Visions of Infinity: The Great Mathematical Problems, by Ian Stewart

It is one of the wonders of mathematics that, for every problem mathematicians solve, another awaits to perplex and galvanize them. Some of these problems are new, while others have puzzled and bewitched thinkers across the ages. Such challenges offer a tantalizing glimpse of the field’s unlimited potential, and keep mathematicians looking toward the horizons of intellectual possibility.

In Visions of Infinity, celebrated mathematician Ian Stewart provides a fascinating overview of the most formidable problems mathematicians have vanquished, and those that vex them still. He explains why these problems exist, what drives mathematicians to solve them, and why their efforts matter in the context of science as a whole. The three-century effort to prove Fermat’s last theorem—first posited in 1630, and finally solved by Andrew Wiles in 1995—led to the creation of algebraic number theory and complex analysis. The PoincarĂ© conjecture, which was cracked in 2002 by the eccentric genius Grigori Perelman, has become fundamental to mathematicians’ understanding of three-dimensional shapes. But while mathematicians have made enormous advances in recent years, some problems continue to baffle us. Indeed, the Riemann hypothesis, which Stewart refers to as the “Holy Grail of pure mathematics,” and the P/NP problem, which straddles mathematics and computer science, could easily remain unproved for another hundred years.

An approachable and illuminating history of mathematics as told through fourteen of its greatest problems, Visions of Infinity reveals how mathematicians the world over are rising to the challenges set by their predecessors—and how the enigmas of the past inevitably surrender to the powerful techniques of the present.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Few of us share Stewart’s mathematical skills. But we relish the intellectual stimulation of joining him in exploring mathematical problems that have pushed even genius to the limit. We thrill, for instance, to the ingenuity of a great Chinese mathematician coming tantalizingly close to proving the centuries-old Goldbach Conjecture. And we feel the human meaning of mathematical achievement when a triumphant British analyst weeps before television cameras after finally proving a seventeenth-century algebraic theorem. We feel that meaning again when a brilliant Russian mathematician retreats into reclusive isolation, distressed because of initial skepticism toward his groundbreaking work on a nineteenth-century riddle. But high-level mathematics stirs deep emotions largely because it taps into the mind’s deepest impulses. Stewart repeatedly shows how a trivial mathematical curiosity can open up vital new conceptual insights. Readers learn, for example, that the apparently inconsequential four-color problem has led investigators deep into theoretical physics and has compelled fundamental rethinking of what constitutes a mathematical proof in a computerized age. Proofs incorporating computer-generated calculations may strike old-school mathematicians as unsatisfying, but Stewart assures readers that mathematics still depends on human investigators and that such investigators will not soon run out of daunting mathematical problems. A bracing mental workout for amateur mathematicians. --Bryce Christensen

very interesting topics, but not explained very well
By Humble
I am well trained in math. I love math and tried reading two of Mr. Stewart's books: In Pursuit of the Unknown: 17 Equations That Changed the World; and Visions of Infinity. I expected the books to be amazingly interesting but was disappointed and frustrated when reading them. Mr. Stewart jumps over key steps, which are difficult to grasp and reaches for the end result!

I think less than 10% of the people with advanced degrees in the sciences could follow his explanations in any chapter and actually feel they understood the topic.

I am surprised that the book's cover jacket has endorsements from newspapers saying the book is easy and fun. My humble advice to prospective readers: borrow the book from a library and make your own judgement and then write your own review on Amazon.

Fun, Entertaining and Enlightening, GREAT READ!
By Let's Compare Options Preptorial
I've pre-read the soon to be released "golden ticket" book --ala Willy Wonka's candy bars-- The Golden Ticket: P, NP, and the Search for the Impossible-- which explores P-NP, and along with Ian's Infinity book here, these are really the only two UP TO DATE books on the millenium and other "tough" problems in math and computing, both solved and awaiting new approaches. Although P-NP is technically a computational complexity problem, knowing which problems can and can't be solved in polynomial vs. exponential time is widely believed to hold the key to "all" the other problems in computing AND math! An astonishing prospect.

Infinity is a GREAT, fun read, with just enough math to please, but not intimidate an advanced high school level reader. It is not just another of the numerous "here are the heroes --heroines-- of math" books that dwell on older, solved problems. The history and problems given lead us into both unsolved CURRENT problems, and the birth of many of the newer --over 450 at present writing-- subspecialties of analysis, math, tricky current theorems, etc. As usual, Stewart doesn't "talk down" to his readers, and you get a real "brain workout" feeling after reading this wonderful survey of the "top 14" toughest solved and unsolved, and their real-life ramifications as solved and when solved.

