What this book is not: a wishy-washy, feel-good approach to "pursuing your dreams." Barnett's method is tested and rigorous. His cases are relatable and well-chosen. His writing is interesting and easy to follow.

I would recommend this to any friends or colleagues looking to make a change, or even just to better understand themselves.

Unique Approach to Finding the Right Career for You!

Barnett's strategic approach to seeking out and ultimately landing a personally satisfying career is unlike any other book or article that I've read on the topic. The application of business strategy (something I'm familiar with as an MBA) to planning a successful career is both intuitive and novel. I especially enjoyed going through exercises to create my Personal Value Proposition and to plan (and prepare) for different outcomes of my recent job search (similar to scenario planning at work). Without Barnett's guidance, I doubt I would have developed the personal insight and the best tools to successfully execute my career search.

Chock full of case studies demonstrating application of the frameworks and real situations where tradeoffs among aspirations, criteria and choices are brought to life. Very, very helpful book.