One of the really amazing side shows in this exciting field is the nature of humans vs. computers that is quietly raging in math. P-NP --although mostly thought to be unequal--, for example, even peeks into quantum observer and quantum computing issues about how "great" even average human brains might potentially be. It pulls back a curtain in which a variety of "modern" brute force, algorithmic, sieve and spectral methods and other algorithmic approaches to problems are finding unexpected barriers.

This is non trivial, because a modern operating system like Windows with hundreds of thousands of lines of code is "controlled" by tiny algorithms of two or three lines, as are million line fly by wire jets. Our planet is rapidly becoming algorithm driven, to the extent that most new math methods and problems are described in algorithmic terms. But P-NP is only a little slice of this wonderful book, which covers a vast number of newer and less known stumbling blocks within the top 14, including the better known millenial problems. In Systems Engineering, we know that infinite and tiny problems are much easier than the "middle" complexity problems.

Just as dynamic systems can "settle down" into chaos/fractals, strange attractors or an oscillation, the book, after taking us on a fascinating journey through the known and unknown, gives us a great, up to date feel for which problems are in which category of difficulty and likely vs. unlikely to be solved in our times. The "toughest" problems are the stuff of cryptanalysis and are "good" from the standpoint of providing security, but Ian also shows the many possible openings at the back of the tent in addition to the door, by suggesting possible "close enough" solutions and directions that are worth pursuing.

Great survey, with just enough depth in each area to tease the reader into looking further. Because of Ian's usual "analogy" explanations and diagrams, very tough problems are explained intuitively, but the actual math is sneakily grad level. You WILL hunger for more if any of these tantalizing puzzles hit home. If you're a P-NP enthusiast, you should know that Ian doesn't think it is solvable in anyone reading this books lifetimes! But don't get discouraged, he could be wrong, but does make a strong and thoughtful case.

In the golden ticket book above, Fortnow also says P/NP won't be solved in --possibly-- thousands of years, due to the kind of "proving a negative" of "showing" that EVERY potential algorithm HAS to fail. The cool thing mentioned by both Ian and Fortnow is that these REALLY tough problems tend to bring vast areas of science together that were silos in the past. If you look up Systems Science on Wiki, you'll get an idea of the missing link in a lot of these discussions. The unstated speculation is whether the human brain "perceives" higher dimensions than algorithms can reach in some fashion, and P/NP has areas as strange as the quantum observer for the possibly unexpectedly great potential of humans, as yet unknown.

Library Picks always buys the books we review, and has nothing to do with Amazon, the authors or publishers, and our comments are solely for the benefit of Amazon shoppers.

Good and well readable overview of Millennium & other math problems
By Martijn13Maart1970
As stated in the item info, " In Visions of Infinity, celebrated mathematician Ian Stewart provides a fascinating overview of the most formidable problems mathematicians have vanquished, and those that vex them still. He explains why these problems exist, what drives mathematicians to solve them, and why their efforts matter in the context of science as a whole."
After reading this book I have to say this is indeed what the book delivers, as much as I can at least imagine to be possible. So this makes for a very interesting read, also for the layman. However, some problems are so abstract, they defy a simple analogue for daily use. That is why some reviewers have commented that the book was not always clear to readers who, like me, are not having e.g. a PhD in maths. they are partially right, since there can not be a book that lists all these problems that is easily read as well. There has to be a compromise, and some feel that is why this book, as so many others, is hybrid and awkward. That is ironic, since the author tried (too?) hard to give it a try to explain all of the theorems that the current math community considers important. That does indeed lead sometimes to passages I had to skip, and I have a MSc degree in Aeronautical engineering!
The alternative would have been to omit the too abstract ones for readability, but then the title of the book would not have lived up to the promise and should have been changed in 'Visions of Infinity For Dummies'. Or, even worse, what if the author would have left out all math details and turned it into a sort of popularized Da Vinci code?
You cannot eat the cake and have it (or is it the other way around?): if you pick up a book about math, you will have to do some math reading! Unfortunately, many of the most important problems in math are not only difficult to solve (hence the million dollar prize) but, unlike for instance Fermat's Last Theorem, many problems are also difficult to state, even for people who are no layman. Math is simply so big, that many specialists do not have the faintest idea what others are doing, let alone the layman reader. Having said that, it is clear why it is difficult to write a book like this, trying also to explain the importance of these math problems to the layman. The author tries the most he can and does an excellent job in making the compromise between completeness and readability. Many fascinating subjects appear and I just suggest you skip the parts you cannot follow, since there is plenty of other interesting stuff left! For instance, the P/NP problem is explained very well, and I also liked the author's comment on Perelman's reclusive behaviour during and after his Millennium Prize.
The only thing that would have helped would have been a conclusion in the end of every subject, so it would have still been possible to grasp the main ideas without reading all the formulas in those chapters that were too difficult for some of us, but then again, maybe some math defies simple explanation with metaphors in daily life. Still, give it a try and you will be in for a good read.
Also recommended are for instance these titles

The Elements of Scrum, by Chris Sims, Hillary Louise Johnson

The Elements of Scrum has gained an international following and a reputation for being perhaps the only book on software development that reads like a page-turner. Written by Chris Sims, a top scrum trainer and pioneer of experiential learning, and Hillary Louise Johnson, a novelist and business journalist, it demonstrates the principles, practices and pitfalls of the scrum framework through lively storytelling and vividly told example.

The Elements of Scrum opens with a blow-by-blow description of a week in the life of a scrum team, then briefly details the history and origins of scrum, comparing it to traditional methodologies and providing context for how scrum applies to the cultural history of the software industry. Next, the principles and practices set forth in the Agile Manifesto are broken down and illustrated with real-world examples, putting the reader inside the heads of the founders of scrum and agile for a thorough grounding in theory.

The meat of the book explains every aspect of the scrum process, including team composition, scheduling and work flow management, in crisp, clear, example-laden prose designed to provide insight to novices and experienced practitioners alike.

The book concludes with a section on supporting technical practices like Test Driven Development and Pair Programming, to help the reader apply scrum at the practical level.

The Elements of Scrum is taught at colleges and universities across the country, including UCLA, George Mason University, Arizona State, SUNY Potsdam, Wofford College, and Becker College. It has been translated into Mandarin, and is soon to appear in other international editions.

Easy to read, long on information
By Joel
EoS is a great mix of approachable writing, great anecdotes and simple pictures, both the ones drawn into the book and the pictures the words easily formed in my head. The nearly 200 pages flew by quickly while giving me some excellent new perspectives on the use of Scrum. For readability I found it outstanding.

Elements is not a complete "how to" book of Scrum, that's not the goal of the book. It's laid out a lot like a training cours, and will give any reader a strong foundation in the basics of Scrum. Even though I've taken scrum master certification and have been an active agilest for some time now, I still came away from this book with a deeper knowledge of Scrum's core fundamentals. That says a lot for a $30 book, that it can still teach you some new ideas after taking a two day training class.

The final positive point I can give it is where it will live, now that I've read it. EoS will find a place on my ready reference shelf in my office cube. When I need to check something on Scrum, it's only an arms length away and finding information in it is google easy.

Surprisingly good
By Tom L. Pittman
This is the second book I've "borrowed" from the Amazon Kindle loaning library, and it will be the second book I'll be buying -- just as soon as I can figure out if I want it in paper or digital format.

PROS:

o The book wisely starts off by telling a week in the life of a scrum team. I say wisely, because anyone with any software development experience at all will immediately get a clear, "bird's eye view" of the overall scrum framework from this opening story, and that perspective will make the reading of the rest of the book go quickly.

o Next the book reviews the traditional "Waterfall" development cycle which is another smart move. Not only does reading about the methodology I learned in college help establish the authors' credibility for me, they explain waterfall with a sense of fairness -- so you don't walk away feeling like you are about to read the one-sided propaganda of some agile fan-boys.

o As the book unfolds, you get the sense that the authors definitely have a ton of real world experience, and that you are getting something much more useful than scrum theory.

o The book is logically organized, making learning scrum a breeze.

o The authors didn't seem to be worried about page count, but instead taught scrum efficiently and effectively without extra words, war stories or fluff.

o The authors allow some personality to flow on to the pages, making the book a fun read.

CONS:

o I wish the authors would have done a bit more to define scrum-specific terminology at the beginning of the book, or at least provided a glossary at the back of the book so we could look up the terms as we come upon them -- particularly if we are coming upon them again and again.

o Not all the formatting looks right on the kindle. None of it is bad, just off at times.

o The pictures are so tiny on the kindle, that some are borderline unusable.

Now that I've written this review, I think I'll buy this in kindle format so that the highlighting I did as I read the book (yes, I knew it was a "borrowed" book, but I just couldn't resist) will transfer to my purchased copy.

I can see me wanting to refer back to this book again and again, and it will just be handy to have access to the book and my markings from my Android phone, iPad, Kindle Fire -- whichever gadget happens to be handy when I need to look something up.

An Excellent Look at the Inner Workings of Scrum
By Dave Moran
If you want to understand the essentials of Agile development and Scrum, The Elements of Scrum by Chris Sims and Hillary Louise Johnson is a must read. The book itself doesn't talk about Agile development in pure theoretical terms, it provides insight on how Scrum teams function by using examples and clear explanations.

The Elements of Scrum walks you through a Scrum team's inner workings, including planning and executing a sprint, daily scrum (stand-up) meetings, sprint reviews, and the retrospective. The book provides in-depth coverage of key Scrum artifacts such as the product and sprint backlogs, information radiators like the sprint and release charts, the task board, the definition of done, user stories and acceptance criteria. Chris and Hillary even cover a topic you don't read much about: terminating a sprint.

The Elements of Scrum really shines as it walks you through the ins and outs of estimating and planning. I particularly enjoyed the example of "Agile Islands," as it provides an excellent basis for understanding Scrum's use of relative sizing versus time estimates. Chris and Hillary explain why relative sizing works, pointing out that, "While we are bad at absolute sizing, we are good at relative sizing."

They follow up to explain how relative sizing is applied:

"The trick is to use a two-step process. First, assign relative sizes to all of the work items. The size indicates how much work there is to do. Second, do a couple of work items and measure how long they actually take. Armed with this measured amount, the relative sizes assigned to all of the other items can now be used to provide the desired predictability of schedule."

And if you've ever wondered why Agile development uses sizing numbers in the Fibonacci sequence, The Elements of Scrum explains this as well: "...the Fibonacci sequence, when used to represent `sizes,' increase at about the same rate at which humans are able to easily perceive differences. Just as anyone can tell a one-story house from a two-story house at a glance, anyone can tell 21 story building from a 34 story building."

Since the book relies on examples of actual experiences to illustrate how Scrum works in practice, it naturally gives an inside look at The Team Estimation Game and using techniques such as planning poker. The book closes discussing a variety of supporting practices, such as release planning, the use of personas, story mapping, refactoring, pair programming and test-driven development.

If you are looking for a book that provides an "inside look" at how Scrum teams plan and operate, I highly recommend The Elements of Scrum .

Comic strips and comic books were among the most popular and influential forms of mass media in 20thcentury America. This fascinating book focuses on fifteen pioneering cartoonists—ranging from Winsor McCay to Chris Ware—who brought this genre to the highest level of artistic expression and who had the greatest impact on the development of the form.

Organized chronologically, Masters of American Comics explores the rise of newspaper comic strips and comic books and considers their artistic development throughout the century. Presenting a wide selection of original drawings as well as progressive proofs, vintage printed Sunday pages, and comic books themselves, the authors also look at how the art of comics was transformed by artistic innovation as well as by changes in popular taste, economics, and printing conventions.

First appearing in newspaper Sunday supplements, the comic strip became immediately successful and created the largest audience of any medium of its time. The comic book first began as a way to print existing newspaper comics, then subsequently established the mass popularity of superheroes in the 1940s and 1950s before it matured as a vehicle for independent personal expression in the underground comic books and graphic novels of the 1960s.

Included in the book are insightful and entertaining essays on individual artists written by major figures in the fields of comics, narrative illustration, literature, popular culture, and art history. Masters of American Comics convincingly positions the genre of comics into the history of art and is destined to become a classic text for years to come.

The Day the Crayons Quit, by Drew Daywalt

The #1 New York Times bestselling phenomenon!

Poor Duncan just wants to color. But when he opens his box of crayons, he finds only letters, all saying the same thing: His crayons have had enough! They quit! Beige Crayon is tired of playing second fiddle to Brown Crayon. Black wants to be used for more than just outlining. Blue needs a break from coloring all those bodies of water. And Orange and Yellow are no longer speaking—each believes he is the true color of the sun.

What can Duncan possibly do to appease all of the crayons and get them back to doing what they do best?

Kids will be imagining their own humorous conversations with crayons and coloring a blue streak after sharing laughs with Drew Daywalt and New York Times bestseller Oliver Jeffers. This story is perfect as a back-to-school gift, for all budding artists, for fans of humorous books such as Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus by Mo Willems and The True Story of the Three Little Pigs by Jon Sciezka and Lane Smith, and for fans of Oliver Jeffers' Stuck, The Incredible Book Eating Boy, Lost and Found, and This Moose Belongs to Me.

Fantastic Read for Kids!
By Alice M. Adler
I read this book to my 5-year-old daughter and when we got to the end she asked me to read it again. When I got to the end of the second reading she announced she had an idea about drawing "live crayons like in the book" and embarked on a project of drawing different color crayons with colored wardrobes to match and made a "dress the crayons" game out of it. She loves to have books read to her, but this is one of the only times my short-attention-span kid has asked for the same book twice in a row and the first time a book as inspired such a burst of creativity.

This book would be great for all sorts of ages: from very little kids who will like the idea of the talking crayons and the cute illustrations, to much older kids who will find the crayon's witty banter and creative complaints extremely funny.

This is going to be my new gift for everything from baby showers to birthdays to Christmas! Don't hesitate to order this one, your kids will want to hear it over and over.

Fantastic book for all ages!
By Jennifer Doetsch
I am not ashamed to admit it, I'm 41 yrs old and just purchased this book...for myself! I work at a library and when this book came in every person who read/looked at this book said they were going to purchase this book for either a child, or children in the family, or for themselves! I can't say enough good things about this book, do yourself a favor buy it! You'll smile and laugh and love it each time you read it!

"HILARIOUS, FUN-FILLED, AND ENTERTAINING!"
By Author/Reviewer Geri Ahearn
Award-winning writer/director of film and TV Drew Daywalt, and New York Times bestseller Oliver Jeffers, deliver an entertaining children's story that is playful, and packed with fun. This delightful story will have children laughing, reading, and sharing their own thoughts, while giving crayons a whole new meaning. The colorful, stunning illustrations come to life as each colorful crayon gives their complaint, while protesting about their color. Orange and Yellow are not speaking to each other for their own reasons, Beige doesn't want to compete with Brown,Blue is tired of coloring lots of water, and it seems that only Green has no complaints. What complaint does Black have, and will Orange and Yellow learn to compromise? A colorful solution must be met as all the complaints pile up, so that the crayons never think about calling it quits again. Poor Duncan just wants to color, and he wants his crayons to be happy. Does Duncan solve all the crayon problems, and get an A+ for coloring? There are several Dear Duncan letters to solve as children giggle their way to the end. Fascinating, inviting, and entertaining throughout. Highly recommended for teachers, parents, and child-care providers!

Science abounds with problems where the data are noisy and the answer is not a straight line. Semiparametric regression analysis helps make sense of such data in application areas that include engineering, finance, medicine and public health. The book is geared towards researchers and professionals with little background in regression as well as statistically oriented scientists (biostatisticians, econometricians, quantitative social scientists, and epidemiologists) with knowledge of regression and the desire to begin using more flexible semiparametric models. It provides a very readable access to modern semiparametric regression, demonstrates its potential in various applications, and is an inspiring source for new ideas. I enjoyed reading this book."
Biometrics

"... contains clear presentations of new developments in the field and also the state of the art in classical methods... I found it an easily readable book; its coverage of material was extensive and well explained and well illustrated ... I found the material useful and I recommend it strongly to anyone who is interested in modern nonparametric methods, whether they are expert or not ... here are 500-odd pages of good teaching material, nicely done, culminating in the arc-sine law and the Black-Scholes formula: anyone teaching probability would be glad to have it to hand."
Journal of the Royal Statistical Society

"This book provides an extensive overview of techniques for semiparametric regression ... I think it may be very useful for a more practically oriented audience."
Kwantitatieve Methoden

"This book is a very nice book for data analysis and indicates how to flexibly develop and analyze complex models using penalized spline functions. The examples are nontrivial and very useful."
Mathematical Reviews

"Although appealing to statistically-oriented scientists, this book also should not fail to attract the attention of experts in the field, because it provides a fresh perspective on smoothing and addresses ongoing computational and theoretical issues. The text is quite comprehensive, and the chapters are carefully organized for a coherent development of the subject...this is a book that I would strongly recommend to practitioners who want to learn nonparametric regression techniques and apply them to their own problems without being burdened by advanced mathematical concepts such as a reproducing kernel Hilbert space."

another great text by the team if Ruppert and Carroll
By Michael R. Chernick
David Ruppert and Ray Carroll have been a research team for over 25 years. They have published many articles and books on regression analysis. These articles are always very clearly written and are great at showing the big picture and not just the nitty gritty details of the theorems that they prove. Two of my favorite books that they published are "Transformations and Weighting in Regression" published by Chapman & Hall in 1988 and "Measurement Error in Nonlinear Models " with Stefanski in 1995 and also published by Chapman & Hall.

This book is no exception. It is lucid in expostion and paints a general picture summarizing the area of nonparametric regression models and incorporating them with parametric regression both linear and nonlinear.

Their work has also been motivated by the desire to extend the theory of regression models to practical problems where the standard theory with assumptions such as linearity, normality, and homogeneity of variance don't hold.

In the first chapter, they motivate their methods through a number of examples in the areas of health science and environmental pollution problems. Chapter two goes through the standard linear regression models and the diagnostic checks for those models. They also cover other practical issues including model selection, use of transformations and extensions to nonlinear models. The special case of polynomial regression (a particular example of linear regression) is presented in detail.

Chapter 3 on scatterplot smoothing introduces many of the key ideas to their approach to semiparametric regression. Their approach in its most general form is based on mixed models which are introduced in chapter 4. Chapter 5 deals with automated methods for implementing the scatterplot smoothing techniques. The remaining chapters cover for example, simple semiparametric models, additive models, semiparametric mixed models, and generalized parametric models which include the very useful generalized linear models that they have extended to cover mixed effects.

The generalized additive models of Tibshirani and Hastie are covered in chapter 11, Other important issues including variance function estimation, accounting for measurement error, Bayesian approaches and more are covered in the latter chapters (12-17), Finally in chapter 18 seven examples are introduced to illustrate applications of the various methods. An epilogue, chapter 19, was written to motivate further research.

Many of these chapter are the subjects of whole monographs including some that Ruppert and Carroll have co-authored. In the preface they say that the book is intended for three potential audiences. The first audience is the students and scientists with interest in applying the techniques or learning about them but possess at most a moderate background in regression. The second audience (the group I would put myself in)are the biostatisticians ,econometricians and scientists in other disciplines who have a good working knowledge of regression and want to add the flexibility of semiparametric methods to their arsenal of techniques. The third group is the researchers in nonparametric regression who may not yet know about some of the new advances of Carroll, Ruppert and Wand that are included in this text.

I find in general that their books are masterpieces. As a statistician who has done both applied and theoretical work, I know what it takes to write books that summarize a body of theory or connect the theory and applications, or incorporate new results. These authors do both of these things in this book. They have the rare talent to find a way to unify and simplify existing theory and that is another great feature you will find in this book.

I haven't been able to do that and only a few others that I know can. One example that comes to my mind is the book on extremes by Leadbetter, Lindgren and Rootzen. At the time if of publication in 1978, they provided a unified theory for extremes combining the theory for independent and dependent cases. They also provide some examples in the bppk. But even that landmark book is heavily theoretical. Ruppert, Carroll and Wand emphasize applications and provide a number of examples throughout.

Environmental Economics: An Introduction (The Mcgraw-Hill), by Barry Field, Martha k Field

Environmental Economics is an introduction to the basic principles of environmental economics as they have been developed in the past and as they continue to evolve. The examples discussed in this textbook represent only a sample of the full range of issues that actually exists. For this reason, the Sixth Edition sticks to the basic ideas and ways that environmental economists have found to make the basic concepts and models more specific and relevant to concrete environmental issues. The basic structure and sequence of chapters are unchanged but contain new and updated material that reflects the new research efforts by environmental economists over the last few years.

Highly recommended
By C. C.
This book is very well written and covers key notions of environmental economics. One thing I particular like about this book is its lucidity. It reads just like a good novel.

As the title suggests, this is an introductory book. Don't expect to see deep theories or math in this books.

Good job on teaching the concepts but not enough math
By H. Arshad
Good job on teaching the concepts but not enough math. It effectively complements a course if the professor will actually explain how to do the math.
